Chapter 4 - Going Out

Veritas woke to see the sunlight casting its golden glow inside his room. Veritas grunt, looking down to see Goldy sleeping next to him.

Getting up from the bed, Goldy stirred as it felt Veritas moving and getting off the bed.

Goldy let off an annoyed bark, still deciding to sleep as it laid on the bed.

Veritas laughed before standing up. His body and mind felt tired, most particularly his mind. The whispers welcomed him once again as they speak incoherent blabbers into his mind.

Veritas' face scrunched, he was really annoyed by the whisper but he didn't know what to do about it. He hadn't test on how to destroy the spikes and clear up his tainted sea, and he hypothesized that those two things were the cause of the whispers...

Veritas sucked it up and tried his best to ignore the whispers. Honestly, the whispers weren't something annoying if he was awake and not trying to rest... But when he was trying to sleep?

Oh, the horror.

Veritas looked at the cloak hanging on the edge of the bed, it belonged to the Agent. He took it because maybe the cloak could be a high tier Artifact? Not that he would know, because his System was offline after all.

Plus, he didn't know how to bind an Artifact so it belonged to him.

He had only been conditioning himself physically and learning some bits of System and the Eden Academy along with the danger levels of the Corrupted.

Veritas wore the cloak, and seeing that he didn't feel anything weird or something empowering him, he shrugged.

'Well, having a cloak in itself is useful.'

Veritas looked at the bag resting on the wall, canned food and water supplies inside the bag and the pockets. He wasn't sure on what to buy so he simply bought food and water.

As for his weapon... well, his body was enough, he thought.

He could feel how his body had been enhanced, his strength was stronger than when he was a normal human, his durability and stamina too. It was proven by the bag full of supplies when he walked out of the store yesterday.

Veritas wore the bag, walking towards the door of his studio and opening it.

Veritas looked at the dog before a thought slapped him on the face.

'Wouldn't the dog feel super lonely or something? I should... mm...'

Veritas looked at the wall next to him, it belonged to one of his acquaintance.

Blinking a few times, Veritas sighed before hesitantly walking up to his neighbor's door and knocking on it.

"Mr. Edward, it's me, Veritas."

"Oh... wait a moment, young man."

The sound of footsteps soon resounded and the door finally opened, Veritas looked at the old man in front of him.

His hair were grey, his face wrinkled with a full beard covering his jaw and mouth. The old man, was built, not exactly built like a muscular man but one could see the muscles that atrophied.

The man was tall, but Sirius stood taller as he bowed at Edward.

"Sorry to disturb your morning Mr. Edward... I wanted to talk to you about something."

"What is it, Ver?"

"I assume you heard the barks that came from my room? I had a dog just now, it was lost and I found it on the alleyway near the apartment, and now it was staying inside the house... I'm planning on going to the neighboring city, there's something I need to take care of."

"Ah... do you need me to take care of the dog?"

Veritas nodded awkwardly, a bit shameful for requesting an old man to be adding one more to the list he needed to take care of.

"I already bought the food, and while I think it doesn't need any taking care, I just thought that maybe since I don't know how long I will be away. It would need someone to accompany."

Edward nodded in understanding before smiling at Veritas.

"It is possible, I just need to accompany him whenever I could, correct? In fact, I was getting kind of lonely, so I accept your request, Ver."

Veritas' face morphed into a wide smile as he nodded at Edward.

"Yes, thank you very much Mr. Edward!"

Edward merely smiled at him before nodding.

"Take care of yourself out there. If there is a Fracture, just run. Focus on yourself, you are too young to die or experience something like a Fracture."

Veritas nod gratefully, well in his mind, he was sweating bullets... because he may or may not be purposefully looking for a Fracture. But he was simply planning on hunting some Kilo Corrupted and get some power...

Not that it was ever a good idea, but he had to do it.

The Agent was coming for him, for his body.

After all, Veritas had stolen the Agent's authority and had been casted away from his body by the System.

It might come back... so Veritas need to prepare himself in case the Agent did.

Veritas handed Edward the key and bow gratefully.

"I hope I'll be back in around a few days... if all goes well."

Edward nodded at the young man as Veritas walked towards the elevator... now, he had to go out of the border.

Veritas walked to the west of the Apartment, towards one of the cardinal directions, where there were posts stationed to guard the border.

Now, he was headed to the west border.

The journey there didn't take long due to him living on the suburbs of Eden City.

Arriving on the border, he could see guards stationed and checking for people that arrived.

Veritas remembered that to get out of the border, one needed to show their IDs and their belongings, whether they had any Artifacts or not.

They didn't really care if one were walking on foot and not by a car or a train. Though, most people usually used trains for methods of transportation between cities, rarely do people use cars.

If they do, it would be because they were either a Guardian or they were daredevils.

The trains go underground, not on the surface due to the fact that there were Fractures on the open and roaming Corrupted.

There was three type of terrains, one, a natural terrain with roaming Corrupted, two, a natural terrain infected by the Corrupted, showing signs of Corruption and making the Corrupted there stronger.

Finally, the third, an unnatural terrain formed by a Corrupted. These terrains were formed by Corrupted that either had an ability to change the terrain to suit their need or... worst-case, an Agent's terrain.

Those two latter terrains were what one call a Fracture.

Walking up to the border, Veritas was stopped by a guard as the guard demanded asked him where he was going and his ID before leading him to a room and gave statements from him that he did not have any Artifacts.

It was a fairly simple regulation.

After finishing his words, the guard stopped the recording and allowed Veritas to pass the border.

Veritas saw the vast expand of land, untouched and... desolate.

Overgrown grasses and trees were to his north, nature — despite the ravages of time and Agents' attacks, had endured, thriving with vitality after time for recovery.

Veritas lets out a sigh before walking towards the patches of grass.

After a short while, he reached down and feel the itchy grass as it lightly stroke his hand and legs.

Veritas smiled lightly...

This was the first time he had gone out, out of the border.

He had never taken a step out of the city simply because... he didn't have time, didn't have the luxury to go out.

Working to survive, he had endlessly worked his body to the point of exhaustion after getting out of the orphanage.

So... walking through the grasses, he felt... relieved, as if a small part of his exhaustion had been soothe.

But still... life didn't give him a decent amount of break.

Veritas sighed, remembering the Agent's attempt on recontrolling his body.

Well... as long as he didn't use the authority, he would be fine.

Veritas steadied himself before disappearing into the abundant trees.
