"Watch their duel…?" Kaiba considered it. He wanted to enter the castle and challenge Pegasus as fast as possible—to bring Mokuba back. Kisaragi's idea would get them to ten Star Chips sooner.
"Fine," Kaiba said at last. "Show me what you two can really do. If I'm satisfied, I'll accept Kisaragi's plan."
"Tch. Then watch closely and see the true power of me—Joey Wheeler!" Joey snapped.
Two figures stepped out from the crowd—Weevil Underwood and Rex Raptor.
"Kisaragi! You made me a laughingstock in the National Duelist Tournament!" Weevil hissed. "This time, I'm getting my revenge!"
"And me too!" Rex barked. "Last time I lost because I let my guard down. I won't lose to you again!"
"Oh? It's you two," Kisaragi said with a smile.
"What're you smiling at?!" Weevil shouted.
"Scared out of your mind already?!" Rex piled on.
They traded jeers like a rehearsed routine.
"I'm not interested in you two right now," Kisaragi said calmly—then glanced at Yugi and Joey. "But… this is perfect."
"These are your opponents," she told them. "An ex–Top 8 duelist and the tournament runner-up. They're a bit stronger than the average nobody—so they'll make a better measuring stick."
Then she looked back at Kaiba.
"Well? What do you think?"
"If you two can crush these bugs easily," Kaiba said, nodding once, "I'll agree to the plan."
At that moment, the Millennium Puzzle on Yugi's chest gleamed—and Yami Yugi surfaced.
"Then I'll take Weevil," Yami Yugi said.
This strategy is efficient, he thought. And I want my grandpa back—fast.
"Then I'll handle Rex Raptor!" Joey declared.
Weevil and Rex sized them up.
"You're Joey Wheeler, huh?" Rex sneered. "Sure, you made the semifinals, but you still look like an idiot. You probably got lucky."
"Heh heh heh!" Weevil giggled. "And I've never even heard of this starfish-head. You think you can challenge the NATIONAL runner-up? I'll show you how cruel Duel Monsters really is!"
"Enough talk. Duel me," Yami Yugi said flatly.
"Gladly!" Weevil raised his voice—and the ground behind him rumbled. Panels split apart in neat seams, and two duel machines rose smoothly from below.
"Duel machines…? Does this island have them everywhere?" Yami Yugi muttered.
"Of course!" Weevil crowed. "This island is a battlefield where duelists slaughter each other!"
"Joey—let's go," Yami Yugi said.
"Yeah!"
"You two—good luck!" Téa called out.
Kisaragi watched closely.
This is my first time seeing Yami Yugi duel in person… How strong is he really?
Kaiba, meanwhile, saw how intently she was watching Yugi—and felt something in his chest tighten, like an invisible hand had grabbed him.
Yami Yugi vs. Weevil — Duel Field
"I'm wagering two Star Chips," Yami Yugi said, removing both chips at once.
"Heh heh heh—then I'll wager two as well."
"Wagers confirmed. Duel start!"
"DUEL!"
Yami Yugi: LP 4000
Weevil: LP 4000
"Weevil—first turn is mine!"
"My turn—draw!"
"I activate the Spell Card Graceful Charity! I draw three cards, then discard two!"
"Next, I set one card. Turn end!" (Cards in hand: 5)
"What? Yugi didn't summon a monster?!" Tristan blurted.
"I don't get it either," Téa admitted, "but I trust him. He must have a reason."
"What is he thinking?!" Kaiba scoffed. "If that insect drops two high-level monsters next turn, he's finished!"
"I don't think so," Kisaragi said.
"One set card… and the two cards he discarded with Graceful Charity…" Her eyes sharpened as she remembered a card she'd given Yugi. Understanding dawned instantly.
"Heh heh heh!" Weevil laughed. "Do you even know the rules of Duel Monsters? And you still got an invitation from Pegasus?!"
"My turn—draw!"
"I Normal Summon Pinch Hopper in Attack Position!"
A green grasshopper-like monster appeared on Weevil's field.
Pinch Hopper(ATK 1000 / DEF 1200)
"Now I activate the Spell Card Needle God's Insecticide! It destroys all face-up Insect monsters on the field!"
A spray blasted Pinch Hopper—destroying it instantly.
"Huh? Why would Weevil destroy his own monster?" Tristan asked, baffled.
"Heh heh heh! Pinch Hopper's effect activates! When this card is sent from my field to the Graveyard, I can Special Summon one Insect-Type monster from my hand!"
"Come forth—Metal Armored Bug!"
A heavy, steel-plated insect crashed onto the field.
Metal Armored Bug(ATK 2800 / DEF 1500)
"No way…!" Tristan gasped. "He summoned something that strong in a single turn?!"
"Heh heh heh! See that, Yugi?!" Weevil crowed. "This thing's attack power is second only to the legendary Blue-Eyes White Dragon! You can't possibly beat it!"
Kaiba's brow twitched—like he'd been personally insulted.
"Hmph. If Yugi loses, I'll tear that insect apart myself," Kaiba said coldly.
"I don't think you'll get the chance," Kisaragi replied. "Because Weevil is going to lose—to Yugi."
"What?" Kaiba shot back. "Yugi has no monsters. How is he supposed to beat that?"
"Keep watching," Kisaragi said, smiling.
Kaiba's irritation didn't fade—but curiosity won out.
"Battle! Metal Armored Bug, direct attack!"
The armored insect leapt and coiled through the air toward Yami Yugi.
"Yugi!" Téa screamed.
"Hmph. A reckless attack," Yami Yugi said—and flipped his set card.
"I activate the Trap Card Mirror Force! When an opponent's monster declares an attack: destroy all Attack Position monsters they control!"
A shimmering, rainbow-like barrier bloomed in front of him.
Metal Armored Bug slammed into it—and shattered into fragments.
"W-what?! He set a trap like that?!" Weevil panicked.
"And now—my hand responds," Yami Yugi said. "I activate the effect of Magician of Dark Illusion! When I activate a Spell/Trap effect during my opponent's turn, I can Special Summon this card from my hand!"
"Come forth—Magician of Dark Illusion!" (ATK 2100 / DEF 2500)
"What?! You can summon a high-level monster like that?!" Weevil yelled.
Weevil's eyes narrowed as his field emptied.
So now he has a monster… and I don't. Good. Then I'll pay him back with my own trick…
"I set one card. Turn end!" (Cards in hand: 2)
