Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

"More than 110,000." Logan checked his bank account balance on his mobile phone.

He had recently done two favors for the Lawrence family.

Although they had a bad reputation, they were never stingy with payments.

Shortly after returning home yesterday, he received the $100,000 reward.

Adding the first payment and deducting recent expenses, he had over $110,000 remaining.

This money would be enough for him to leave Santa Fe with the Professor and Caliban, and even maintain a relatively comfortable standard of living during their escape.

Setting down his phone, Logan sat on the couch and began to think about how to get rid of the Lawrence family.

After the last direct confrontation with S.H.I.E.L.D., Logan believed that, with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s capabilities, they had probably already identified them as the culprits in the theft of the Chitauri gun.

In the near future, S.H.I.E.L.D. might even send agents to Santa Fe to investigate the Lawrence family.

Furthermore, Donald, also a resident of Santa Fe, was a figure to be reckoned with.

This small town of Santa Fe might be about to witness a chaotic three-way battle.

Before that happens, he must find a way to leave as soon as possible.

He does not want to be caught up in this chaos.

And the most important thing for escaping is to withdraw all the money from his bank account.

After all, once his life as a fugitive officially begins, the bank card will become unusable; otherwise, anyone could easily locate him by checking his account transaction history.

Before that, Logan faces two thorny problems:

how to get rid of the Lawrence family and how to help Laura escape Donald's pursuit.

The former is relatively easy.

Although the Lawrence family's influence in Santa Fe is immense, it is limited to that city. Once Logan and his group leave Texas, the Lawrence family's influence will be greatly reduced.

As long as he acts quickly enough, before the Lawrence family can react, and leaves Texas with the Professor and Caliban, the danger will be greatly minimized.

As for the latter, that's where the real problem lies.

Donald greatly valued Laura, and they also had government support. Once Laura's whereabouts were discovered, regardless of the state, he could mobilize a large army.

"This is a huge problem," Logan thought, lying on the couch, looking at the decaying ceiling.

Of course, he could also choose to abandon Laura.

At that moment, Donald's attention was entirely focused on Laura; as long as he didn't intervene and allowed him to capture her, there would be no further trouble.

But that was clearly impossible.

First, Laura carried his genes; she was practically his "flesh and blood."

Second, Laura knew many new-generation mutants.

He wanted to organize a mutant group and gain more Prestige within the community, which required the involvement of these mutants.

This meant that he and Donald would be caught up in a life-or-death struggle…

Ring ring ring!

Just as Logan was wondering what to do, his phone rang urgently, completely interrupting his thoughts.

"Hello?" Logan answered.

"Logan, do you have time? There's a new mission. Meet us at the logistics warehouse," Chris's voice said on the other end of the line.

Logan was startled, sitting up on the couch with a frown. "I just rested for half a day."

"I can't help it," Chris said with a laugh. "You know, opportunities to make money are fleeting."

"Alright." Logan felt somewhat helpless but had to accept it; he wasn't ready to definitively break ties with the Lawrence family yet.

He asked helplessly, "What's the mission?"

"Go to the logistics warehouse first. Samuel and the others are on their way. They'll make arrangements when you arrive."

With that, Chris hung up.

Logan looked at his phone, sighed with resignation, and got up to head to the Lawrence family logistics warehouse.

At the entrance, he didn't see Chris, but he saw Josh and Samuel, along with a black man in charge of reception and two trucks with the Lawrence family logo.

"James, over here," Samuel said to Logan.

Logan walked over, looked at the black man, and then whispered to Samuel, "What mission? Why the rush?"

"I don't know," Samuel replied, shrugging. "Josh and I had just collected our reward when we got the call and rushed over."

Chris hadn't asked much about Conrad's death, but the payment hadn't been interrupted because of it.

Logan didn't ask further, but Samuel counted on his fingers and said, "We used part of that money to hold a prayer meeting for him; a priest officiated the ceremony in front of his clothes, and we donated the rest to charity. Consider it a good deed for that wicked man; hopefully, he suffers less in hell."

Logan didn't care where the money went, or even if Samuel and his friends had gambled it away.

He was more concerned about the mission itself.

"Is it still just the three of us on this mission?" Logan asked, looking at the black man beside him. The man wore a smart suit and was only in charge of reception; it was clear he wasn't participating in the mission.

"Of course not," a voice Logan didn't want to hear answered.

Logan frowned and looked towards the warehouse door, where Donald was approaching with a smile.

At that moment, the black man beside him interjected, "Mr. Chris has ordered that Mr. Donald also participate in this mission."

Logan watched Donald, who walked with a spring in his step.

He knew this guy was up to something, so he turned to the black man and said, "Can I refuse? Chris always assigns dangerous missions; I'm worried he'll hold us back."

"No," the black man said, shaking his head decisively. "This mission is fully funded by Mr. Donald; you must cooperate with everything he does."

Logan understood; Donald was the one funding the mission.

At that moment, Donald approached Logan and smiled: "Hey, James, don't underestimate me; I'm very capable too."

Logan looked at him, nodded, and followed Samuel to the first truck, opened the door, and sat down.

Before Samuel could even start the truck, Donald stopped him, saying, "Hey, buddy, you have to sit in the back."

He then sat down in the driver's seat.

Samuel had no choice; after all, Donald was the client, so he climbed into the back.

"What are you trying to do?" Logan asked, frowning as he watched Donald start the truck.

"Don't worry, I'm just taking something that rightfully belongs to us, all legal and compliant with the law."

Donald smiled innocently, poked his head out the window, patted the door, and shouted to the back: "Gentlemen, let's go!"
