Chapter 22: The Sorting Ceremony
The Great Hall stretched before Adam like a cathedral built from impossible dreams. The ceiling reflected a starry sky that seemed to go on forever, candles floated without support, and four long house tables stretched between hundreds of students whose chatter created a symphony of belonging. He stood with the nervous first-years—towering over eleven-year-olds at his fourteen-year-old height—while Professor McGonagall prepared the Sorting Hat for its annual judgment.
"Everyone's staring. They know I don't belong here."
But the stares weren't hostile—merely curious. Whispers followed him like smoke: "Transfer student, I heard." "Bit old for sorting, isn't he?" "Wonder what his story is." Adam had become interesting by virtue of being unusual, which was exactly what he'd hoped to avoid.
He spotted familiar faces throughout the hall. Harry Potter sat at the Gryffindor table with Ron and Hermione, their easy camaraderie unchanged by the summer break. Draco Malfoy held court at the Slytherin table, his pale features sharp with inherited arrogance. Other students Adam recognized from his merchant stall did double-takes, clearly surprised to see "that weird book seller" among the new arrivals.
"Calloway, Stephen!" McGonagall's voice rang clear.
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
The sorting began, each name called making Adam's stomach tighten with anticipation. Tiny first-years sat beneath the ancient hat, their faces cycling through terror and wonder as the magical artifact judged their souls. Houses cheered their new members with practiced enthusiasm, welcoming children who had never doubted their right to be here.
"Davies, Tracey!"
"RAVENCLAW!"
Adam's hands clenched at his sides. Soon. Very soon, everything would depend on a conversation with a thousand-year-old magical artifact that saw through lies as easily as glass.
"Wright, Adam!"
The hall fell silent. Adam walked forward on legs that felt like they belonged to someone else, hyperaware of hundreds of eyes tracking his movement. Dumbledore watched from the staff table, blue eyes sharp behind half-moon spectacles. McGonagall lifted the Sorting Hat with ceremonial care, and Adam sat on the stool that felt like a throne and a scaffold combined.
The hat descended over his eyes, and the world disappeared.
"Extraordinary."
The voice spoke directly into Adam's mind, ancient beyond measure and amused by something only it could perceive.
"What ARE you, child?"
Adam's Advanced Occlumency activated instinctively, raising mental barriers that had cost him everything to purchase. But the Sorting Hat bypassed them effortlessly—not through Legilimency, but through something older and more fundamental than magical technique.
"Cunning, yes. Ambition in abundance. Resourcefulness born of necessity. But underneath... what is this? Deep protectiveness for the helpless. Rage against injustice. Determination to expose corruption wherever it festers."
"Slytherin," Adam thought desperately. "I need Slytherin. Close to power, close to corruption I can tear down from within."
"You would excel in any house, you know. Gryffindor for your courage in facing rejection. Ravenclaw for your strategic mind. Hufflepuff for your loyalty to the broken and discarded..."
The hat paused, and Adam felt something probe deeper than any magical artifact should be able to reach.
"But there's more. You're not what you seem. Something... OTHER resides within you. Something that doesn't belong to this world."
Panic flooded Adam's mind. The hat was sensing the System—the impossible presence that granted him power beyond any wizard's reach. He pushed harder with his Occlumency, desperately trying to hide the one secret that could destroy everything.
"Fascinating," the hat mused. "You have secrets that even I cannot fully grasp. Mysteries wrapped in lies wrapped in determination. Very well, child who is not a child. Your path lies with those who understand that power is the only truth that matters."
"SLYTHERIN!"
The final word echoed through the Great Hall like a pronouncement of fate. The Slytherin table applauded politely—not enthusiastically, since Adam was nobody to them—and he walked toward his new house on unsteady legs.
He sat at the table's end, acutely aware of being evaluated by his new housemates. Draco Malfoy, several seats down, spared him barely a glance. Pansy Parkinson whispered to Millicent Bulstrode, both shooting curious looks his way. But two students offered acknowledgment: Daphne Greengrass nodded with cool appraisal, while Theodore Nott's intelligent eyes suggested genuine interest rather than mere curiosity.
"Wright, right?" Adrian Pucey, a prefect, leaned over as the feast began. "Transfer student?"
"Homeschooled," Adam replied carefully. "My guardian died over the summer."
"Sorry for your loss." Pucey's sympathy seemed genuine, if brief. "I'll show you the common room after the feast. Word of advice—stay out of trouble. Slytherin doesn't need more bad publicity, and the other houses already think we're all future Dark wizards."
"Some of you are. But not all."
The message was clear: Adam was on probation, required to prove himself worthy of the house that prized ambition above all else. As the feast continued—roast beef and Yorkshire pudding that put his street-scavenged meals to shame—Adam caught Dumbledore's gaze from the staff table.
The Headmaster's eyes lingered with that familiar sense of wrongness, the same disquiet Adam had triggered during their orphanage encounter. But Dumbledore couldn't place the source, couldn't identify what exactly made the boy seem like a puzzle with missing pieces.
Adam looked away first, his heart hammering. He was in the castle, sorted into his chosen house, surrounded by the children of Death Eaters and Ministry officials. But the real test was just beginning.
After the feast, Adam followed his new housemates down stone steps that descended into the castle's depths. The Slytherin common room existed beneath the lake—green-tinted light filtered through windows that showed underwater views, leather furniture arranged around a massive fireplace, cold stone walls that whispered of ancient ambitions.
It was beautiful and slightly sinister, exactly as he'd imagined.
"Third-year boys' dormitory," Pucey directed, pointing toward a corridor lined with doors. "You'll be with Nott, Zabini, Higgs, and Montague."
Adam's roommates greeted him with varying degrees of interest. Theodore Nott offered a reserved nod—polite but cautious. Blaise Zabini barely glanced up from his unpacking. Terrence Higgs and Graham Montague introduced themselves with the casual superiority of pure-blood children who'd never questioned their place in the world.
Adam claimed the bed nearest the door—strategic positioning for nighttime activities—and began unpacking his carefully curated possessions. Everything had been chosen to suggest the right background: expensive but not ostentatious, practical but refined, the belongings of someone raised in magical society but outside its mainstream institutions.
As his roommates settled into sleep, Adam lay awake staring at the green bed canopy above him. He had done it. After two years of struggle, rejection, and careful deception, he was at Hogwarts. In Slytherin House. Surrounded by the children of future enemies and present conspirators.
And somewhere above, Dumbledore suspected something was fundamentally wrong.
