Chapter 6 - Giyuu’s family

Sanemi raises an eyebrow, intrigued.

"Why you're what? Finish your sentence, Giyuu."

He steps closer, closing the distance between them, his eyes fixed on Giyuu's face. Giyuu clears his throat, maintaining eye contact despite the intensity of Sanemi's gaze.

"Nothing. Just... you're different."

Muichiro tugs at Giyuu's sleeve, interrupting the moment.

"Giyuu, can we go dance now?"

Giyuu relieved for the distraction.

"Not yet, Muichiro. Let's finish our drinks first." Sanemi snorts at the interruption, but his eyes are still locked on Giyuu. "Dance? That kid wants to dance?"

He tries to suppress a smirk, finding the situation both amusing and endearing. Giyuu gives Sanemi a warning look.

"Yes, he does. And he's quite good at it."

Muichiro starts swaying slightly to the music, humming softly to himself. Sanemi crosses his arms, a teasing glint in his eyes.

"Prove it then. Show me his moves."

He leans against the wall, clearly enjoying the challenge. Giyuu sighs dramatically but can't hide his amusement.

"Fine. Muichiro, show Sanemi your special dance."

Muichiro perks up excitedly and begins doing a simple, yet surprisingly graceful dance move. His movements are precise and rhythmic. Sanemi watches in genuine surprise.

"Well I'll be damned... he's actually good."

He uncrosses his arms, genuinely impressed by Muichiro's dancing skills. Giyuu smiles proudly at Muichiro's performance.

"Told you. He takes after me."

Muichiro finishes with a flourish and looks up at Sanemi for approval.

"Did I do good, Mr. Shinazugawa?"

Sanemi nods, trying to maintain his tough exterior.

"Yeah, kid. You did great."

Tanjiro waves enthusiastically.

"Giyuu! Muichiro!"

Nezuko stands beside her brother, smiling shyly at everyone. Giyuu smiles warmly at the Kamado siblings.

"Tanjiro, Nezuko. Nice to see you both."

Muichiro immediately runs over to play with them, forgetting his previous shyness. Giyuu sigh shaking his head in amusement.

"It's rough to have three children with 21. Can I leave Muichiro with you two" Tanjiro nods eagerly.

"Of course! We'll take care of him!"

Nezuko makes a protective gesture towards Muichiro, showing she's willing to watch over him.

Sanemi looks at Giyuu with mild concern. "You're leaving him with kids? What if he needs his something?"

Giyuu checks his watch.

"His sleeping time is in one hour. They'll be fine."

He trusts Tanjiro's responsible nature and Nezuko's caring demeanor.

Sanemi grumbles but doesn't argue.

"Just don't let him wander off too far."

He watches as the three children start playing together, Muichiro already laughing and chatting with them. Tanjiro pulls out some snacks from his backpack. "Muichiro, want some rice crackers?"

Muichiro nods eagerly.

"Yes please!"

Nezuko sits down with them, making sure Muichiro gets his share. Sanemi observes the scene, a softness in his eyes that he quickly tries to hide

"They're good kids."

Giyuu glances at Sanemi

"They're practically siblings. Always looking out for each other."

The children form a tight circle, sharing their snacks and playing quietly, creating their own little world. Sanemi watches Tanjiro help Muichiro with a cracker that's stuck.

"Reminds me of when I was their age..."

His voice trails off, a hint of nostalgia in his tone. Giyuu notices the change in Sanemi's demeanor.

"You had siblings too, right?"

He remembers hearing about Sanemi's large family during staff meetings. Sanemi his expression darkens slightly.

"Yeah. But that's in the past."

He shifts uncomfortably, clearly not wanting to discuss his family history further. Giyuu decides to change the subject, sensing Sanemi's discomfort. "Want to grab another drink? The punch is pretty good."

He gestures towards the refreshment table, trying to lighten the mood. Sanemi relaxes a bit at the offer.

"Sure, why not. I could use something stronger than juice anyway."

He starts walking towards the table, occasionally glancing back at the children to make sure they're still okay. Giyuu follows closely behind, keeping pace with Sanemi

"They'll be fine. Tanjiro is responsible enough to handle it."

He reaches for a cup, filling it with the punch and offering it to Sanemi first. Sanemi takes the cup and takes a long sip, the alcohol evidently in it.

"I know he is. Just... makes me think of my siblings sometimes."

He swirls the liquid in his cup, lost in thought for a moment before looking at Giyuu. Giyuu sips his own drink quietly, giving Sanemi space to speak if he wants to.

"It's okay to miss them."

His voice is gentle, understanding the complex emotions behind Sanemi's words. Sanemi snorts derisively.

"Miss them? I don't miss them. They're all dead."

He downs the rest of his punch in one go, setting the empty cup down harder than necessary. Giyuu places a hand on Sanemi's shoulder.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up."

His touch is firm yet comforting, showing genuine concern for his colleague.

"Well Genya is left, but it's not the same."Giyuu removes his hand but stays close.

"Genya is still family. Even if it's different."

He knows how complicated sibling relationships can be, especially for someone like Sanemi. Sanemi lets out a bitter laugh.

"Yeah, right. We had yesterday a fight."

His fists clench at his sides, a mix of anger and hurt evident in his expression. Giyuu watches Sanemi's reaction carefully. "Maybe you should try reaching out to him."

He knows he's treading on thin ice with this suggestion, but feels compelled to offer it. Sanemi glares at Giyuu

"And say what? "Hey, sorry for being a shitty brother"?"

His voice drips with sarcasm, but there's a hint of regret in his eyes. Giyuu meets his glare with calm determination.

"Sometimes the truth is all you need. Even if it's painful."

He maintains eye contact, refusing to back down from the conversation. Sanemi scoffs and looks away.

"You're really pushing your luck today, Giyuu."

He crosses his arms defensively, but his posture has softened slightly. Giyuu smirks slightly.

"I'm just being honest. It's what friends do."

He takes another sip of his punch, watching Sanemi's internal struggle play out on his face. Sanemi turns back to Giyuu with a raised eyebrow.

"Since when are we friends?"

Despite his harsh words, there's a hint of playfulness in his tone.
