For several seconds, I simply stared at the note. The paper trembled violently in my hands or perhaps I was the one trembling, I wasn't sure. The words blurred before my eyes.
Leave before the next full moon
The others didn't.
The others. The graves flashed through my mind. The women buried there might have been warned just like me. The message was clear. It was real.
A cold wave of terror swept through me.
I stopped for a moment to think. Why would someone send the message with a knife. Then it occurred to me that someone had deliberately written those words to make me afraid.
And it was working.
My heart hammered painfully against my ribs. Slowly, I forced myself to move. I began to search the room, under the bed, behind the curtains and inside the wardrobe.
Nothing.
No one. The room was empty yet the feeling remained. That horrible sensation that someone had been here standing where I stood. Probably had touched some of my things. The thought made my skin crawl.
