Chapter 9 - Blue Soulfire

Azraeth's eyes opened to a world gone dim and distant.

Dust drifted through what remained of the throne room's shattered light, embers dying slow along the cratered stone where his body had come to rest. His breath came shallow, wet, each inhale dragging fire through a chest that no longer felt entirely his own. Blurred edges crept into his vision, the ruined chamber swimming in and out of focus, the greatsword's blade rising above him still buried through flesh and bone, pinning him to the broken floor as surely as it had ended him a heartbeat before his own final strike landed.

His fingers trembled as he reached for the hilt. Even that small motion cost him more than it should have, muscles screaming refusal, his own heartbeat loud and uneven in his ears.

Not yet, he thought, vision swimming at the edges. Not like this.

The weapon was impossibly heavy — heavier than anything should be, heavier than the fight itself had felt in Gorthok's living hands. Azraeth's fingers closed weakly around cold iron, and the first attempt to shift it barely moved the blade at all, agony tearing fresh through the wound with even that small effort. He gritted his teeth, forced his other hand up to join the first, and pulled.

The blade refused to yield easily. Blood slicked his grip, his strength fading with every passing second, and still he pulled, dragging steel free by fractions of an inch, each one costing more than the last. Somewhere distant, a part of him understood exactly how close this was — how easily this single, agonizing effort could be the last thing he ever did.

I've died once already, he thought, jaw clenched against the pain. I refuse to let it be this easily, twice.

Inch by unbearable inch, steel dragged free of torn flesh, until finally, with a final wrenching effort that tore a ragged sound from his throat, the greatsword slid loose entirely and crashed to the stone beside him.

Blood poured freely now, warm and unrelenting, and for one long moment the world held perfectly still.

Then Azraeth raised a trembling hand to his own chest.

Blue Colored Fire — Lava Heal

Soulfire bloomed beneath his palm — not the gold of Yellow Fire, not the corrosive green of what had carried him this far, but something colder and vaster, blue flame that burned without consuming, cool as starlight and hot enough to mend what steel had broken. It sank into the wound without pain, without smoke, torn muscle knitting closed strand by strand, shattered rib reforming beneath a light that felt less like healing and more like something ancient remembering what his body was supposed to look like. Warmth spread outward from his chest into fingers gone cold, into a mind gone hazy, until the last of the darkness at the edges of his vision simply receded.

Azraeth rose to his feet, whole again, breathing steady.

He didn't look back at the throne room. He simply turned toward the deeper dark, and descended.

[Floor 11 — Crust]

Floor eleven's cavern felt different the instant he stepped into it — the air sharper, colder, carrying a restless energy the Goblin King's silence never had. Shapes moved in the deep tunnels almost immediately.

They poured from the tunnels in disciplined waves rather than a single mob, small and quick, striking in coordinated pairs that forced him to account for two angles at once. One darted low for his legs while a second came high for his throat, and Azraeth read both a half-second before either committed.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Cold-hot flame roared around his feet and he tore through the first wave before it finished forming, blue fire scorching a path that split ice-slick stone wherever it landed. A kobold lunged from his blind side; Fire Protection's shield turned the strike aside before it landed, the invisible barrier holding against claws that should have torn deep. He answered with a burning elbow that dropped one attacker instantly, then a pivot into the next, blue soulfire trailing every motion like a living thing that refused to be shaken loose.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Dash

Ember trails tore through the pack's center, scattering their formation entirely, and Azraeth pressed the chaos without mercy, martial strikes and flame blending into a single unbroken rhythm — parry, counter, burn, move, never lingering long enough for the pack to reform its coordination. When the last cluster tried to box him against the cavern wall, sensing an opening in his momentary stillness, he simply drove through them instead of around, blue fire scorching a path clean to the other side and leaving nothing standing behind him.

The floors that followed deepened into a single, escalating rhythm. Floor twelve's sixty-five kobolds fought with tighter coordination, testing his flanks the moment he committed to any single target, and Azraeth met them with cleaner economy, ending the battle faster than the one before despite the greater numbers. Floor thirteen's seventy tried to encircle him entirely, closing from every tunnel at once; Blue Fire scorched through the attempt before it could close, the cavern lit briefly gold-blue with every strike. By floor fourteen's seventy-five, his movements had settled into something almost meditative — calm, precise, no motion wasted, blue soulfire burning steadier and more efficient with every fight it fed, as though the flame itself were learning alongside him.

Floor fifteen brought numbers heavier than anything before.

Azraeth didn't meet this wave the way he had the last. He let the first wave close in, gauging their formation rather than breaking it immediately, then dropped low.

Blue Colored Fire — Mud Lava

Molten mud spread beneath the charging front line, ice-cold Blue Fire turning it to something that scorched and froze in the same instant, and half the pack stumbled, footing lost entirely as claws and boots alike sank into ground that shouldn't have existed a moment earlier. He used the opening to weave through the confusion, Fire Dash carrying him behind their broken line before they could regroup and turn to face him.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Protection

A shield absorbed three strikes at once from kobolds converging on his back, and he answered with a sweeping counter that scattered them into the mud he'd already laid. A stray blade found his side anyway; without breaking stride, he pressed a palm to the wound.

Blue Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The gash sealed shut mid-motion, and he drove forward into the pack's remaining core, cornering the last cluster against a fallen pillar.

Blue Colored Fire — Sun Flare

A wide blue-white wave of celestial heat tore across the cavern, vaporizing the ice clinging to stone and ending the fight in a single, decisive stroke.

Floors sixteen through eighteen blurred into exhaustion and fire. Eighty-five kobolds fell to a battlefield already scarred from the fight before, ash and cracked stone underfoot before the first strike even landed. Ninety fought harder, smarter, forcing him through combinations he hadn't needed in weeks — feints layered atop feints, ambushes sprung from tunnels he hadn't noticed until they emptied. By floor eighteen's ninety-five, the cavern itself bore the Labyrinth's memory of him — scorched stone, cratered floors, tunnels blackened by blue flame that never quite faded, evidence of a war being waged one floor at a time against something that never seemed to run out of soldiers.

---

Floor nineteen's pack numbered a hundred, and Azraeth met them like nothing he'd fought before.

He used the terrain itself, Fire Dash carrying him up a broken pillar to strike downward into their formation, feinting one direction before pivoting entirely into an opening he'd manufactured a heartbeat earlier. Kobolds fell in clean, economical bursts, his martial arts flowing into flame and back again without a single wasted transition, footwork carrying him through gaps that shouldn't have existed until his passage created them. A trio tried to flank him from a side tunnel; he let them commit fully before dropping beneath their combined strike and answering with a sweeping kick that sent all three sprawling into the cavern wall.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Booster

He tore through the pack's densest cluster in a single motion, blue soulfire lashing outward to catch three at once, weaving between counterattacks that would have found him weeks earlier, reading feints that no longer fooled him at all. When the survivors regrouped into a final, desperate wall, bristling weapons raised in one last coordinated stand, he met it head-on rather than searching for another opening.

Blue Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A small, compressed sphere of stellar energy tore from his palm at blinding speed, punching clean through the last of them in a single, decisive line that left the cavern beyond it utterly silent.

Floor twenty's chamber dwarfed everything above it — a cavern so vast its ceiling vanished into darkness, ancient and utterly silent, heavier with age than even Gorthok's throne room had been. At its far end stood a sealed door taller than any Azraeth had yet encountered, its surface unmarked, untouched, waiting.

He approached slowly, and Heat Sense stretched instinctively ahead of him.

What it found made him stop entirely.

A presence, vast beyond anything the Labyrinth had shown him so far, radiating from beyond that sealed door — patient, ancient, and utterly certain that whatever waited on the other side had been waiting far longer than Azraeth had been alive.
