Maya's POV
"Get away from the windows!" a security guard shouts, pushing me and Sophie toward the back of the apartment.
Car doors slam outside. Footsteps pound up the stairs.
Someone's breaking down Sophie's apartment door.
The wood splinters. The lock breaks.
Men in black masks burst inside.
I scream. Sophie grabs a lamp like a weapon. The security guards pull their guns.
"Don't move!" the lead guard yells at the intruders.
But then one of the masked men pulls off his mask.
It's Derek.
"What the hell?" I gasp.
Derek holds up his hands. "Don't shoot! I'm here to help!"
Behind him, more people remove their masks. They're not attackers they're Derek's friends from law school. People he called to protect me.
"You broke down Sophie's door?" I shout at Derek.
"Your text said someone was coming for you! I panicked!" Derek looks around at the armed security guards. "I thought you were in danger!"
"I am in danger! But not from you breaking in like a crazy person!"
