Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Day Before

Chapter 22: The Day Before

POV: Nova Asahi

The evening before the USJ trip, Class 1-A's common room buzzed with excitement that felt like watching children play in a minefield. Nova forced himself to smile at conversations about tomorrow's rescue training while his Enhanced Danger Sense painted the dormitory in layers of false security.

"They have no idea. They're excited about learning to save people, and tomorrow they're going to find out what it feels like to need saving themselves."

"PRE-FIELD-TRIP PARTY!" Mina announced with enthusiasm that could power small cities, her arms loaded with snacks that probably violated several nutritional guidelines. "Because tomorrow we become official rescue heroes!"

The impromptu celebration materialized around her declaration like matter condensing from pure excitement. Gaming controllers appeared, card tables emerged from storage closets, and somehow Sato produced enough baked goods to feed a small army. Within minutes, the common room transformed into controlled chaos that felt wonderfully, impossibly normal.

"This is what I'm fighting to protect. Not just their lives, but their ability to be teenagers who get excited about field trips and argue over video game rules."

Nova found himself pulled into Mario Kart competitions where Kirishima's competitive spirit clashed spectacularly with his complete inability to navigate Rainbow Road. Kaminari's attempts at charades devolved into interpretive dance that bore no resemblance to the words he was supposed to convey. Tokoyami sat in the corner with Dark Shadow, both of them providing sardonic commentary on the proceedings with the deadpan delivery of professional critics.

"Kaminari is trying to act out 'refrigerator' and somehow it looks like he's having a seizure. How did we get into the hero course with these coordination skills?"

But it was watching his other classmates that made Nova's chest tight with protective anxiety. Izuku scribbled training notes while laughing at his friends' antics, nervous excitement radiating from his entire frame. Bakugo pretended complete disinterest while obviously listening to every conversation, his competitive instincts engaged despite his attempts at aloofness. Todoroki observed from the periphery with the careful attention of someone learning how friendship operated.

Momo sat nearby, elegant even while laughing at Kaminari's increasingly desperate charades performance, her analytical mind probably cataloging social dynamics for future reference. When she caught Nova staring, her smile carried warmth that made his enhanced reflexes stutter.

"I'm falling for her. Not strategically, not as part of some system optimization plan, but genuinely developing feelings that have nothing to do with tactical advantage and everything to do with how her intelligence lights up when she solves complex problems."

"You look sad," Mina observed, materializing beside him with the stealth capabilities that came from naturally pink skin in a world of impossible genetics. "Nervous about tomorrow?"

"Terrified about tomorrow. Sick with anxiety about watching people I care about face life-threatening situations I could prevent if I was willing to sound completely insane."

"Just nervous about performing well," Nova lied smoothly, the words feeling like ash in his mouth. "Want to make sure I don't embarrass myself during rescue training."

"Please," Mina waved dismissively, "you're like the tactical genius of our class. You'll probably figure out rescue techniques that haven't been invented yet."

"If only you knew that my tactical genius comes from watching all of this happen in animated form, and that my biggest fear is not being smart enough to change the ending."

The party continued around them, but Nova felt increasingly disconnected from the celebration—like watching home movies of people who didn't know they were about to disappear. His enhanced senses painted every laugh and smile in shades of impending loss.

Later that night, Nova found himself on the dormitory rooftop, drawn by insomnia and the need for space to process tomorrow's impossible mathematics. The city spread below him like a circuit board made of light, eight million people living their lives in blissful ignorance of the violence gathering in shadows.

"Twelve hours until the USJ trip. Twelve hours until everything changes for Class 1-A."

Footsteps on the roof access stairs announced company, and Nova's enhanced hearing identified Momo before she emerged into the night air. She moved with the quiet precision of someone who'd learned not to waste motion, settling beside him on the ledge with comfortable familiarity.

"Couldn't sleep either?" she asked, following his gaze toward the city lights that painted her features in soft gold.

"Too much nervous energy," Nova replied, which was true enough even if it omitted the relevant details about prescient knowledge and impending disaster.

They sat in comfortable silence for several minutes, watching traffic flow through streets like blood cells through arteries. Tokyo never truly slept—even at this hour, the city hummed with activity that spoke of human persistence in the face of whatever challenges tomorrow might bring.

"You're preparing for something terrible, aren't you?" Momo said finally, her voice carrying the careful precision of someone who'd spent considerable time analyzing available evidence. "I've watched you stockpiling supplies, optimizing equipment loadouts, training with an intensity that goes beyond normal preparation."

"She's figured it out. Not the specifics, but the general shape of what's coming. Genius intellect applied to behavioral pattern recognition."

Nova felt his carefully maintained facade cracking under the weight of secrets and impending violence. The urge to confess everything—the system, the meta-knowledge, the terrible certainty of tomorrow's attack—pressed against his throat like a physical force.

"I have strong instincts about danger," Nova said carefully, offering as much truth as he could manage without revealing impossible knowledge. "They've been screaming that something bad is coming. I need to be strong enough to protect everyone."

Momo turned to study his profile with eyes that missed nothing, her analytical mind processing microexpressions and involuntary tells that betrayed the depth of his anxiety.

"What kind of danger?" she asked softly. "If there's a specific threat to the class, to the school—"

"I can't explain without sounding paranoid or insane," Nova interrupted, desperation bleeding through his controlled tone. "But I know something terrible is going to happen, and I'm terrified that my preparations won't be enough to save the people who matter to me."

The confession hung between them like a bridge neither of them was sure was strong enough to cross. Momo's hand found his on the concrete ledge, her fingers warm against his skin.

"Whatever happens," she said with quiet conviction, "we'll face it together. You're not alone anymore, Nova. You have friends, allies, people who care about your safety as much as you care about theirs."

"Together. If only she knew that tomorrow will test whether 'together' is enough to survive the League of Villains' idea of a teaching demonstration."

"Thank you," Nova said, meaning it more than any words he'd ever spoken. "For trusting me despite all the things I can't explain. For being willing to stand beside someone who's clearly hiding more than he's sharing."

Momo's smile carried warmth that made his enhanced senses stutter with emotional feedback he couldn't quite process. "I trust your character, Nova. Your actions have consistently demonstrated heroic intentions, regardless of whatever secrets you're carrying. That's enough for me."

"I'm falling for her. Completely, helplessly falling for someone who deserves better than a relationship built on lies and borrowed power. But maybe, if we survive tomorrow, I can find a way to be worthy of that trust."

The moment stretched between them, charged with possibility and the weight of unspoken feelings that neither was quite ready to address directly. Nova felt like he was standing on the edge of something that could change everything—if they lived long enough to explore what it might become.

Unable to sleep despite exhaustion, Nova slipped out of the dormitory at midnight for one final patrol through the city that had become his home. His Enhanced Danger Sense painted familiar streets in shades of normalcy that felt like elaborate camouflage concealing predators.

"Last chance to gather intelligence. Last chance to detect advance surveillance or villain positioning before tomorrow's attack."

The patrol route took him through entertainment districts where his vigilante career had begun, past convenience stores he'd defended from armed robbery, around corners where he'd stopped crimes that would have shattered innocent lives. Ten months of heroic work compressed into memories that felt like someone else's biography.

But as Nova approached the industrial district where shipping containers created urban canyons perfect for concealment, his Enhanced Danger Sense exploded with warning signals that made his blood run cold.

Hostile intent. Multiple sources. Coordinated positioning that spoke of military precision applied to malicious objectives. The sensation painted his enhanced perception in layers of threat assessment that pointed toward UA like accusatory fingers.

"They're here. The League is already in position, conducting final reconnaissance before tomorrow's attack. This is happening. This is really happening."

Nova tried tracking the sensation's source, but the hostile presences faded like smoke the moment he focused attention on them—either moving beyond his detection range or concealing their intent through unknown methods. The entire encounter lasted less than thirty seconds before vanishing completely.

"Testing response times. Checking security patrol patterns. Making sure they understand UA's defensive capabilities before committing to their attack plan."

Nova sprinted back toward campus with his enhanced agility carrying him across rooftops and through alleys that couldn't possibly contain the anxiety clawing at his throat. He reached UA's gates in record time and immediately contacted the one person whose paranoia matched his own.

"Aizawa-sensei," Nova said when his teacher answered the phone with the exhausted acceptance of someone accustomed to emergency calls. "My danger sense just detected multiple hostile presences conducting reconnaissance near the industrial district. They were focused on UA, and they vanished when they realized I'd detected them."

Silence stretched across the connection while Aizawa processed implications that could range from student paranoia to legitimate security breach. When he spoke, his voice carried the deadly calm that had made him legendary among underground heroes.

"How certain are you about this assessment?"

"Certain enough to wake you up at 12:30 AM," Nova replied. "Professional-level surveillance and tactical positioning. Whatever they're planning involves our school specifically."

"Understood. I'll contact Principal Nezu immediately and coordinate with security for increased patrol coverage. Thank you for the warning, Nova. Your vigilance may have prevented a successful intelligence gathering operation."

The call ended with assurances that additional security measures would be implemented, but Nova felt no relief as he returned to the dormitory. Tomorrow's attack was inevitable—the only question was whether his warnings had improved their chances of survival.

Nova lay in his narrow dorm bed at 3 AM, staring at the ceiling while mentally rehearsing every detail of the canonical USJ attack. Shigaraki's objectives, Kurogiri's warp gate positioning, the Nomu's overwhelming combat capabilities—all balanced against the variables his presence had introduced.

"Additional security. All Might and Thirteen both attending. Increased vigilance from authority figures who trust my tactical instincts. It's not enough to prevent the attack, but it might be enough to minimize casualties."

Sleep came eventually, filled with dreams of smoke and lightning where faceless enemies moved with surgical precision toward objectives Nova couldn't reach in time to prevent. When morning arrived, he woke with the certainty that today would determine whether borrowed power could forge genuine heroism.

The day of reckoning had finally arrived.
