Chapter 5 - The humanity nearly collapsed!

"What do you mean?" Rover frowned and asked.

Selvia lifted a shoulder, then took out a check and placed it on the table.

"Although I don't know why you're stockpiling that much food, if you need money, I can lend it to you."

Hearing that, Rover stared at Selvia for a long moment. Then he said, "Twenty million, no, thirty million... can you lend me thirty million?"

Selvia didn't reply with words. She simply picked up a pen, wrote the number '30,000,000 credit points' on the check, signed it, and handed it to Rover.

"Just go to the bank and withdraw it. No additional procedures needed."

Hearing her say that, and seeing the check lying before him, he felt as if he were dreaming.

He didn't immediately reach for it. Instead, he frowned and asked, "You trust me this much?"

Selvia tilted her head and answered casually: "That's right. I trust my best employee not to deceive me."

She placed the check on the table and pushed it toward him: "Don't worry, I won't charge interest. If it's not enough, come find me again."

She slipped the pen back into the pocket over her chest, her movements elegant and refined like those of a gentleman.

Rover frowned, picked up the check, and examined it carefully. As her employee, he had seen her checks many times. One glance was enough for him to know this one was real.

"Withdrawing such a large amount... will it affect the company?"

Selvia shook her head: "That's my personal money. It has nothing to do with the company."

Rover stared at her, trying to determine whether she was lying or telling the truth.

Holding the check in his hand, his thoughts drifted back to his previous life.

Before the internet collapsed, he had often received messages from Selvia.

Many times, she had offered to bring him food and supplies, but he rejected her every time.

Why?

Because monsters and the black fog had already taken over everything. Even a tiny mouse had mutated into a terrifying beast whose teeth could bite through steel wire.

He didn't want her to risk her life.

And at the time, he believed she only made such an offer because she was simply a kind person, someone who treated everyone the same.

But in the end, Selvia had somehow arrived with the military at the place where he lived.

She was afraid he would be robbed, so she secretly brought him a large amount of supplies, then hurried away with the troops, as if she were preparing for a battle.

Because of that, Karen became greedy and, along with others, tricked him, and then...

Rover took a deep breath, refusing to revisit the memories of his past life.

Even so, he remembered clearly that Selvia had helped him.

In the apocalypse, even the smallest kindness was enough to warm his heart.

After thinking for a moment, he spoke in a half-joking tone:

"Director, do you think one day this world will fall into chaos?"

"Chaos?" Selvia frowned. Though Rover sounded like he was joking, she seriously considered it: "Very possible."

"No, I mean... an apocalypse." Rover smiled. "Monsters, zombies, people awakening superpowers... like in the movies."

Selvia looked at him and nodded.

"That's also possible. After all, we can't predict what will happen tomorrow."

Rover: "..."

He stared at her, bewildered that she actually believed his words, and even pondered them seriously.

'She really took that seriously? She's even thinking it over...' he thought.

He looked at the check again, remembering how in his previous life Selvia had tried to send him supplies again and again.

Even though he knew she had survived after his death, still...

Rover exhaled softly and said, "Director, you should stockpile as many supplies as you can. Especially food and drinking water."

Selvia heard that and glanced at Rover for a moment, asking nothing more.

The meal between them was nothing special. Occasionally, they exchanged a few work-related words, then continued eating in silence.

After dinner, Selvia drove him back home.

He stood at the door, waving goodbye to her, but when he saw her still standing beside the Maybach without any intention of leaving, he felt confused.

"Director, aren't you going home?"

"Go inside first. Once I see you enter safely, I'll leave."

Hearing that, Rover sighed. He felt as if their roles had been reversed, like he was the girl and she was the man.

He didn't think too much about it. He opened the door to his house, then suddenly remembered something. Turning around, he frowned and asked, "Director, do you know Kaito?"

"Kaito?" At the mention of that name, a cold and irritated look flashed through Selvia's eyes, but she quickly composed herself and said softly, "He is my fiancé, but I rejected the family-arranged engagement. How do you know him?"

Rover shrugged. "Be careful of him. He's not a good person."

Selvia was startled by that, but Rover didn't explain further. He immediately stepped inside and carefully locked the door.

It was a habit he had developed after the apocalypse began. Before the end times, security here was excellent. Sometimes he didn't even lock the door at night and nothing happened.

But after the apocalypse arrived, if someone smelled food coming from your home, hunger would turn them into terrifying monsters.

Rover sighed, took a shower, then lay on the bed. His mental and physical exhaustion had reached the limit.

Not only was he exhausted from shopping, he had also spent his mental energy storing everything inside his Storage Space.

He glanced at the 30 million credit point check on the table, emotions swirling chaotically inside him.

"Alright, stop thinking." Rover mumbled. "First, I need to survive."

He pushed away all messy thoughts and slowly drifted into sleep.

...

In a simple yet luxurious bedroom.

Selvia wore a white robe, her figure unbelievably seductive.

Her 185-centimeter height, her long sculpted legs—everything looked as if carved from perfect proportions.

She sat by the window, gazing into the distance, a slim lady's cigarette in hand.

"The apocalypse..." Selvia murmured.

After thinking for a moment, she took out her phone and called her assistant. A feminine voice came through the other end.

"Director?! It's this late and you're still awake?"

"Uhm." Selvia responded coldly. "Tomorrow, contact the food company and tell them we want to place a large order."

"Food company?" The assistant asked, confused.

"Yes. I need as much food as possible, drinking water, and household supplies."

"Wait! Hold on! Director, what are you planning? The company won't pay for such purchases."

"Don't worry. It will be my personal money." Selvia said.

"Good!" The assistant sighed in relief, then asked, "Then... may I know why you need so much food? Charity? Supporting disaster-stricken areas?"

"No." Selvia replied, her tone calm to an unbelievable degree. "Preparing for the apocalypse."

"What?!!!"

...

In the morning, Rover slept until 9 a.m. before waking up.

It was the best sleep he had gotten since the apocalypse began.

After washing up, he started thinking about what he needed to buy today, then suddenly remembered the post he had made yesterday.

With anticipation in his heart, he turned on his phone and opened yesterday's post.

[+822]

The notification showed 822 replies. Rover smiled and muttered, "Hopefully I can find something useful in these answers."

...

[XXO]: The OP already has a good framework, but aside from food and water, I can't think of anything else that's better.

[OOO]: Same here. Or maybe the OP can buy some solar panels.

[XXX]: Are the people above stupid? The author already said the sky is covered in black clouds and fog. Solar panels are useless. Even generators are no good—the noise will attract monsters and zombies.

[OOX]: Then what should we do? Stockpile weapons like guns?

[XXX]: Another idiot. The author clearly said the MC reincarnates 10 days before the apocalypse. That's still a peaceful period. Laws and police are active. How are you going to get guns?

[OXO]: Then aside from normal supplies, what else can we even do?

...

Rover scrolled through the comments, feeling somewhat disappointed.

He had hoped someone might give him useful ideas or information. But in the end, they thought no differently than he did.

Suddenly, he found a comment with over 400 likes and immediately tapped on it.

...

[FNC Driver]: I think you should first find a safe shelter. And of course, you should tell no one about it except your parents or your wife and children.

[OOO]: Why? In the apocalypse, shouldn't we help each other and stay united?

[XXO]: Exactly. You can't just be selfish and think only of yourself. What about the people out there?

[OOX]: I agree. During the apocalypse, people need to unite, share resources, work together. We are humans, not animals.

[FNC Driver]: You all speak wonderfully, like each one of you here is a hero, a savior. But... do any of you know about the blackout in New York City in 1977?

Even when the police were still active, and the government system was still intact, within just 4 hours of the blackout, humanity nearly collapsed.
