The door swallowed all sound the moment it finished opening.
Beyond it stretched a throne room vast enough to hold a cathedral, ancient pillars rising into darkness overhead, the air itself pressing down with a weight that had nothing to do with stone. Azraeth stepped inside, and the silence followed him — not empty, not still, but *alive*, coiled tight around something at the chamber's far end that made every hair on his arms rise before he'd even seen it clearly.
At the end of the hall sat a throne carved from black rock, and upon it, slumped in what looked almost like rest, sat a goblin unlike any Azraeth had faced on the nine floors above.

Even asleep, the creature radiated something the smaller goblins never had — presence, not just size, though the size alone was staggering. Nearly three meters of dense, scarred muscle filled the throne, dark emerald skin rough as weathered stone, crossed with old wounds that had healed into ridges rather than scars. His neck was thick as a tree trunk, his face broken and rebuilt by decades of violence, a flattened nose and torn ears framing two chipped ivory tusks that curved past his jaw. A crude crown of black iron and monster bone sat crooked atop his skull, and heavy black armor reinforced with monster scale covered his frame — dented, gouged, scarred in a hundred places, but never once broken through. Both massive hands rested atop the pommel of a greatsword planted between his knees, a blade nearly as tall as a grown man, its edge chipped and permanently darkened with old blood.
For a long moment, nothing moved.
Then Gorthok's eyes opened.
Crimson, calm, and utterly unhurried, they settled on Azraeth with the unblinking patience of something that had never once needed to rush a fight. There was no rage in them. Only certainty — the quiet confidence of a king who had never lost.
The stone floor groaned as he rose, greatsword lifting from the ground as though it weighed nothing at all.
He didn't speak. He simply lunged.
---
Azraeth barely got his guard up before the blade arrived, and the impact alone nearly took his arm off at the shoulder, the shockwave of it cracking stone beneath his boots and hurling him backward across the chamber floor.
Green Colored Fire — Fire Booster
Flame roared around his feet and he twisted mid-flight, landing in a controlled roll rather than a crash, but Gorthok was already closing again, the greatsword carving a horizontal arc that would have cut him in half a half-second later. He threw himself flat, felt the wind of the blade pass close enough to stir his hair, and rolled clear as the sword buried itself in the stone floor beside him, sending fragments scattering like shrapnel.
Green Colored Fire — Fire Dash
Ember trails whipped behind him as he tore sideways just ahead of the next swing, the greatsword's follow-through shattering a pillar behind where he'd stood. Gorthok didn't pause to admire the wreckage. He came again immediately, impossibly fast for something so large, and Azraeth barely raised a defense before the flat of the blade caught his ribs and threw him skidding across the ruined floor.
Green Colored Fire — Fire Protection
The shield absorbed enough of the impact to keep his ribs intact, though the force still knocked the breath from his lungs entirely. He forced himself upright, Heat Sense screaming a warning a half-second before Gorthok's next strike arrived, and only Fire Sight's sharpened awareness let him read the angle in time to duck beneath a blow that would have taken his head clean off.
For a long, grinding stretch, Azraeth did nothing but survive — weaving, rolling, absorbing hits that landed anyway, Heat Thickness dulling what he couldn't avoid into bruises rather than broken bone. Every swing of that colossal sword shook the chamber like a falling tree, cracking stone pillars that had stood since before Valvyx had a name, and every one he escaped felt like borrowed time rather than skill. Gorthok didn't tire. He didn't slow to gauge his opponent or savor the exchange the way lesser enemies always did — he simply pressed forward, methodical and relentless, each strike carrying the casual certainty of something that had never once needed to work for a victory.
A backhand swing caught Azraeth across the shoulder before he could fully clear it, and even with Fire Protection's shield absorbing most of the force, the impact still hurled him into a pillar hard enough to crack the stone behind him. He slid to the floor, ears ringing, and forced himself upright before the follow-up strike could finish what the first had started.
He's not testing me, Azraeth thought, chest heaving. He's ending fights. Every single time.
---
Slowly, something in him settled.
He started counting the rhythm the way Vaelric had taught him years ago in Shadowfen's fog — the half-second Gorthok's shoulder dropped before every overhead strike, the way his weight always shifted onto his back foot before a horizontal sweep. Small things. Fixable things.
The next overhead swing came, and Azraeth didn't retreat. He read the drop in Gorthok's shoulder, sidestepped at the last possible instant, and answered before the blade finished burying itself in stone.
Green Colored Fire — Magma Vortex
A vortex of molten flame tore open beneath the Goblin King's planted feet, dragging at his enormous weight, and for the first time since the fight began, Gorthok staggered. Azraeth didn't waste the opening — he drove forward, flame trailing from every strike, poison-green fire biting into scarred flesh and lingering there long after his fists had moved on. The vortex's pull combined with the burning already spreading through the wound, and Gorthok roared, the first sound of real pain he'd made.
Azraeth fell back a step, breathing hard, a shallow gash along his forearm from a stray edge he hadn't fully avoided.
Green Colored Fire — Lava Heal
The wound sealed shut in an instant, and he re-engaged before Gorthok had finished recovering his footing.
---
The fight stretched longer now, and with every exchange, Azraeth's martial arts sharpened further — footwork cleaner, counters landing exactly where he intended rather than where luck placed them. He read the greatsword's arcs before they finished forming, weaving fire directly into his strikes without ever breaking the rhythm of the fight itself, driving Gorthok backward step by grinding step across a floor already cratered and scorched black. A feint low, a burning knee to the ribs, a pivot that carried him past the greatsword's reach entirely before Gorthok could reset his stance — each exchange bled into the next without a single wasted motion, the fight finally starting to look less like survival and more like something Azraeth was actually winning.
For the first time, Azraeth believed he might actually win this.
Then Gorthok's wounds began to close.
Not slowly. Not naturally. All at once, scarred flesh knitting shut in an instant, the poison-fire simply burning out with nothing left to consume, and when the Goblin King rose from a stance that should have finished him, his crimson eyes had changed — brighter, wilder, every motion suddenly faster than it had been moments before.
Rage.
The greatsword came at him with double the speed it had carried before, and Azraeth barely cleared it, the pillar behind him disintegrating entirely under the blow's overflow. Gorthok didn't slow after that single swing — he kept coming, relentless, faster and stronger than the fight's first minutes had ever suggested, and Azraeth found himself back on the defensive, the ground beneath him cratering with every strike he failed to fully avoid.
Green Colored Fire — Fire Protection
The shield held through three consecutive blows that would have shattered bone, buying him half a second to reset his footing. He didn't fight the renewed aggression head-on — he let it exhaust itself against his guard, patient the way Vaelric had always insisted, waiting for the half-second where even a berserker's rhythm had to breathe.
It came. Azraeth didn't hesitate.
Green Colored Fire — Magma Vortex
The vortex tore open again beneath Gorthok's charging weight, and this time, exhausted from Rage's own furious pace, the Goblin King couldn't recover his balance fast enough. He staggered, one knee driving into the scorched stone, greatsword dragging low — but Rage kept him conscious, kept him dangerous, and he swept the blade in a last, desperate arc even from his knees, forcing Azraeth to throw himself backward rather than press the advantage immediately.
Azraeth landed hard, putting distance between them, and gathered everything he had left into both palms.
Green Colored Fire — Sun Flare
A wide, scorching wave of thermal light tore across the throne room, catching Gorthok mid-rise and driving him back down into the stone, poison-fire spreading through the wound the vortex had already opened, burning deeper with every passing second rather than fading. The Goblin King roared through it, forcing himself upright one final time on sheer, furious will, greatsword raised for one last swing — and Azraeth closed the distance before it could fall, driving a burning fist through the opening the flare had carved into his guard, then another, then a final strike that drove flame straight through scarred flesh and didn't stop until something ancient inside the Goblin King's chest simply gave out.
Gorthok's body swayed. His crimson eyes dimmed, the fury draining out of them as quickly as it had arrived. And then, slowly, the colossal frame collapsed to the ruined stone floor, greatsword clattering from lifeless fingers.

Azraeth stood amid the wreckage, chest heaving, notifications still unfurling silently across his vision.
Then he looked down.
Gorthok's greatsword had never stopped. In the same instant the final blow had landed, the blade's follow-through had already found him, buried to the hilt through his chest, the Goblin King's dying strength driving it home even as his own life ended.
Azraeth stared at the steel piercing his own body, understanding arriving far too slowly to matter.
His legs gave way beneath him.
He collapsed onto the ruined stone floor, blood spreading dark and silent across the cracked ground beneath him.
