wonder when I'll have a Pokémon that can contend with that legendary, one-of-a-kind, ancient Dragonite. Such a powerful Pokémon that even this cheat-like system can't detect its moves or strength. If I could capture it, wouldn't I be unstoppable?"
While daydreaming, Alex Carter arrived in Vermilion City, home to the Electric-type Gym. The city buzzed with vitality and energy.
Shops sold Electric-type Pokémon dolls, Pikachu tail brooches, Electrike helmets, and other Electric-themed items. The dazzling array tempted everyone.
"Grumble grumble~" Alex rubbed his growling stomach. "Even a great Villain needs to eat; no one is exempt. The people rely on food as their heaven. I'll head to the Pokémon Center for a meal and restore Grimer's stamina."
After Grimer recovered at the Pokémon Center, Alex approached Nurse Joy for food, noticing the injured Pokémon were all scorched black, sparking his curiosity.
"Nurse Joy, what's going on? Why are all these Pokémon so severely injured?"
Nurse Joy sighed. "This is the fifteenth one this month. Everyone was defeated by Lt. Surge of the Vermilion City Gym."
"All of them? Is this Gym Leader really that formidable? I'm actually eager to try!"
"Don't underestimate him. Lt. Surge's Pokémon are powerful, and he never holds back, always attacking with full force, leaving challengers' Pokémon badly defeated," Nurse Joy explained, concern etched on her face.
"Is that so? This Gym Leader is truly something! Still, everyone is a Trainer, and even in a Gym battle, there's no need to beat the Pokémon so harshly! Luckily, the Pokémon Center is nearby, or these Trainers would be worried to death. By the way, Nurse Joy, do you know what Pokémon Lt. Surge uses?"
"Of course! Lt. Surge has a Voltorb, a Magnemite, and finally, a very powerful Raichu!"
"Raichu, huh? That's a rare Pokémon," Alex remarked.
"Yes, Raichu evolves from the already scarce Pikachu with a Thunder Stone. Lt. Surge's Raichu had extensive training before evolving, making it exceptionally strong. If you challenge him, be careful!"
"But it's odd. A while ago, someone named Ash from Pallet Town defeated Lt. Surge's Raichu with an unevolved Pikachu! It's incredible, given Raichu is Pikachu's evolved form, and there's almost no chance of winning. But Ash, after failing once, managed to win, surprising everyone."
"Ash has been here? And defeated Lt. Surge?" Alex marveled at Ash's speed. "He's probably heading to Celadon City now. I need to pick up the pace!"
"Thank you for your hospitality, Nurse Joy. I'm off to challenge the Gym!"
Alex rushed to the Vermilion City Gym and was greeted by a towering man, several sizes larger than him. Seeing Alex, he laughed, "Today's challenger is another little brat?"
"Little brat? You underestimate me? I'm here to defeat you, Alex Carter from Pallet Town!" Alex said, irritation creeping in.
"Oh? Another from Pallet Town, huh? I wonder if all you people from Pallet Town are as capable in battle?" Lt. Surge glanced at Alex disdainfully, annoying Alex further. Silently, he vowed to teach Lt. Surge a lesson and earn the Electric-type badge.
"Get ready to battle, little brat. The rules are three Pokémon per person. The first whose three Pokémon lose the ability to battle is the loser. Ready to be defeated?"
"That's my line! And don't call me a little brat, I'm Alex!" Alex retorted, finding Lt. Surge truly aggravating.
"Hahahaha, you've got guts, but you're still just a little brat. Voltorb, you're up first!"
"System Alert: Twenty meters away, Voltorb (owned)
Electric-type Pokémon: Voltorb is a spherical Pokémon with no hands or feet. Resembling a Poké Ball without buttons but with a face, the upper half is red, and the lower half is white. First seen in the factory where modern Poké Balls were invented, Voltorb is an accidental combination of advanced scientific technology and primitive animal instincts. Note: Voltorb will explode when excited.
Learned moves: Explosion, Charge, Rollout, Thunder Shock, Screech.
Combat Power: 550"
"This combat power isn't strong; it's still far from my Pokémon." "Go, Beedrill!"
As soon as Alex released his Shiny Beedrill, Lt. Surge laughed, "Kid, you're underestimating me, aren't you? What if your Beedrill is Shiny? Voltorb, Charge!"
Charge enhances Electric-type moves; he couldn't be given a chance to Charge. Alex commanded Beedrill: "Beedrill, Agility, then Double Team, and Pin Missile! Don't give him a chance to breathe!"
Alex knew Beedrill was at a disadvantage against Electric-types, but he wanted to see if Beedrill could turn the tide. In the anime, Ash even defeated Onix with Pikachu.
But the result made Alex eat his words. He thought Beedrill's attacks from all angles after Double Team would overwhelm Voltorb, but Voltorb rolled around the field at a good speed, making Beedrill's attacks miss. Simultaneously, it used Rollout to smash Beedrill's clones. Fortunately, the real Beedrill dodged due to Agility.
"No, if this continues, Beedrill won't last. Beedrill, use Hyper Beam to end it!" Alex ordered.
"Hahahaha, how could I let you succeed? Voltorb, Screech!"
Suddenly, a piercing sound spread. Beedrill was affected; Hyper Beam wasn't interrupted, but its charge time extended. It was then hit by Voltorb's powerful Thunder Shock, losing its ability to battle.
"You did well, Beedrill. You fought hard against a type disadvantage," Alex said, recalling Beedrill. "Next, I won't hold back. Go, Grimer!"
"Hmm? Another Shiny Pokémon. You're lucky, kid, but can you be my opponent?"
"Stop boasting. Grimer, Sludge Attack!" Alex commanded.
"Explosion!" Lt. Surge ordered Voltorb. Voltorb glowed white, preparing to explode.
"Grimer, quickly use Minimize!" Alex saw Voltorb about to explode and understood Lt. Surge wanted to deplete Grimer's stamina, so he used Minimize to reduce Explosion's damage.
"Not bad, kid. You made me waste a Pokémon for nothing. Next up is Magnemite, go!" Lt. Surge said angrily.
"System Alert: Twenty meters away, Magnemite (owned)
Electric/Steel-type Pokémon: A gray, mechanical Pokémon, Magnemite has one eye in the center of its spherical body. It has horseshoe-shaped Magnets on either side, with opposite poles. A large screw is on its head, with two small screws on its front. The Magnets at both ends have strong magnetic force and feed on electricity.
Learned moves: Thunder Wave, Flash Cannon, Thunderbolt, Light Screen, Supersonic.
Combat Power: 600
"Grimer, strike first! Use Sludge Attack after Double Team!" Alex no longer underestimated him. Lt. Surge had tricks; no wonder his Pokémon defeated so many at the Pokémon Center.
"Magnemite, Thunder Wave!" Lt. Surge commanded calmly.
"Thunder Wave can't stop my Sludge Attack. You miscalculated!" Alex laughed.
"Is that so? I never intended to block you, hahahaha," Lt. Surge laughed again.
With a bang, Magnemite hadn't lost its ability to battle and stood firm. Alex realized Magnemite likely had Sturdy, leaving it with one HP when it would otherwise be knocked out in one hit.
"Magnemite, Explosion!" Lt. Surge used the same tactic.
"Grimer, Minimize!" But this time, Grimer couldn't succeed. Hit by Thunder Wave earlier, it was paralyzed and couldn't move. Grimer and Magnemite both fell.
"Darn it, making me use my last Pokémon, Lt. Surge is a tough opponent," Alex said, sending out Haunter.
"Go, Raichu, show them what you've got!" Lt. Surge finally released Raichu.
"System Alert: Twenty meters away, Raichu (owned)
Electric-type Mouse Pokémon: An evolved form of Pikachu, its electric shock exceeds 100,000 volts, enough to make an Indian elephant faint. It stores much electricity, causing a faint current to pass through its body, glowing in the dark. A fully evolved Pokémon, Raichu can use Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.
Learned moves: Thunderbolt, Discharge, Thunder, Thunder Punch, Electro Ball, Agility.
Combat Power: 650"
"Uncle, you'd better be careful. Go, Haunter, Hypnosis!" Alex said with a playful smile.
"Raichu, use Agility to dodge!" Lt. Surge commanded.
"It's not that easy! Haunter, use Venoshock while spinning!" Haunter spun like a purple top, spewing venom. Raichu couldn't dodge and was poisoned.
"Press the advantage! Use Hypnosis after Double Team!" Alex said triumphantly.
"I won't let you succeed! Raichu, Charge in and use Thunder Punch!" Lt. Surge finally panicked, ordering Raichu to attack.
"I was waiting for you! Haunter, Dark Pulse!" Haunter waved its claws, emitting powerful black energy waves that hit Raichu, knocking it out.
Alex won the match with ease.
Lt. Surge handed Alex the Orange Badge. "I didn't see it coming; you're strong. Even when I battled Ash, it wasn't this exhilarating... I admit, I underestimated you."
Alex took the badge, thinking, "This was tough. It's time to let Haunter and the others absorb more energy! I remember there's a giant Pokémon Island nearby. According to the anime from my past life, Giovanni built it, and it's a good place to improve abilities." Smiling mischievously, Alex strode out.
