Chapter 23: USJ Attack - Part 1

POV: Nova Asahi

The bus ride to USJ felt like traveling toward execution disguised as education. Nova's classmates chattered with excitement that made his enhanced hearing ring like cathedral bells—conversations about rescue techniques, speculation about training scenarios, anticipation of working alongside professional heroes. Normal teenage enthusiasm about extraordinary opportunities.

"They have no idea. In thirty minutes, they're going to learn that heroes can die screaming and that villains don't care about age, experience, or innocent intentions."

Nova's Enhanced Danger Sense hummed with low-level warning signals that made his skin crawl despite the bus's comfortable temperature. Every few minutes, the sensation spiked toward active alarm before fading back to background anxiety, like radar detecting movement at the edge of its range.

"They're coming. The League is moving into position while we ride toward them like lambs heading to slaughter."

Momo sat beside him, her presence both comforting and terrifying. She'd noticed his tension immediately—the way his hands kept checking hidden pockets in his costume, the rigid posture that spoke of muscles coiled for violence, the thousand-yard stare of someone seeing futures others couldn't imagine.

"Nova," she said quietly, her voice barely audible over Kaminari's terrible jokes and Mineta's even worse commentary. "Whatever's coming, we'll handle it together."

Her hand found his beneath their shared armrest, warm fingers intertwining with his in a gesture that should have been reassuring. Instead, it felt like holding hands with someone walking toward a cliff.

"Together. If only she knew that 'together' means watching her face villains who see teenage heroes as obstacles to be eliminated rather than people to be protected."

"Together," Nova agreed, squeezing her hand while his free fingers verified the location of his emergency consumables. HP Potions in his left hip pocket, MP restoration in his right shoulder compartment, stamina boosters distributed across his utility belt. Everything he'd need to keep people alive when the world decided to end.

USJ rose before them like a monument to impossible optimism—a training facility designed to simulate every disaster scenario except the one that mattered most: what happened when the disasters came looking for you.

The entrance hall sparkled with morning sunlight streaming through massive windows, creating the illusion of safety that made Nova's paranoia feel almost foolish. Thirteen stood at the center of the space like a reassuring presence, the rescue hero's distinctive costume design immediately familiar from countless animated scenes.

"Thirteen. The hero who'll try to save everyone and nearly die doing it. If I can keep them alive, if I can just prevent the worst outcomes..."

"Welcome to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint!" Thirteen's voice carried the particular enthusiasm that came from genuine love of teaching. "Today, we'll be conducting rescue training across multiple disaster zones designed to test your emergency response capabilities!"

Class 1-A gathered around their instructor with varying degrees of excitement and nervousness. Iida stood at attention like he was receiving military briefing. Uraraka bounced on her toes with barely contained energy. Bakugo radiated the competitive fury that made him legendary among their classmates.

Nova positioned himself with calculated casualness near the group's center, where he could reach the maximum number of people if—when—everything went wrong. His Enhanced Danger Sense painted the facility's layout in layers of threat assessment, identifying exit routes and defensive positions with tactical precision that felt like preparation for siege warfare.

"Landslide Zone, Conflagration Zone, Flood Zone, Central Plaza. I know where everyone gets scattered, what villains wait in each area, how many seconds until professional heroes start falling to enemies who shouldn't exist."

"As you can see," Thirteen continued, gesturing toward the facility's various training environments, "we have zones designed to simulate the full spectrum of emergency scenarios. Today's exercise will test your ability to save lives under pressure, coordinate rescue efforts with teammates, and—"

Nova's Enhanced Danger Sense exploded with hostile intent so overwhelming it felt like standing in a nuclear reactor during meltdown. Every alarm in his nervous system screamed warnings about imminent violence, malicious planning, and overwhelming threat levels converging on their location.

"VILLAINS!" Nova's voice cut across Thirteen's explanation with the force of emergency broadcast. "EVERYONE GET BACK! NOW!"

His warning came exactly one second before reality shattered.

Kurogiri's warp gate materialized at the plaza's center like a tear in the fabric of space itself, purple mist swirling with unnatural patterns that hurt to look at directly. The portal expanded with mechanical precision, revealing glimpses of the bar that served as headquarters for Japan's most dangerous villains.

"Zero point eight seconds earlier than canonical timeline. My presence accelerated their approach or they anticipated resistance. Either way, people are about to die unless I can change what happens next."

Nova's warning had given his classmates crucial milliseconds to process the impossible situation. Aizawa's capture weapon activated before Shigaraki fully emerged from the portal, the teacher's battle instincts recognizing lethal threat faster than conscious thought. Thirteen began herding students toward the exit with the efficiency of someone whose quirk could accidentally create black holes.

Iida positioned himself for a sprint that could bring professional heroes in minutes instead of hours.

"Hmm," Shigaraki's voice carried petulant irritation as he scratched at his neck with fingernails that could disintegrate whatever they touched. "One of them sensed us coming. That's new. Usually we get better surprise."

"He knows. Shigaraki knows someone detected their approach before it should have been possible. But he doesn't know who or how, which means I still have advantages he can't counter."

Villains poured through Kurogiri's portal like a flood of malicious intent given human form. Dozens of criminals who'd been promised the chance to kill the Symbol of Peace, each one desperate enough to attack a hero school filled with professional staff and combat-trained students.

"Sixty-three villains total, canonical count. But their positioning is different—they're more spread out, taking defensive formations instead of immediately charging. My warning changed their tactical approach."

Aizawa didn't hesitate.

The underground hero charged into the villain horde with his capture weapon flowing around him like liquid lightning, each movement optimized for maximum efficiency and minimum waste. His Erasure quirk targeted enemies before they could activate their abilities, turning superpowered criminals into ordinary people facing someone who'd spent years learning how to fight impossible odds.

"Four minutes. That's how long Aizawa can last against this many enemies before the Nomu engages. Four minutes to evacuate students, call for backup, and prevent the massacre from becoming a slaughter."

Nova watched his teacher fight with professional appreciation and growing horror. Aizawa moved like water around stone, flowing between attacks that should have been lethal while his capture weapon bound enemies faster than they could coordinate responses. Each villain he disabled was one less threat to Nova's classmates.

But Nova's Combat Precognition painted the engagement's inevitable conclusion with mathematical certainty. Too many enemies. Too much ground to cover. And something standing in the portal's shadows that radiated threat levels his Enhanced Danger Sense could barely process without overloading.

The Nomu.

"Shock Absorption, Regeneration, Enhanced Strength. Designed specifically to kill All Might, capable of destroying everyone else as collateral damage. When that thing moves, people die."

"We can't have you leaving before we've killed All Might," Kurogiri's voice boomed across the facility with otherworldly resonance. The mist villain's massive form expanded to block the exit, dark energy crackling with the promise of spatial displacement.

Thirteen's Black Hole quirk activated automatically, trying to contain the warp gate before it could scatter the students across hostile territory. But Kurogiri had prepared for this exact scenario, his understanding of spatial mechanics letting him redirect the vacuum effect toward empty air.

"HOLD ON TO EACH OTHER!" Nova screamed, grabbing Momo's hand while reaching for Kirishima with his free arm. "DON'T GET SEPARATED!"

Darkness swallowed Class 1-A like a living thing, spatial distortion turning the world into chaos where up and down became suggestions rather than rules. Nova activated Steel Skin anticipating violent landing while his enhanced senses tracked his teammates' positions through the dimensional storm.

"Landslide Zone. Momo, Kirishima, Kaminari with me. Exactly as predicted, but that doesn't make this any less terrifying."

They hit artificial rubble with bone-jarring impact that would have crippled normal teenagers. Nova's Steel Skin absorbed most of the collision force while positioning himself to shield Momo from debris that rained around their crash site. Kirishima's Hardening quirk turned him into a human shield for Kaminari, who sparked with nervous electricity as he processed their situation.

Twelve villains surrounded them with weapons drawn and malicious intent radiating from every gesture. Professional criminals who'd been promised the chance to kill future heroes, each one desperate enough to attack children who'd never done anything worse than want to save people.

"Three minutes forty-five seconds until Aizawa falls. Twelve enemies between us and the Central Plaza. My friends are scared but alive, and I have just enough power to change everything if I don't waste time being afraid."

Nova's Enhanced Danger Sense painted target priorities across his enhanced vision while Combat Precognition showed him attack patterns two seconds before they manifested. His teammates looked to him for leadership, and Nova realized this was the moment he'd been training for since awakening in this impossible world.

Time to prove that borrowed power could create genuine heroism.

"Listen carefully," Nova said, his voice carrying deadly calm that made even hardened criminals hesitate. "You have one chance to surrender before we demonstrate why UA students are considered the future of hero society."

The villains' laughter was sharp with desperate bravado. "Future corpses is more like it!"

Nova smiled and activated his Crisis Response loadout, feeling system abilities flood his nervous system with power that belonged to legends.

The real fight was about to begin.
