The gunshot cracked through the house like a clap of thunder trapped inside a small room.

I flinched so hard that the bed actually shook beneath my weight. My heart slammed against my ribs with a violent force, and it refused to slow down no matter how much I tried to breathe. I pushed myself up from the mattress, feeling the sheets twist and tangle around my legs. My eyes darted immediately toward the corner of the room.

The shopping bags were still there. They sat in a neat pile where Marcus had left them. The clothes inside were still folded perfectly. The tags were still attached to the fabric. All the books were untouched, their covers shiny and new. Marcus had brought them into the room earlier that evening. He didn't speak a single word when he set them down. He just turned around and left, locking the door behind him.
