Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 – The Halls of Darkhaven

The massive gates swung shut behind Kael with a deep, echoing clang, and the courtyard stretched before him like a world unto itself. Cobblestones glimmered faintly under the morning mist, humming with residual magic as students scurried across the open space.

The courtyard fountain spiraled silver water unnaturally into the air, reflecting pale sunlight in shimmering arcs.

Beyond the courtyard, the view stole Kael's breath. Towering spires reached into the sky, their crystalline tips catching the light like captured stars. The academy's grounds stretched across a cliffside plateau, revealing dense forests spilling into jagged mountains in the distance. Waterfalls tumbled down rocky faces, feeding rivers that glimmered like molten silver. Even the clouds above shimmered faintly, tinged with elemental energy.

Then, as if called by some unseen command, Lysera Veyne appeared. She hovered a few inches above the polished stone floor, robes flowing effortlessly around her. Every student instinctively straightened, whispers died, and even the nobles faltered under her gaze. A low hum vibrated through the air, subtle yet impossible to ignore. Kael felt it brush against his senses — a quiet pressure that made his pulse quicken.

"Move along, newcomers," she said, her calm voice resonating in every corner of the hall. Her presence was more than authority; it was a force that made even the bravest hesitate. Beside her, Principal Eldric Vaelor stood grounded and imposing, a stark contrast — wisdom in solid form beside Lysera's ethereal power.

As students moved forward, a group of nobles whispered among themselves, robes embroidered with gold and silver threads catching the light:

"Have you heard what the first trial will be this year?" one asked, tone clipped with curiosity.

"Only rumors," another replied, eyes flicking toward the wings. "They say it's designed to reveal instinct and control… to test who belongs and who doesn't."

"Families are already warning their heirs. Failure isn't just personal here — it reflects on your lineage."

"I hope the newcomers make this interesting for us," a third said with a smirk, tilting their head as if daring anyone to challenge them.

Kael listened quietly, noting the pressure nobles placed on each other, the whispered warnings, and the subtle intimidation.

Survival here wasn't just about magic it was about composure, lineage, and courage.

The students reached the grand staircase leading into the academy's central hall.

Floating chandeliers sparkled like captured stars, and each wing glowed faintly in colors representing its element — Pyronis for fire, Aquara for water, Terran for earth, Aetheris for air. Shadows flickered strangely at the edge of the Umbrawraith Wing, almost as if the walls themselves were alive.

Lysera's gaze swept over the newcomers one last time before she drifted toward the far balcony, her robes billowing, a subtle hum following her path. Students instinctively moved straighter, voices softer, aware that every action was observed. Kael felt a twinge of awareness — a sense that something in the academy had already noticed him, though he wasn't sure what.

At the center of the hall, Eldric Vaelor raised his hand, the room falling silent instantly. His voice carried, steady and commanding:

"Welcome, students. Today, you begin your first test — the Obstacle Gauntlet."

The words hung in the air, heavy with suspense. Kael's stomach twisted. The courtyard outside shimmered faintly, as though anticipating what was to come. The trial name echoed in his mind, an unspoken warning of what awaited, and the weight of Darkhaven pressed down on him like the first shadow of a storm.

And with that, the academy's doors opened wider, beckoning him forward — into the unknown.
