Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Two Families' Protection

"Chairman Sakayanagi, please tell me."

In the teachers' break room, Chie Hoshinomiya, who had received a call from Chairman Sakayanagi, stood by the window. Her face was serious as she listened to the orders.

Soon after the text message was sent, Chairman Sakayanagi called. Hoshinomiya, who knew the entire scheme, pretended to be clueless.

Yes, yes, okay, I understand.

Hoshinomiya used the classic three-word response perfectly. Should I be a traitor?

Ren and Kōenji were sitting right behind her; she couldn't betray them even if she wanted to. Besides, she was a participant and held a twenty percent share.

The profit... it was simply too high.

A wise man once said: If there is fifty percent profit, he will take a risk. If there is one hundred percent profit, he will trample all laws. If there is three hundred percent profit, he will challenge anyone, even risking hanging.

What Ren was offering her was a massive profit.

Since Ren hadn't even included her name as an organizer, she was completely removed from the chaos.

A warrior dies for his true friend! Little Katsuragi, my life is in your hands.

Hoshinomiya hung up the phone and turned to Ren. "Katsuragi-kun, Chairman Sakayanagi wants to see you."

Rokusuke Kōenji also received a text from his homeroom teacher.

Sae Chabashira: Chairman Sakayanagi wants you to go to the Chairman's office.

"Dragon, what's the plan?" Kōenji asked, waving his phone.

Ren glanced lightly at the little lion. He turned to Hoshinomiya. "Hoshinomiya-sensei, would you mind leading the way?"

...

Knock, knock, knock...

Leading Ren and Kōenji to the Chairman's office, Hoshinomiya knocked politely. "Chairman Sakayanagi, Katsuragi-kun and Kōenji-kun are here."

"Please come in," Chairman Sakayanagi's voice called from inside.

Hoshinomiya pushed the door open. After they entered, she noticed the Chairman's expression and politely backed out, closing the door softly.

"Good afternoon, Chairman Sakayanagi," Ren said. He placed his right hand on his chest and bowed politely.

Kōenji didn't bother with all the manners. He just stood next to Ren, looking around the office with an amused expression.

Chairman Sakayanagi looked up, his eyes showing a complex emotion. "Katsuragi-kun, Kōenji-kun, do you know why I called you here today?"

Ren knew the reason but pretended not to. He shook his head. Kōenji shrugged, also feigning ignorance.

"The text message... the website... the transfer." Chairman Sakayanagi tapped his desk, reminding the two boys who were playing dumb.

"Oh, that. Chairman Sakayanagi, don't worry. We won't go bankrupt," Ren joked, acting as if he suddenly understood.

"..." Chairman Sakayanagi laughed angrily. Worry? Bankrupt? As if he worried about these two rascals! They're still pretending.

"Katsuragi-kun, my point is... what you're doing is gambling, at best. At worst, it's illegal fundraising."

This was the high-level tactic: exaggerate the seriousness of the issue. The worse the crime, the more grateful they would be when he fixed it.

"That's incorrect, Chairman Sakayanagi. This isn't illegal fundraising."

"We're not charging any fees. We're working hard to provide a free transfer service for the students."

"If anything, this is a charity event." Ren wouldn't fall for that trick. He had read the law. How could he make such a mistake?

The Chairman's tapping finger froze mid-air. His mouth twitched.

Charity event... Katsuragi Ren actually dared to call it that.

Anyone with sense could see that the most important part of the website was the three options after the prize drawing. No one would be stupid enough to pick the first option (transfer to Class A).

The second option (job guarantee) was purely capitalistic, especially in Japan, where jobs were hard to fill. It meant people were paying money to work for the conglomerate.

The third option was the simplest: buying points with yen. This was technically against school rules, but by "washing" it through the website, it became legal.

No matter if the winner chose the second or third option, the 20 million points meant for the transfer fee would end up in the pockets of Ren and Kōenji.

"A clever overture," Chairman Sakayanagi said, realizing he couldn't treat them like normal students. He decided to be honest.

"Overture? I don't understand. I'm just running a charity event." Ren insisted on playing dumb.

He nudged Kōenji with his elbow, signaling him to say something. The guy's a Chairman; at least show some respect.

Kōenji, who hadn't wanted to talk, realized this was his golden goose for the next three years. He agreed: "Yes, we're running a charity event."

Chairman Sakayanagi rubbed his aching forehead. He was annoyed. If they were normal students, he could just warn them, shut down the site, and the problem would be solved.

But he was facing the heirs of two major conglomerates. He couldn't touch either of them. If it was only one, he could go to the other conglomerate and complain about poaching. But now, both were poaching...

Who would he complain to? If he tried to stop them, every other conglomerate would start stealing students early, and the school would collapse before graduation.

"Yes, yes, a charity event. You two may go," Chairman Sakayanagi said, wanting to be alone.

"Alright, Chairman."

...

As soon as Ren and Kōenji left, the phone on the Chairman's desk rang.

"Moshi Moshi, is this Chairman Sakayanagi?"

"It is. And you are?"

"Katsuragi Family Head."

Chairman Sakayanagi felt a growing sense of dread. Katsuragi Retsu didn't waste time. "Chairman Sakayanagi, I hear your daughter is a freshman here. They're just kids. Let them play."

He had barely hung up when the phone rang again.

"Chairman Sakayanagi?"

"It is. And you are?"

"Kōenji Family Head."

Chairman Sakayanagi felt exhausted. Please, no more!

"Kōenji Family Head..."

Before he could finish, the Kōenji Head interrupted: "I hear your daughter is also a freshman. My son is, too. Let them play."

Putting down the phone, Chairman Sakayanagi looked grim as he processed the two calls.

The summary was clear: Don't interfere with the children's games. If you have a problem, let your daughter challenge my son. If you want to get involved, we don't mind playing with you.
