"Baby, you take care of yourself. I will see you in a while," Alex said softly, his fingers brushing against Cyndi's cheek as he tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
His touch lingered for a second too long, as though he was trying to convince himself of something.
Cyndi's brow furrowed slightly, her sharp eyes searching his face. "Is there any problem?"
Alex shook his head almost immediately, a little too quickly to be natural. "Nothing. I just recalled there's a document I need to review at the company so my grandmother can sign it."
"Isn't it late already?" she pressed, her tone gentle,
Alex glanced at his wristwatch, as if confirming something he already knew, and nodded. "It is… and that is the reason why I have to get it done tonight."
"Does that mean…I…I will be staying alone tonight?"
Alex exhaled and sat back down on the chair beside her, taking her hand into his. His thumb brushed lightly across her knuckles in a comforting gesture.
