Zack stopped, looking caught off guard, before giving a nod.
I leaned back in the swivel chair, twirling a pen through my fingers. "Do you have any clue that Caitlyn's been operating an illegal lending operation? A government official's wife secretly charging outrageous interest rates—do you understand what kind of criminal charges that carries?"
Homer jumped in, "Three years back, loan sharking became a felony.
"According to the statute, anyone lending money for profit without government authorization and repeatedly providing loans to civilians—destabilizing the financial sector—faces a minimum of three years behind bars if the situation is severe.
"When such illegal lending happens over ten times, the penalty escalates with every additional offense."
I gave a nod. "Zack, don't pretend you're clueless about this. You've pocketed plenty of that dirty money yourself, right?"
