The old repairman carried the A-frame ladder inside, set it up beneath the air conditioner, and climbed up. After a quick inspection, he let out an "Oh," and said, "This old unit's out of refrigerant. That's why it's not cooling. Just needs a refill."
Both Otis and Mei nodded.
The old man glanced down at them and asked casually, as if making small talk, "You two dating? Why not sleep in the same room? Saves on electricity."
Their faces instantly stiffened with embarrassment.
Not only sleeping in the same room… but the kissing, and the hugging…
And worst of all, if they were a new couple it would still be fine—but these two were exes.
Kissing your ex was the kind of thing people laughed at until they dropped dead.
Their reactions were identical: frantic hand-waving.
"No no no, you've got it wrong, no, absolutely not! We're just roommates!"
The old man let out a long "Ohhhh," clearly misunderstanding in a completely different direction.
