Chapter 29 - Rising Mana

The morning light filtered softly into the courtyard, where Alex had laid out his cultivation space. The heirloom from the auction gleamed faintly beside him, and the scroll gifted by Riven lay carefully rolled open on a nearby stand. Today, Alex intended to push himself beyond his current limits, testing both the heirloom's power and the techniques from the fire mana scroll.

Kael joined him, standing a respectful distance away, hands behind his back, observing Alex's movements as he prepared the cultivation arrays. Unlike Alex, Kael was working with Air mana—swift, precise, and elegant—but he followed the same meticulous discipline.

"You've been advancing quickly," Kael remarked, his voice calm but sincere. "Your technique is precise… your focus is unmatched."

Alex nodded, adjusting the positioning of the heirloom's mana conduits. "It's about control and intention. Mana isn't just power; it's an extension of thought. If your mind wavers, so will your cultivation."

Kael mirrored the stance, summoning a gentle spiral of Air mana. "I'll keep pace. I won't let you outdo me today."

A soft smile tugged at Alex's lips. "I don't want you to just keep pace. I want you to grow stronger in your own way."

Hours passed as they cultivated together. The heirloom pulsed steadily, its magic harmonizing with Alex's flow, amplifying his fire mana with an almost sentient awareness. He channeled the techniques from Riven's scroll, the flames dancing at his fingertips, precise and controlled, unlike anything he had achieved before.

Kael's Air mana whirled around him in intricate patterns, supporting Alex's movements and occasionally providing feedback with small gusts that tested his balance and focus. The synergy between them was natural yet unspoken, each learning from the other without needing to state it aloud.

By the time the sun reached its zenith, both young nobles were exhausted but exhilarated. Alex collapsed onto a mat, breathing steadily, the heirloom still faintly glowing beside him. Kael, equally spent, bowed slightly.

"You've surpassed your previous level," Kael said quietly, admiration evident in his tone. "I can feel the difference in your mana flow."

Alex allowed himself a small laugh, brushing sweat from his brow. "Thanks. And you… your control over Air mana is improving exponentially. You're ready for far greater challenges."

They sat in companionable silence for a moment, the soft rustle of the courtyard wind mingling with the residual hum of magic. The bond between them—mentor, student, ally, and friend—was strengthened, yet unspoken lines of respect and loyalty were firmly in place.

And somewhere in the back of Alex's mind, he smiled at the thought of Riven, the one who had given him the scroll, and the name that made him grin every time it was whispered: Cupcake. That nickname belonged to Riven alone.
