"Star?" I heard her voice from the doorway, surprised and a little startled. She stood there in leggings and a loose sweater, her hair tied up like she had not expected anyone at all.
"Were you expecting someone else, Lena?" I said as I let myself inside. I walked past her and sat on the couch without waiting for an invitation.
"No," she said, her brows knitting together. "But you've been acting like a different person recently. Are you okay?"
"Please, Lena, spare me the fake pleasantries and care." I gestured vaguely toward the empty apartment. "There's no one here. You don't have to pretend. It's not like if I tell people who you really are they'll believe me."
She laughed, a high-pitched, sharp sound that echoed down the hallway. "Looks like you finally caught on, Star. That no one will listen to you. That no one will love you. That no one will choose you."
My fingers curled into the fabric of my dress. "What did I ever do to you, Lena? Why do you hate me so much?"
