Nora's POV
Every pair of eyes around the table focuses on me, waiting for the rest of my explanation.
James leans forward slightly. "But he had no idea whether something actually escaped, what kind of entity it could have been, or where it might have headed." His voice carries a sharp edge. "Clearly he's doing an outstanding job monitoring you."
I take a breath, steeling myself. "Listen, I realize I should have brought this information straight to all of you, but I was being selfish. I wanted to savor being engaged because I understand..." My voice catches. "I understand there's a real possibility I'll never actually get to marry James."
My eyes drift shut as tears gather beneath my lids. Emotion isn't typically my strong suit, and watching me become vulnerable clearly disturbs my friends.
Ophelia jumps in quickly. "But nothing actually occurred, so no damage was done. If the entire world had combusted or something, then I'd be furious."
