The next morning, I had to go to the police station to give my statement for the charges against Caroline.
But it felt more like I was the one deciding her fate with my own hands.
"I didn't expect your father to cooperate and help you like this," Jane said, her eyes fixed on the road as she drove.
"Your expectation isn't wrong. I did it without asking him," I replied casually, flipping through the files from her on my lap.
"What?! Oh Jesus Christ. Are you saying you used your father's name on the officer without approval? Oh… I feel so lucky to witness this side of you before I get dementia."
I turned to her with a straight face, confused by her dramatic reaction.
Was I really that naive before?
"I just said my father sends his regards to the chief of police and will count on him to cooperate for the country in the future. And he immediately deployed a team to catch Caroline red-handed. I didn't sell anything." I went back to reading.
