I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, my brain replayed the same moment on a loop—Mr Knight standing behind me in the hallway, his voice low, telling me not to come home late. Like he had no right to say it. Like he had any reason to care.
It made no sense.
And the worst part?
It felt like he cared, even though everything about him screamed the opposite.
By morning, I was irritated for no good reason. Maybe because my sleep was ruined. Maybe because his stupid voice had taken up too much space in my head.
Maybe because the lunch with Daniel had been so nice, and Mr Knight just… ruined the afterglow with that confused, over-controlling attitude of his.
I walked into the kitchen earlier than usual, wanting a quiet start. But luck wasn't on my side.
He was already there.
