The return journey through the subterranean "Data Veins" was a chaotic blur of heavy breathing and the rhythmic clatter of boots against metal. The twelve freed Testers—men and women who had spent weeks in stasis—were like newborn fawns, their limbs trembling as the "Hell Mode" gravity of the New Earth pressed down on them.
Han-ul moved at the rear, the dead weight of the unconscious Arthur slumped over his shoulder. The First Hero, once a beacon of golden light, was now just a sweating, pale human in a cracked suit of armor. Without the System's support, Arthur's body was struggling to process the atmospheric pressure.
"Faster!" Han-ul urged, his voice a low hiss that echoed through the tunnel. "The reboot only masked our exit. Once the Sanitizers report the empty tubes, the Spire will pulse a 'Sector-Wide Ping.' We need to be behind the Leech Core before that happens."
Ji-yoon led the way, her bow drawn, though her fingers were raw from the tension. "We're almost there. I can smell the ozone from the batteries."
They burst into the Euljiro 3-ga station. The "Leeches" had been waiting. When they saw the group of bedraggled Testers emerging from the dark, a cheer began to rise, but it was quickly silenced by Director Lim.
"Save the celebration for when we aren't being hunted by a planetary operating system!" she barked. She looked at the man on Han-ul's shoulder. her eyes widened. "Is that...?"
"The 'Hand of the Administrator,'" Han-ul said, dropping Arthur onto a tattered subway seat. "Or he was. Now he's just a guy who's going to have the world's worst headache when he wakes up."
Choi ran forward with a handheld scanner. "Level 1. His status is completely flat. Han-ul, you didn't just break the blessing... you deleted his entire progression history."
The freed Testers huddled together in the center of the station. One of them, a tall man with scarred hands who had been a veteran firefighter before the Patch, stepped toward Han-ul.
"You're the one," the man said, his voice raspy from the amber fluid. "The Archivist. We heard the System's broadcast in our sleep. It was screaming about an 'Error' in the Red Ward."
"I'm Han-ul," the MC replied, pulling back his hood. He looked at the survivors. They were high-potential individuals—people whose wills were too strong for the initial synchronization. "And you're the reason I'm now the most wanted man on Earth. I hope you're ready to fight, because the 'Safety Zone' is about to become a war zone."
"We were ready to die in those tubes," the firefighter said, a spark of defiance returning to his eyes. "Fighting is a promotion."
Han-ul turned to Director Lim. "How much time do we have?"
Lim checked a monitor that was flickering with red warnings. "The 'Great Hunt' directive is already propagating. The other 98 Heroes in Gangnam are being mobilized. They're being told that killing you is the only way to 'Fix the World.' The propaganda is incredible, Han-ul. The System is painting you as a demonic entity that's eating people's levels."
"In a way, I am," Han-ul muttered, looking at the [Null-Blade] hilt.
Suddenly, the station lights flickered—not the purple of the logic bomb, but a steady, cold white. The blue data veins in the ceiling began to glow with a blinding intensity.
"It's the Ping!" Choi screamed. "Everyone, get under the Scrambler!"
The "Leeches" and Testers dived for the center of the station, huddling under the massive, jury-rigged machine. Han-ul stayed standing, watching the cables.
A wave of white light swept through the tunnel. It wasn't physical; it was a sensory scan. As it passed over them, Han-ul felt a cold, oily sensation, like an invisible eye was peering into his very cells.
The [Scavenger's Cloak] billowed around him. The [Null-Blade] hummed in defiance.
The light passed.
"Status?" Lim asked, her voice trembling.
The technician at the terminal let out a breath he'd been holding for a minute. "The Scrambler held. To the Spire, this station looks like a pocket of 'Corrupted Static.' We're invisible... for now."
A groan came from the subway car. Arthur was stirring.
Ji-yoon and two other Testers immediately surrounded him, weapons raised. Arthur's eyes fluttered open. There was no gold. There was only the confused, pained expression of a man who had just woken up from a nightmare only to find the reality was worse.
He looked at his hands. He looked at the people around him. Finally, his eyes landed on Han-ul.
"The ramyun..." Arthur whispered.
"What?" Ji-yoon frowned.
"I remember... the 7-Eleven," Arthur said, his voice cracking. "I saw you. You were eating ramyun when the light hit. I thought... I thought you were a ghost. The System told me you were a ghost."
Han-ul walked over and sat opposite him. "The System tells a lot of lies, Arthur. It told you that you were a god. It told you that the people in those tubes were trash."
Arthur grabbed his head, his face contorting in pain. "The voices... they're gone. It's so quiet. Why is it so quiet?"
"Because you're finally thinking for yourself," Han-ul said. "And right now, you need to think fast. The System has put a price on my head. Instant Level 50. Every 'Hero' in the city is coming for me. You were their leader. You know their scripts. You know their weaknesses."
Arthur looked at the firefighter, at the Leeches, and finally back at Han-ul. A tear tracked through the soot on his cheek. "They aren't my friends anymore. They're... they're nodes. If they find us, they won't stop until the 'Error' is corrected."
"Then we make sure they don't find us," Han-ul said. He pulled out the [Broken Compass of the Architect].
The needle was no longer pointing North-East. It was spinning in a slow, hypnotic circle, then suddenly stopped, pointing straight at the ground beneath their feet.
"The compass found something," Ji-yoon said. "But we're already in the basement of the city. What's lower than the sewers?"
Han-ul checked his [Patch Notes].
[Note 13: The Sub-Layer]
Note 13.1: Beneath the rendered world of Earth v.1.0 lies the 'Buffer Zone.'
Note 13.2: This is where the System stores 'Unfinished Assets' and 'Beta Terrain.'
Note 13.3: Entrance located at: Euljiro 3-ga, Sector 4. Password required.
Han-ul looked at the station floor. "We aren't hiding in the sewers anymore. We're going into the source code."
He stood up and looked at the ragtag group of survivors. They were weak, hungry, and hunted. But they were the only "errors" left in a perfect, dying world.
"Choi, pack the batteries," Han-ul commanded. "Arthur, get up. You're Level 1, but you still know how to swing a sword. We're going to the Sub-Layer."
As they began to move toward the back of the station, Han-ul felt a strange vibration in his pocket. He pulled out the Administrator's Key. The violet light was flashing a new message.
[HIDDEN QUEST TRIGGERED] Objective: Establish the 'Glitched Kingdom.' Reward: Access to the 'Developer's Console' (Partial). Failure: Absolute Deletion of the Human Species.
Han-ul tucked the key away, his grip tightening on the Null-Blade. The 500-chapter journey had officially found its path. He wasn't just a survivor anymore. He was a founder.
"Ji-yoon," Han-ul called out.
"Yeah?"
"From now on, don't call me the Archivist."
"Then what should I call you?"
Han-ul looked down into the dark abyss of the Sub-Layer.
"The Administrator."
