Sonia stopped at the door of her room, her heart restless and uneven, as though it could not decide whether to race forward or collapse entirely.
She lingered there for a moment, her fingers hovering over the handle as she glanced down the hallway.
It stretched out in silence, empty and still, with no sign of Kelvin and no echo of his approaching footsteps. A breath she hadn't realized she was holding escaped her lips.
She was relieved—deeply relieved—that Kelvin had not followed her. Right now, she needed space.
She needed time to think, to process everything he had just told her, and to understand how her life had spiraled to this point without her even realizing it.
Her hand tightened around the doorknob, her grip firmer than necessary. Without allowing herself another second of hesitation, she pushed the door open and stepped inside as the room welcomed her in silence.
