CHAPTER 27: THE LAST STAND
POV: Ivyn Mikaelson
Twenty-four hours to prevent catastrophe.
Miguel and I meet at dawn in an empty park. Planning the play that could save everything or destroy what's left.
"We force Kreese to show his true nature. Publicly. In a way even his supporters can't ignore."
Miguel's skeptical. "How? He's too smart to lose control."
"We don't need him to lose control. We need him to win." I pause. "Against me. In a way that proves what he actually is."
"That's suicide."
"That's strategy. He thinks I'm soft. Bronze medal. Johnny's pet student. If I challenge him directly, his ego won't let him refuse."
"And when he destroys you?"
"Then Johnny sees what I've been trying to tell him. The students see it. The mask comes off."
Miguel's jaw clenches. "There has to be another way."
"There isn't. Not in twenty-four hours. Not when he owns half the dojo and half the students."
We sit in silence. Birds chirping. Morning sun warming concrete.
"Okay," Miguel finally says. "But I'm there. Ready to step in if it goes too far."
"It will go too far. That's the point."
[HIGH-RISK STRATEGY: INITIATED]
[Probability of injury: 85%]
[Probability of success: 60%]
[Probability of catastrophic failure: 15%]
[WARNING: Physical consequences likely severe]
During evening class, I wait for the right moment. Kreese demonstrating a strike technique to newer students. Johnny watching from the side. Defeated. Exhausted.
I step forward. Voice loud. Clear.
"Your methods create bullies, not martial artists. You're teaching us to be what we swore we'd never become."
The dojo goes silent. Every student turning. Kreese's smile dangerous. Predatory.
"That sounds like a challenge. Want to test my methods against yours?"
"Yes, Sensei."
Johnny steps forward. "Ivyn, you don't—"
"I do." I meet his eyes. Trying to convey trust. Understanding. "I need to."
Kreese strips to his gi. Seventy years old but moving like fifty. Military precision. Lethal efficiency.
We bow. The formality mocking.
"Ready?"
I nod.
He explodes forward. Speed that shouldn't exist in someone his age. Jab-cross combination that I barely block. Low kick that I check. Hook that clips my temple.
Stars. Ringing ears. World tilting.
"He's faster than I expected. Stronger. This might be worse than I planned."
I respond with Cobra Kai aggression. Forward pressure. Jab-jab-cross. He slips outside. Counter with elbow to my ribs. Breath explodes out.
[COMBAT ENGAGED: KREESE (MASTER-LEVEL)]
[Your Combat Rating: 58/100]
[His Combat Rating: 82/100]
[Probability of victory: 12%]
[Primary objective: Survive and expose]
I transition to Miyagi-Do defense. Circular blocks. Redirecting force rather than meeting it. His strikes find air where I was.
He notices. Interest flickering in his eyes.
"Hybrid style. Clever. Who taught you that?"
Can't answer. Too busy surviving.
He increases intensity. Combinations that flow like water. Each strike designed not just to score points but to hurt. To damage.
Roundhouse to my thigh. Dead leg. Balance compromised.
Cross that splits my eyebrow. Blood flows. Warm. Copper taste.
Spinning back fist that I see coming but can't avoid. Catches my jaw. World explodes in pain.
I'm on the mat. Don't remember falling.
"Stay down," Kreese says. Not advice. Command.
I stand. Legs shaking. Vision doubled.
"Just need to survive a little longer. Just need him to show who he really is."
He comes again. No mercy. No holding back.
I defend. Barely. Each block sending pain through arms. Each movement agony.
Then I see it. His next combination. The illegal strike at the end. Knee to a downed opponent's head.
I let him set it up. Take the body shots. Drop to one knee.
His knee comes up. Aimed at my temple. Designed to cause permanent damage.
Johnny intercepts. Catches Kreese's leg inches from my skull.
"That's enough! This is training, not combat!"
The dojo erupts. Students shouting. Confusion. Fear.
Kreese pulls free. No apology. No shame.
"That's the problem, Johnny. You think training and combat are different. They're not." He gestures at me. Bleeding. Hurt. "If we're not preparing these kids to destroy their enemies, we're wasting everyone's time."
The casual cruelty. The complete absence of boundaries. Finally registers.
Hawk's face uncertain. Tory steps back. Others murmuring.
Johnny's voice is quiet. But final.
"Get out. You're done here."
Kreese laughs. "I own half this dojo. You can't expel me."
"Watch me." Johnny straightens. Finding strength from somewhere. "I'll burn it down before I let you corrupt another generation."
The confrontation is public. Definitive. Students realizing they've witnessed something important.
Johnny choosing principle over convenience. Integrity over success.
[KREESE INFLUENCE: 70 → 45/100 (DRAMATIC DROP)]
[JOHNNY'S RESOLVE: 25 → 60/100 (RECOVERING)]
[MASK REMOVED: Students witnessing true nature]
Kreese collects his bag. Unhurried. Confident.
"This isn't over, Johnny. You'll come crawling back when you realize you need me."
"Never."
He leaves. Door closing with finality.
Johnny calls student meeting. Right there. Everyone sitting on mats. Blood still dripping from my eyebrow.
"Kreese is out. I don't care what it costs financially or legally. Anyone who wants to follow him can leave now—no hard feelings, but you're choosing your path."
The moment extends. Uncomfortable. Heavy.
Miguel steps forward first. "I'm with you, Sensei. The real you. Not whatever Kreese wanted you to be."
I stand. Despite injuries. Despite pain. "Same. Cobra Kai under your leadership means something. Under his, it's just cruelty with a uniform."
Aisha joins us. "I came here to be strong. Not cruel. I'm staying."
One by one, students declare. Slowly. Some reluctantly.
Hawk is last. Standing alone. Torn.
Finally, he steps toward Johnny. "Sensei... I'm sorry. I got lost. But I'm with you."
Only two students leave. Following Kreese out into the night.
The dojo breathes collectively. Relief. Release.
Johnny's eyes are wet. "Thank you. All of you. We're starting over. Doing this right."
[QUEST COMPLETE: PREVENT KREESE TAKEOVER]
[Status: SUCCESS]
[Kreese expelled from Cobra Kai]
[Johnny's Resolve restored: 70/100]
[Dojo unity: 65/100 (rebuilding)]
[COMBAT XP GAINED: +200]
[Achievement unlocked: DOJO DEFENDER]
[Injuries sustained: Moderate]
[Recovery time: 2-3 weeks]
Miguel drives me to urgent care. Stitches for the eyebrow. X-rays for the ribs. Nothing broken but everything bruised.
Sam meets us there. Face pale. Hands shaking.
"You're an idiot."
"I know."
"You could have been seriously hurt."
"I know."
"Was it worth it?"
I think about Johnny's face. The students choosing principle. The dojo saved.
"Completely. Some battles are worth bleeding for."
She kisses me carefully. Avoiding bruises. "You're brave and stupid in equal measure. Don't change."
That night, alone in my apartment, I assess the damage.
Split eyebrow. Bruised ribs. Dead leg. Concussion symptoms. Every movement agony.
But the dojo is saved. Kreese is gone. Johnny's soul is intact.
[VICTORY ACHIEVED]
[Cost: High]
[Status: Acceptable]
I complete my Daily Quest through sheer stubbornness. Fall asleep before finishing.
Wake to Johnny's text: "Thank you. You saved my dojo. I won't forget that."
Neither will I.
