Chapter 75 - Chapter 74: Midday Interlude

Good afternoon, McQueen. Are you the only one here?

Inside the training room, Gold Legend greeted Mejiro McQueen, who was sitting properly nearby, while changing her clothes.

Good afternoon, Legend-san.

Mejiro McQueen greeted her elegantly.

You don't need to rush changing. Trainer hasn't arrived yet; it's still early.

See, I haven't even remembered to change yet.

I know. I just changed early so I could rest for a bit." Gold Legend finished changing and sat down next to McQueen.

...Did you not sleep well last night?" McQueen was slightly intrigued, as it was a rare sight for this Scoundrel to appear tired.

Yes." Gold Legend nodded.

Only then did Mejiro McQueen notice the slight dark circles under Gold Legend's eyes.

How unusual. I rarely see Legend looking tired. What happened?" McQueen seized the opportunity to ask.

Well, you know how I went to work at the Student Council yesterday?" Gold Legend said.

Yes. Classmate Suzuka and Classmate Special Week were both very disappointed not to see you yesterday.

Speaking of which, Mejiro McQueen felt a little annoyed. Both of them had sighed in disappointment when they introduced themselves and didn't see Gold Legend.

When did you manage to charm these two? And that Special Week just enrolled, didn't she?

Mejiro McQueen felt somewhat indignant.

Air Groove, the Student Council Vice President, is on vacation, so they were short-staffed, and I was conscripted.

After all, I am also a member of the Student Council.

Gold Legend slumped bonelessly in the chair, speaking weakly.

Why is the Student Council short-staffed just because Air Groove-senpai is on vacation?

Mejiro McQueen thought about it but decided not to ask.

Originally, this shouldn't have been a big deal, but the workload was unexpectedly heavy. The President and I worked until the middle of the night to finish." Gold Legend continued.

Wait! You and the President? Just the two of you? Working until the middle of the night?" Mejiro McQueen noticed the Key Point.

Yes, why?

...Nothing. Please continue." Mejiro McQueen struggled to suppress the urge to question her.

Then, because of the work, we didn't have time for dinner, so the President took me out to eat at a restaurant.

Went out to eat, huh? That's fine, then?

"Where did you two eat out?" McQueen exhaled, asking casually.

"Tokyo Skytree."

"Huh?" Mejiro McQueen froze.

"The president recommended it—she seems to be a regular. There's a Western restaurant up in the Skytree, on the observation deck, right by the windows. You can look down on the night view; all of the Kantō region spreads out beneath you. The dining experience is superb—provided the president skips her cold jokes." Gold Legend couldn't resist poking fun at Rudolf's hobby.

"..." You call that eating out?

"Honestly, I'm a bit acrophobic, so I couldn't enjoy the scenery, but the ocean of city lights was still impressive. I don't know music, yet that violin really was beautiful." Gold Legend nodded. "Most important, the steak and red wine were first-rate—worthy of an emperor's palate. For once, I tasted the high life."

"..."

Mejiro McQueen pictured the scene.

Inside the landmark Skytree, embraced by a glittering carpet of lights, a live violinist playing, a majestic Uma Musume and a breathtakingly beautiful Uma Musume seated across from each other, elegantly slicing premium steak, crystal goblets of red wine lifted in a soft toast, eyes meeting in a smile, souls conversing.

That's a date, right? That's a date!

A ridiculously romantic, fantastical date!

Mejiro McQueen's face contorted.

"Next time I'll take you two—McQueen, what's wrong?"

"...Nothing at all."

"But your expression looks like a wife watching a fox spirit steal her husband right under her nose," Gold Legend offered this bizarre analogy.

"...So, you're exhausted because you had dinner with the president?"

McQueen, stay calm—you've no standing to criticize.

Mejiro McQueen smothered the jealousy blazing inside her.

"Not really. It's just that I endured two hours of the president's puns, then couldn't sleep afterward." Gold Legend rubbed her eyes. "Now I fully understand what Air Groove Senior goes through—total empathy."

"...Your meal took two hours?"

"Dinner with the boss—pretty normal." Gold Legend missed the jealousy dripping from McQueen's tone.

"In... Out..." McQueen drew a slow, deep breath.

"By the way, Legend-san, you're tired, aren't you?" McQueen smiled with her lips, not her eyes.

"I'm okay. Talking with you perks me up." Legend grinned and yawned.

"No rush—we've plenty of time. Want to lean back and rest?" McQueen patted her lap, eyes narrowing in a smile.

"Eh? McQueen, offering me a lap pillow?" Gold Legend teased. "I'm good—pretty awake."

"It's fine. When you're tired, you should rest—no need to be polite." No warmth reached McQueen's eyes.

"I'll pass. Don't know why, but a chill's running down my spine; I'd never sleep. I'll warm up instead." Gold Legend rose to stretch.

"Legend-san~" McQueen's voice was soft and light.

"Eek!" A shiver shot up Gold Legend's spine; her tail bristled.

"When you're tired, rest properly." Two strong little hands pressed down on Legend's shoulders, pushing her back onto the seat.

"Um..." McQueen, you're scaring me.

"It's all right. Just rest." Gently, McQueen laid Legend's head on her lap, every motion tender.

"O-okay." good-girl.jpg

Whatever she'd done to anger McQueen, obeying was safest now.

Gold Legend felt the cushion beneath her head.

So firm—the legs of a long-distance ace.

This texture—powerful, formidable!

Pure bliss.

And so Gold Legend drifted off to sleep.
