"Giga Blaster!" MetalGreymon fired again.
"Horn Buster!" MegaKabuterimon followed up with his own blast.
"Celestial Arrow!" Angewomon loosed her shot.
Facing attacks from three directions, Myotismon unleashed "Grisly Wing" and charged to meet them.
The attacks collided, bursting into a blinding flash. Myotismon's silhouette traced a parabolic arc and slammed into the ground. As the three Digimon closed in, he flicked his cape—his body split into a storm of bats that scattered in every direction. MetalGreymon and the others hurried to attack the swarm, but there were too many; their strikes only knocked down a small fraction.
Watching the bats vanish into the night, the three Digimon were wreathed in white light and reverted. The kids rushed to meet their partners.
"I didn't expect Kari to really be the eighth child," Izzy said, surprised. "Now all eight DigiDestined are together. Next up is defeating Myotismon."
"Yeah—but for now, we should head home," Tai said after checking the time.
After saying goodbye to Izzy, Tai and Kari started back toward their apartment.
On a small island in the river, the scattered bats gathered and re-formed into Myotismon, though he looked much weaker.
"Cursed DigiDestined… I'll see you dead."
The next morning—
Yuko Kamiya hummed as she washed dishes. On TV, the news cut to last night's footage from Shibaura: "From the images, it does look like two monsters fighting. But are they really monsters? And how are they connected to the elephant and dinosaur seen at Highton View Terrace?" The shots were long-distance and blurry. "We may see more such unidentified creatures; citizens are urged to stay alert. In other news, from last night through early morning, multiple cases of women suffering anemia were admitted to hospitals…"
The doorbell rang. Yuko went to open it. "Tai—Izzy's here."
Tai ushered an overcoated Agumon sideways through the doorway. Kari followed with Gatomon acting like a normal cat.
"Morning, Tai. Morning, Kari."
"Morning."
"Good morning, everyone," Tentomon said, bundled in clothing.
"Nice outfit, Tentomon. It suits you."
The group headed to their meeting spot to talk about what came next.
"Morning, everyone!" Sora called from a distance, Biyomon fluttering at her side. Mimi pushed a baby stroller with Palmon seated inside. "Palmon, you're heavy. Get out."
"No! Weren't you the one who told me to sit?"
"Well, I changed my mind." The two were as adorably bickery as ever.
"We made too much noise last night," Sora said, worried.
"Yeah. The morning news hasn't stopped talking about it," Matt added.
"Can't be helped," Izzy sighed. "If Myotismon's minions are wrecking things, we have to fight them."
Silence fell. Myotismon's forces kept appearing in front of humans, and the kids couldn't stop that—on paper, they only had eight Digimon who could fight.
In Myotismon's hideout—
"Looks like it can't be helped. You forced me to this. DigiDestined—this time you're dead. DemiDevimon!"
"H-Here! I'm here, Lord Myotismon—oof!" DemiDevimon zoomed in so fast he smashed into the wall.
Myotismon shot him a glance. "Gather everyone. Bring them all here."
"Yes, Lord Myotismon!"
Myotismon grinned hideously. "You're as good as dead."
A dense fog began forming over Odaiba, slowly rolling downward. Myotismon stood on the small river island with countless minions arrayed behind him—blank-eyed and motionless. Overhead, swarms of bats descended. One by one, Digimon vanished, their bodies becoming black smoke that flowed into Myotismon. His body began to swell.
Across Odaiba, signals started to fail. In just three hours, the sky over the district was smothered in fog.
On a lawn, the kids were still debating their next move when they realized something was wrong. It was noon, yet the sky was darkening.
"I don't think we need to discuss anymore," Tai said, face grave.
Everyone looked to him to hear what he would say.
Tai drew a breath. "Myotismon's appeared—on the little island in the river. But his body's gigantic now."
"What?" Gasps all around.
"Beep-beep, beep-beep." Izzy's laptop chimed.
He opened it—a message from Gennai.
"Kids, this is bad. Myotismon has absorbed all of his underlings and is now enormous. The fog overhead is his doing; it won't clear unless you defeat him. His power has increased drastically compared to before. I'm sending you his location. Be careful!"
"What do we do?" Mimi faltered, panic rising.
"We have to defeat Myotismon, or the fog won't lift. Alright—let's move. The eight of us are together now. We can beat him," Izzy said, trying to rally the group.
"Right!"
This shouldn't be the same VenomMyotismon as in the original—he's absorbed all his underlings, which puts his power on a whole different level. In the show, VenomMyotismon was a Mega in classification but wasn't truly at Mega-level energy. Now, with a full reservoir from his minions, he started toward the shore. Beside his massive form, the high-rises looked small.
From a distance, the kids stared up at VenomMyotismon's towering body, awestruck.
"How did he get that big?" Mimi breathed.
"This is…" Izzy typed frantically. "A Mega."
The kids crowded around the screen and read:
"An undead Mega Digimon evolved from Myotismon. With an outer shell like an insect and a bestial lower body, this is the true, evolved form of the Dark Lord Myotismon. It's driven by impulses of destruction and slaughter, having completely lost reason. Special attacks include 'Venom Infusion,' which injects a destructive computer virus that annihilates the enemy Digimon's constituent data, and 'Pandemonium Flame,' a frenzy of fire pillars that instantly turns anything they touch to ash."
"So there's a stage even above Ultimate?" Sora said, struggling to accept it.
"Agumon, test his strength," Tai said.
"Tai, you can't send Agumon alone. We should all fight together," Gabumon protested.
Tai looked around, trying to persuade them. "A Mega's power isn't something Ultimates can handle. Aside from Angemon and Angewomon—whose holy attribute boosts damage against dark types—the rest of you won't do much to VenomMyotismon."
"But Agumon's an Ultimate too," Joe said, confused.
"Unless…" Izzy began, starting to catch on.
Tai smiled faintly and raised the Digivice toward Agumon. "Mega digivolution."
"Agumon mega digivolve to… WarGreymon!"
A Digimon none of them had seen before—its body clad head to toe in Chrome Digizoid—appeared before their eyes.
WarGreymon streaked toward VenomMyotismon, leaving a row of kids gaping, mouths wide open.
Izzy snapped out of it first, fingers clacking over the keys. "Found it. WarGreymon—Agumon's Mega. Special attack: gathering the atmosphere's energy into a single point and firing—'Terra Force.'"
WarGreymon faced VenomMyotismon and unleashed "Terra Force." Unable to dodge in time, VenomMyotismon took the blast head-on and crashed to the ground.
"Damn you!" VenomMyotismon roared and heaved himself up, but his massive bulk couldn't keep up with WarGreymon's speed. WarGreymon weaved around him, nimble on the wing, pelting him again and again with "Terra Force." VenomMyotismon bellowed and swung wildly, but never connected.
"Are we just going to stand here and watch our friend fight?" Gabumon gritted out.
"But we're only Ultimates, and they're both Megas," Tentomon said.
Matt turned to Tai. "How did Agumon evolve to Mega? Can't Gabumon do it too? Tai, do you have a way?"
All eyes turned to Tai, full of hope.
Tai sighed. "I don't know about the others—but Gabumon can. It's dangerous, though."
"What kind of danger?" Matt pressed.
"I've seen a prophecy that circulates in the Digital World: when the number of Digimon is sufficient, the true body of the Undying Demon King will appear. When the angels fire arrows of Light and Hope at the ones they love most, a miracle will occur," Tai said, choosing his words.
"What does that mean?" Izzy frowned.
"It means Angemon must shoot the Arrow of Hope at Matt—and the 'miracle' is Gabumon's Mega evolution."
"Then what's the Arrow of Light?" Izzy asked.
"Could that be Kari? Her Crest is Light. But what does the 'miracle' mean—Agumon's already Mega," Sora said, grasping the idea, then stumbling over it.
Far off, VenomMyotismon and WarGreymon kept clashing, the devastation around them spreading into a wasteland.
