The light in the moving car was dim as Ruby stared at the empty streets beyond the tinted window, her son's previous broken sobs echoing in her mind.
"Mommy… Danny just wants Mummy to be happy."
"Danny wants to protect Mummy whenever Mummy's scared."
"Danny doesn't want to be a burden… Danny wants to be Mummy's hero."
Ruby's heart clenched. She lowered her gaze to the boy sleeping on her lap, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
She was truly an incompetent mother.
She had initially thought that she was the only one who best understood her son and yet, she didn't even know a thing about the worries weighing him all this time.
"Mommy could've had a better life if Danny were to be a bit healthier."
His words struck right through her chest. Ruby couldn't deny the guilt in herself.
If it's not because of her negligence and irresoluteness back then, she wouldn't have accidentally hurt the baby in her womb.
