Chapter 2 - Ragna

A frail looking young man between the age of 17 to 18 years clad in a gold color like school uniform stood at the edge of a mountain cliff with a colorless look in his face, pale skin and dark circle under his eyes.

There were currently tears in his eyes as he stared at the marooned colored sky.

"What is the point of being born as an awakener when I can not become stronger no matter how hard I train?"

He said with a crestfallen voice, as he chuckled in self ridicule and mockery.

"I sure awakened a shifty bloodline. I hope I get reborn with a better one, after I die…..

Ragna was born in an age of awakening, where awakening powerful ability determined everything in the society, down to living and how you were treated in the society.

The age of awakening first appeared in the world centuries ago, back then everyone was just living their normal daily ordinary life, when what seemed like an emergence of apocalypse struck earth.

That day, which was supposed to be like every other day, took a turn for the worse. At first no one understood what was happening as the entire earth was covered by a gloomy atmosphere.

But when people began to scream their lungs out, and lost consciousness, with no sign of stopping, did everyone begin to panic. Of course, the governments were no different, by then it was already late as the world was experiencing the same apocalyptic phenomenon.

Eventually when these people who had lost consciousness and fallen asleep for days reawakened, the world was taken by a huge surprise, a surprise no one was prepared for.

People Awakening different kinds of abilities, quickly overwhelmed the entire earth, plunging the world into chaos and such. No one understood what was happening, but they could all use strange powers.

In the end, a set of people calling themselves Espers, pugilist, Mage, and psychics, soon formed and separated themselves in the world, with the government referring to them as awakeners.

In the end these awakeners, either working with the government or forming groups among themselves, had no choice but to put a stop to the rampage on earth. Armed with miraculous abilities, they restored peace and sense of order.

However, while there those who were fortunate to awaken as string awakeners there also those who were also those unfortunate to not awaken any abilities. Among such people were Ragna.

His parents were awakeners but had died in an unfortunate incident, however, he was lucky enough to be taken in by his maternal relatives who were also awakeners. However, their abilities were a low-class one which solidified their status as average in society.

When Ragna was adopted by his maternal relations, they had hoped he would awaken a fairly high-class ability so he could change their status in the society, due to the fact that his parents had unique professions when they were alive.

This was because unique professions could always evolve into middle class or even higher class professions albeit chances were slim, nevertheless, there were cases of it happening in the past.

And since awakening a powerful profession determined your fate and status in society, they had hoped for a miracle to happen.

Unfortunately, Ragna could not awaken a high class or even a middle class profession, even worse had failed to awaken any ability.

His ability had failed to awaken completely, although he could perform superhuman feats when placed against non awakeners, however, compared to awakeners who could run around the world in minutes or lift a nine story building with pure strength, Ragna's was nothing special when compared to them.

Ragna's uncle and aunt were extremely disappointed when they discovered he had failed to completely awaken any ability, meaning no matter how much he trained in his entire lifetime he wouldn't become stronger.

Ragna, who was only seven at that time, soon realized the cruelty of the society and world he was born in, to top it all his relatives' attitude towards him changed.

Although he was seen as a burden by them and they would sometimes vent their frustrations on him verbally before, but after his failed awakening the little love and care they showed seemed to have disappeared into thin air.

Taking a turn for the worse, as they would not only abuse him verbally venting their frustrations of him being a burden to them and a failed awakener, they would also do so physically, while at their good mood they would not remember to feed him throughout the day without being abused physically, and whenever he complained of hunger.

"PIECE OF TRASH! WHY DON'T YOU JUST DIE? IS ALL YOU'RE GOOD AT JUST WASTING AWAY EATING OUR HARDEARNED FOOD?"

His relatives would bark at him with anger and frustrations.

At that age it was hard for him to understand what he had done wrong and would always apologize and try to do even better at school just to please them, but he soon noticed that he was being treated the same way at school after his classmates knew about him failing to awaken.

As he grew he became rather isolated because of it, and couldn't make friends in school and would always be bullied by his peers who had better ability.

While his teachers would ignore his complaints, his classmates would mock him for being able to awaken. No one cared about him because he had failed to awaken.

Ragna who had once dreamed of joining the special awakeners federation, and becoming one of the strongest Esper in the world soon realized no matter how hard he trained his body, he wouldn't be accepted because he was not able to awaken.

At that time Ragna's nephew had just turned three years old, and had awakened as mage, with a high rank and rare summoning ability.

Ragna's relatives were so joyful that they would curse at his dead parent for giving birth to a wretched child like him, while totally ignoring him and giving all their love and attention to their child.

Although he never understood why they hated him so much, Ragna still did his best to love his younger nephew like his brother, not until the day he tried to defend his nephew from his school bullies and was mocked by him for failing to awaken any ability.

"Don't call yourself my brother, I don't have a brother, and even if I did it would never be someone who failed to awaken!"
