Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: The Dual Offensive - Part 2

In the waking world, Kenji and the Spiritual Assassins felt it. A subtle tremor in the Ki, an almost imperceptible strengthening of the currents that signaled the success of the Guardians' dream assault.

It was their turn.

Without a sound, they dispersed from the encampment. Their techniques—silent and lethal—were unleashed against the Silents that the Ash had deployed in an attempt to further poison life in the village, making the Ki more stagnant.

Ronin Kenji moved like a breath of wind through a moonlit clearing.

Three Silents—spectral figures made of dense smoke and sharpened limbs—closed in around him. The first lunged, a claw hissing through the air to tear him apart. Kenji was not where the Silent expected him to be. With a sudden acceleration granted by the Ki of the Void, he seemed to dissolve and reappear behind it.

The Silent turned, but it was too slow.

Kenji did not use his blade. Instead, his hands moved in a flurry of strikes. Each impact of the Touch of the Void was invisible, devoid of physical force, yet a pure discharge of concentrated Ki that pierced the Silent's ethereal form, destabilizing its essence.

The Silent shuddered, its shape twisting, and a spiral of dark, toxic smoke rose from it.

The other two Silents reacted—one hurling a barrage of shadow spikes, solid projectiles of darkness slicing through the air, the other attempting to envelop him in a poisonous shadow cloak that drained life force.

Kenji did not dodge.

He took a sideways step, and the poisonous shadow cloak passed through him without effect: his Void Ki had created a bubble of non-existence, a breach in the fabric of Ki itself that nullified the corruption.

The shadow spikes dissolved into nothing the moment they entered his field of influence.

Then, in a flash, Kenji surged forward, one hand outstretched. His hand passed through the chest of the second Silent with the Eclipse of the Heart.

There was no blood.

The Silent froze, as if its heart of corruption had been momentarily suppressed by the void. Its form twisted in a silent scream as it disintegrated, leaving behind only a lingering stench.

The third Silent, sensing the fate of its companions, attempted to flee with a Shadow Escape, transforming into a streak of smoke slithering into the ground. Kenji allowed himself a faint smile.

He extended one hand.

The smoke halted, then was violently dragged back by the Pull of Nothingness. Condensing once more into its form, the Silent struggled to break free, but it was paralyzed.

Kenji finished it with a swift touch, purifying the area and leaving the air clear.

Master Hana, agile as the wind, faced a group of five Silents near a stream.

The Silents were denser here, perhaps nourished by the vital flow of the water's Ki. They moved with ferocity, attempting to overwhelm her with their Shadow Mass, a wave of dark energy meant to suffocate and weaken.

Hana danced.

Each step was a burst of Air Ki, making her incredibly fast and light. The shadow mass passed through her without striking—as if she were nothing but a current of air. What it hit instead was a residual afterimage of Hana, who had already moved.

Two Silents lunged simultaneously, their arms merging into Twin Blades of Shadow. Hana did not block. She spun with astonishing grace, evading them by mere centimeters, and the Twin Blades collided with each other, shattering into shards of black smoke.

While the Silents were disoriented, Hana struck.

Her hands cut through the air with the Blade of the Cutting Wind—not with physical force, but with the precision of Air Ki—creating fissures in their shadowy shells. From those cuts, a Purifying Gust of Air Ki blew away the internal corruption.

The Silents dissolved with sharp hisses, their forms turning to vapor.

Another Silent attempted to surprise her with a Shadow Ambush, materializing from a nearby tree. Hana sensed it. Without turning, she released a quick Sonic Breath Wave, a compressed discharge of Air Ki that struck it head-on—a scream of Ki that made it stagger, dispersing its form for an instant.

Hana was upon it before it could reform, and with a Silent Air Punch, she annihilated it.

In the heart of the forest, where the Ki of Earth was thickest, Master Jiro—with his imposing build and rock-like calm—and the elderly Master Isao, whose inner energy pulsed like a brazier, found themselves surrounded by fifteen Silents. It was a frontal clash, a test of raw power against overwhelming numbers.

The Silents advanced in a wave.

Some tried to ensnare Jiro with Shadow Tentacles erupting from the ground, while others hurled Corrupting Orbs—bubbles of stagnant energy that exploded in a nauseating miasma. Jiro planted himself firmly, legs spread apart. He extended his Ki into the ground like the roots of a tree, becoming immovable.

His hands rose, and the earth itself resonated with his Earth Ki. An Impenetrable Stone Wall surged up from the ground—thick and solid—blocking the wave of Corrupting Orbs.

The Shadow Tentacles smashed against it without effect.

As the Silents tried to move around the wall, Isao sprang into action. His age vanished in the lightning speed of Fire Ki. His hands were wreathed in orange and scarlet flames.

Each Burning Fist strike from Isao slammed into the mass of Silents attempting to pass, detonating them in explosions that instantly disintegrated their unstable forms. One Silent tried to ambush him from the side with a Shadow Discharge, but Jiro, without moving from his wall, extended an arm.

A sharp shard of rock shot from the ground—the technique known as the Rock Spike—and pierced the Silent, pinning it to the wall.

As Isao swept away more Silents with a Purifying Flame Wave that made them scream without sound and reduced them to ash—a veritable human flamethrower—Jiro created a Seismic Pit beneath a group of Silents. The ground split open, swallowing them into a dark abyss and purifying them as the walls closed once more.

A trio of Silents attempted a coordinated attack, merging their shadows into a massive Shadow Mace that crashed down toward Isao. But Jiro was ready.

"KIAIIII!" With a roar, he slammed his fists into the ground.

A column of earth and stone erupted between Isao and the Shadow Mace—the Regenerative Earth Spine—not only blocking the blow but resonating with pure Ki, dispersing the enemy weapon.

Isao seized the moment, using the smooth side of the Regenerative Earth Spine as a springboard. He leapt across the battlefield, towering over the Silents like an eagle poised to strike its prey, and unleashed a Rain of Burning Ash upon them. Wrapped in flames, they writhed and were reduced to dust in seconds.

The remaining Silents, seeing the determination and coordinated power of the two Masters, hesitated.

Isao gave them no respite, his flames dancing around him.

Jiro stomped a foot into the ground. The earth itself responded with the Earth's Grasp, imprisoning the last Silents in an unbreakable hold. Isao approached and, with an icy smile, finished the job with a series of flaming punches, purifying the area.

With all the Silents eliminated, the two Masters turned toward each other, confirming that every enemy had fallen. The earth returned to its natural state; the flames vanished. They looked at one another and both raised their right hands in the form of the Tiger Palm, slowly pushing it forward with only the index finger pointing upward—a gesture of respectful acknowledgment for achieving their objective.

Their actions, combined with those of the other Spiritual Assassins, were decisive.

Each Silent destroyed was one less point of corruption that the Ash had to restore, a further drain on its already divided resources.

The growing frustration of the Whisperer was palpable.

Each time it tried to focus its energies on poisoning life so that the Ki would become more stagnant, a new attack—both dream-bound and physical—forced it to divert its attention.

The Ash found itself trapped in a vise.

Its expansion slowed, forced onto the defensive. The Dark Guardians, already delayed by the initial diversion, were further weakened and slowed, unable to maintain their previous pace of action.

This gave the remaining Guardians time to create sub-dream corridors—small deviations and shortcuts that acted like true "wormholes" within the Dream Realm. These not only made the Guardians' movements more efficient, but also served as additional points of Ki rebirth…

…irritating the Ash even further.
