Cherreads

Chapter 4 - Chapter 2

February in the Highlands is a brutal, bone-chilling masterpiece of grey and silver. The air doesn't just blow; it bites, smelling of wet slate and ancient pine. While the rest of the world waits for spring, Scotland remains locked in a rhythmic cycle of mist and sleet—the kind of moody, gothic weather that makes magic feel entirely inevitable.

Nestled on the outskirts of Inverness, the cottage is a sprawling, stone-built marvel that seems to lean affectionately against the Scottish chill. It's the kind of affluent wizarding home where the architecture defies physics—chimneys twist into impossible corkscrews, puffing out smoke that lingers in the shape of sleeping dragons.

The garden is a wild, deliberate tangle of abundance and magical eccentricity. Rows of heavy-limbed apple and cherry trees bear fruit even in the frost, their branches glowing with a faint, golden hum. The ancient canopy of towering pines and silver birches act as a natural veil, hiding the estate from any prying Muggle eyes.

The Sentinel Swing, a simple wooden plank hangs from a massive oak by thick, enchanted ropes. It doesn't just swing; it glides with a mind of its own, reaching impossible heights that give the children a view of the distant peaks.

Just past the stone-paved path lies a private, obsidian-dark lake. In the summer, it's for swimming, but in February, the edges are rimmed with jagged lace-ice. A small, weathered rowboat waits at a rickety pier, though it's well-known among the family that the boat prefers to steer itself toward the center where the "water-folk" occasionally wave.

Through the diamond-paned windows, a warm, amber glow spills onto the snow. Inside, the 80s aesthetic is in full swing—velvet armchairs in deep emerald, thick wool rugs that occasionally try to trip visitors, and a wireless set that plays The Weird Sisters at a volume that makes the tea service rattle. It's a home that feels alive, smelling of cinnamon, old parchment, and the sharp, clean scent of the Highlands.
