Chapter 12 - Page 12

Seeing the commissioner about to leave, an officer kindly spoke up:

"…I'll drive myself back."

Looking at the helicopter wreckage that hadn't yet been cleared, George almost immediately dismissed the idea of flying again.

Meanwhile, high above, ten thousand meters from the ground:

"Woohoo~!"

A figure streaked across the sky, leaving a shout of excitement in its wake.

"The Superman I used to be was nothing—but now, I am the real Superman!"

The figure in midair accelerated again, plummeting straight into the clouds below.

The tremendous speed generated explosive force, instantly dispersing the cotton-like white clouds.

A silver-white streak trailed behind, slicing through the clouds with incredible velocity.

The air itself bore a strange pattern that lingered for some time.

The figure shot out from the clouds, diving once more.

Over the vast, endless ocean, a silhouette appeared, flying at incredible speed, nearly skimming the water.

The supersonic rush of air carved a deep groove into the sea, like a sword slicing through water.

Amid the crashing waves, Peter suddenly glimpsed what seemed to be a massive creature beneath the surface.

Without hesitation, he leapt into the ocean.

Whoa!

Moments later, a towering wave erupted hundreds of meters away.

A gigantic whale leapt from the sea, soaring tens of meters into the air.

Whale: I'm taking off!

Now I'm coming back down!

Splash!

Peter felt the thrill of bouncing on water alongside the whale.

As the ocean waves surged, Peter shot skyward again.

He broke the sound barrier in an instant, piercing through the clouds.

Ahead, several dozen kilometers away, a passenger plane appeared. Peter accelerated, quickly closing the distance.

In just seconds, he caught up to the plane, slowed down, and matched its speed.

He then walked to the window and gently tapped. Behind the shade, a child peered out, wide-eyed.

"Dad, look! It's Superman!"

Peter waved to the child before the father could turn.

Moments later, he soared upward once more, climbing straight into the sky.

Scene shift.

Far out in space, a figure stretched arms wide toward the sun slowly rising over the horizon.

Golden light bathed him like a dream!

Whirr~

A police car slowly stopped in front of a luxury apartment in Queens.

After completing his errands, Commissioner George Stacy got out, closed the door, and briskly walked to the entrance.

"Hmm…"

He was a bit impatient but paused at the door, took a deep breath, and quietly stepped inside, slipping into his house slippers.

He deliberately slowed his pace, walking toward his bedroom.

However, when he reached his daughter's bedroom, he couldn't help but pause.

"Seems I haven't checked on Gwen in a long time."

Tonight's events had taught George many lessons.

At the moment the helicopter crashed, he had been only a step away from death.

He wasn't particularly afraid of dying; as a police officer, he had long accepted the possibility of dying in the line of duty.

Yet when death actually arrived, an overwhelming reluctance filled him—he didn't want to leave his daughter and wife.

He was terrified of never seeing them again.

Summoning courage, he reached his daughter's bedroom door and slowly lifted his hand.

But in the end, he didn't knock; he lowered it.

"That Spider-Woman… she's about Gwen's age."

As George left Gwen's room and headed toward his own, he recalled the Spider-Woman who risked her life to save him earlier, even exposing her identity.

He had been about to confront her but stopped, thinking of his daughter.

"Sigh… what a pity. After today, the precinct will probably be busy for a while. Don't know when we'll get a chance to rest and reunite with our families."

George sighed, resigned, and returned to his bedroom.

To reach his forties as a commissioner, he had sacrificed much—including time with his family.

Meanwhile, in Gwen's room, she lay in bed, seemingly asleep…

Her sharp senses detected her father's departure. She suddenly opened her eyes.

She slowly got up and carefully removed her tattered suit, worn and shredded after the night's battles.

"Hiss."

Despite her caution, she touched an injured area, and a sudden pain almost made her cry out.

"Luckily, my body has changed. My healing ability is many times stronger than a normal human's."

"Otherwise… I wouldn't know how to explain this tomorrow."

She applied the prepared medicine to her wounds.

Though in pain, Gwen lay back down and slowly closed her eyes.

Minutes later, she opened them again.

"Damn… I just can't sleep."

Exhausted physically, she remained mentally alert.

Finally, she took a notebook and pen from her bedside, leaned against her bed, and began sketching.

Soon, a vivid oil painting took shape: a figure in a black Spider suit leaping dynamically across the page.

Hiss…

After completing the painting, she tore it into countless pieces and threw them into the trash.

"Phew… I finally feel relieved!"

Gwen seemed to release her frustration in this unusual way and felt much better afterward.

"That figure… was he really Superman?"

Thinking of the awe-inspiring floating figure, Gwen slowly began to sketch again.

Far out in the cosmos, Peter spread his arms, embracing the sun.

He was fully immersed in the sensation, completely different from basking in sunlight on Earth.

Every cell in his body seemed to come alive.

Sunlight surged into his body, undergoing a transformation into a unique energy within him.

Almost every minute—and even every second—his body was rapidly enhancing itself.

Peter spent several hours in space, basking in sunlight with arms outstretched.

Night had passed over New York; the sun had risen in the east.

Peter, eyes closed, suddenly opened them.

When he opened them, a golden glow seemed to flow within.

In the next moment, he changed direction and rapidly descended toward Earth.

In less than a minute, Peter returned from hundreds of kilometers above.

Yet he didn't rush home.

Instead, he flew to a desolate location.
