Chapter 38 - Chapter 36; “Sad Little Man”

(Written while listening to: "Glitter & Gold" by Barns Courtney on YouTube)

There was an awkward silence.

Laito stood rigidly in front of a man that would probably be strong enough to erase cities from existence.

He kept playing with coins, similar to how a toddler plays with its toys.

"You may call me Midras, kid… you probably wonder… "Why is he here?" Hmm?" The Silver Sovereign introduced himself and asked rhetorical questions.

"Wherever living beings hold riches… There's also me. Though nowadays it's just… here." Midras said with a quiet, even voice.

Laito raised an eyebrow in surprise and wondered what he meant by that.

"You Incandescent guys probably feel quite resentful for that little blockade I made right?" The Sovereign of Wealth continued.

" "All these deaths could be avoided if only Forsaken Lands were evacuated…" that's what you all thought. What little Gandy and you all don't seem to realize that the situation on the mainland… is actually even worse than it is here." The Emperor revealed with a spit.

"In fact at this point in time, my domain over there is fully gone. These vile creatures have already swarmed every city…- every small settlement…- gone. All fleeing people have abandoned their wealth and I can't sense them anymore." Midras said, his tone turning sad.

There was a slight pause.

" You know… I never wanted any of this… being chosen to be an extension for a will of a god… not in time when there's no proper Avatar… when the War came I made my best to weasel myself out of it as much I could… It was a good decision. It all ended up in mutual destruction anyways." The more he talked the more dispassioned he sounded.

"That damn Weaver has set everything up, as always. Just as these cultists say, soon there will come an age of the Nightmare Spell upon all realms. The age of gods is over…- and so is my time."

"From what I understood, you are a carrier of that Spell…- right?" Midras asked.

Laito nodded in confirmation.

–

Again a small pause.

"You know… I once saw it… Eh, have you ever heard about "Tomb of Ariel"? The emperor of the fallen empire asked another question.

Laito reached out to his memory. It was hard to forget Sunny's third Nightmare inside the Deamon's Tomb… a place where Time was folded onto itself, made from the corpse of the Unholy Titan.

Truly a harrowing, if not THE most harrowing of all places.

"Yes." Laito conformed again.

"" Midras grunted. "I do not envy you Spell's guys with that one. When we went there I saw a few of the other mortal realm's sovereigns instantly popped with corruption the moment they glanced at what's called seventh Seed… At that moment I skedaddled the first occasion I got." Ancient Sovereign admitted.

"Luckily. As I heard, those who stayed and fought had… bad experiences with that battle. Or rather have… even to this moment."

'Seventh Seed is in the Tomb of Ariel?... damn I thought it was on the moon or something.' Laito tried to remember what he read from the novel, alongside some fan theories from that time.

'Then why was that Ass guy on the moon again… Damn it details gets fuzzy with time… not good. I might need all this information in the future.'

Midras continued his story.

"I escaped back to this realm and hid to the best of our abilities. Up until some time ago it was enough."

"But not anymore… In the end corruption swallows all. Fate has decided that we need to make place for those who will carry the Spell in the future."

"It was always the losing fight from the very beginning." He finished dejectedly.

At that moment a distant sound thundered through empty stone halls.

"Ah! Here comes my end. Splendid." The sad Sovereign sighted and swiped off the coins he was playing with, as he stood up wiping his pants from a glittering golden dust.

"You should probably leave. I do not plan to go out without a fight and your time is apparently also ticking. Thanks for hearing out to the old, dying man rambling… here!" Midras started to make his farewells as he threw an object into Laito's hands.

Laito has catched it.

Midras raised his eyebrows at his golden ring he had given away disappearing in a small whirlwind of blue sparks.

He didn't comment though.

There were no words left to say, Midras just turned to face the huge entrance to the vault that would soon welcome back a certain titanic red dragon.

Laito indeed had no more time to waste, he was just glad that terrifying Sovereign was letting him go scot-free, so he just expressed his gratitude and bid his farewells.

But he hesitated.

And said with hesitation to resigned Soveregn.

"You certainly know, Sir, that names have power... I don't know if it is going to be of any help...- but apparently the dragon's name is...- Obbadoth" Laito said.

Although Laito couldn't see that, Midras silver eyes glimmered for a moment with an idea.

"Is that so. Thanks for saying." He said, his voice turning back to sound even. Maybe even slightly bored.

With that Laito checked in which direction the Light that his body gave off was pointing towards.

At the opposite side of the vault from where Laito had entered he noticed another tunnel looking exactly the same as the one he walked previously.

He glanced one last time at the turned Sovereign of Wealth that was about to face his end and ran towards the exit.

When he reached it, Laito heard a sound of metal clinging.

As he turned he saw the huge mountains of wealth shuffling, raising and rearranging itself as if on its own will.

It was Midras directly controlling the grand dragon hoard so that he could throw it right into a face of its owner.

Though Laito was curious about how this fight would look, he was under no illusion that he would be squashed like an insect from just hanging around.

And as such the reincarnator wasted no more time…

And dived into the darkness once again.
