Chapter 13 - A Plan

To be honest, when Deacon had started screaming into the pillow, he had not really expected it to help in any way. But then, whether it was because of the release of all of the emotion that he was bottling up, or if it was the lack of oxygen making him think of crazy things, an idea had blossomed within him.

But Deacon, realizing how insane it was, had decided not to even give it a second thought.

But then, Slater had started crying next to him, actual real tears, and Deacon had not liked that one bit. He'd never seen Haley Slater cry before, and he found that he never wanted to see it again.

Slater was all fire and brimstone, she was quick retorts, and a sharp tongue, whenever the two of them clashed. She was never supposed to look small, quivering as she cried, muffled sobs making her tiny frame shake.

It was not something that Deacon wanted to see, and so, in an effort to stem the flow of tears, he had told her that he had a plan.

Now Slater was sitting up on her side of the bed, and he was sitting up on his own side, with her staring at him, expectantly.

"Well, what is the plan? What are we going to do to get ourselves out of this?" Deacon swallowed.

For a moment, he entertained the thought of just telling her that he had been kidding. But just thinking of the tears that would probably follow, if he said something like that made Deacon decide against it.

The idea that had come to him during his screaming session was a crazy one, but it was an idea nonetheless. So he was going to sell it to her as confidently as possible.

"Think about it Slater, right now you and I are the only relevant people who know that we are married,"

Actually now that he said it, Deacon was not so certain of that. Trying not to panic, he reached for his phone and began scrolling through it. A few moments later he let out a relieved sigh.

"There's nothing in any of the magazines, nor on social media about a Slater-Roth wedding. So it seems that in that regard we were lucky, no one filmed us making this mistake,"

A heavyweight lifted off Deacon's shoulders at that. Across from him Slater also seemed relieved, but also confused.

"What does other people not knowing that we are married have to do with anything. They are going to find out eventually," She pointed out Deacon shook his head.

Regretting the action when it felt as though his brains were sloshing around inside his skull. After waiting for the room to settle, and his head to hurt a little less, he began speaking.

"People do not know that we are married. If we stay quiet about it they will not know for a while longer, and during that period of time you and I can quietly nip out, get a divorce, and then carry on with our lives, we will not be married anymore,"

Clearly in shock, Slater made a sound like she had just been kicked in the gut. Then she resumed biting on her bottom lip. But Deacon was pleased to see that she was not dismissing the idea immediately. She was at least giving it some serious thought.

When she finally did speak, her words settled him even more.

"Roth, your idea is crazy, but it is a kind of crazy that I can get behind. Plus, it kind of makes sense, "

What?! How on Earth could his idea make sense? She had literally just called it crazy, Deacon himself knew it was crazy. Before he could ask, Slater continued talking.

"You and I got married in secret, so it only makes sense that we divorce in secret. It is nobody else's business, and once we have signed the divorce papers. This whole thing, will no longer be an issue for us. We can just go on about our lives, this secret will die with us,"

When she worded his insane suggestion like that, it actually made a lot of sense.

"So you and I are in agreement then, a secret divorce for a secret marriage,"

Slater nodded.

"No one can ever find out about this Roth. I was losing my mind thinking about how my grandfather would react to the news. Now I am glad that he never has to,"

Deacon could not help but grimace at that, he had only met Albert Slater a few times.

But the old man had the aura of a headmaster, and such people could be a nightmare when they felt offended.

Adding to that what would have no doubt been his own mother's disappointment at being kept out of her son's wedding. But also his father's anger at him daring to marry a Slater it would have been too much.

"So you are completely on board with the two of us having a quiet divorce then?" Slater nodded

"Of course. I want out of this nightmare as much as you do. So let's plan it out so that we can get it over and done with as quickly as possible. Why don't we try to..."

Slater's words were cut off by a loud sound that reminded Deacon of a large beast roaring.

He stiffened looking around the room.

Was there something else in there?

Was it like that crazy movie where some men had woken up with a tiger in the bathroom?

Before he could go and investigate, Slater's ears turned bright red.

The blush on her cheeks easy to see,

"Sorry," She mumbled.

And Deacon realized exactly what the unearthly sound had been...her stomach had been rumbling, Slater was hungry. Now that he thought on it Deacon himself was starving. There had been a persistent ache in his stomach since waking up. But, as with a lot of the other discomforts that he was in, he had ignored it in favour of trying to deal with the bigger situation.

But now that they had the beginnings of a plan. It would not hurt for them to take a bit of a break, if anything it would help.

With food in their stomach and maybe some pain killers. Their hangovers would be more under control, allowing them to think more clearly.

"How about you go take a shower and I will contact room service. By the time that the food arrives. I'm certain that the two of us would be done freshening up," Taking the out, Slater nodded, her face still flaming.

But Deacon did not care enough to make fun of her for that.

He was too glad that they had a possible way out to care.

Soon he would be a divorced man and his life would be his own again.
