Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: Echoes From Tomorrow

The narrow industrial tunnel was bathed in the Quantum Bridge's pale blue glow. Every wall, pipe, and rusted vent reflected its eerie light, making shadows dance like ghosts.

Kai crouched before the glowing node, the device Lira had discovered. Lines of energy pulsed across it in a rhythmic pattern, almost like a heartbeat.

"It's… communicating," Lira whispered, eyes wide. "Not just sending signals… communicating."

Milo squinted. "Communicating? What is it saying? Speak English, glowing thing!"

Kai shook his head. "It's… more than words. Patterns, calculations, even warnings. Someone—or something—is guiding us."

Before anyone could respond, the wall behind them shimmered. Cameras embedded in the metal flickered to life, and the insider—cloaked in black—stepped out, blocking the exit.

Kai's jaw tightened. "So… the welcoming committee shows up."

The insider's face was partially hidden, but Kai recognized him from earlier feeds: Dr. Maren Voss, a high-level technician who had always stayed too close to the Quantum Bridge for comfort.

"Impressive," Maren said, voice cold. "You actually reached the node. But unfortunately… you're too late."

Milo muttered under his breath, "Too late for what? Snacks?"

Lira's fingers flew across the portable console. "He's manipulating the drones! If we stay here, we're trapped!"

Kai nodded. "Milo, EMP. Now."

Milo tossed a small device, sparks flying. The drones collapsed in jerking, fumbling arcs. Maren's eyes narrowed.

Kai didn't waste time. "Lira, what is the signal saying?"

Lira stared at the scrolling code. Then she gasped. "It's… a message… from the future. Kai… it knows you."

Kai froze. "Knows me?"

"Yes," Lira continued. "It's giving instructions… calculations… predictions. And it warns: one of us will betray the others. But it also… says you can change it."

Milo's jaw dropped. "Change… betrayal? Are we in some dramatic soap opera or the apocalypse?"

Kai ignored him. "Who does it mean? Maren?"

Before Lira could answer, Maren lunged, attempting to grab the portable console. Kai dodged, barely. Milo swung a metal pipe, forcing Maren back.

Raze suddenly appeared, landing behind Maren with silent precision. With one swift move, he neutralized her briefly—not harming her, but holding her down.

"Why are you helping them?" Kai demanded, panting.

Raze's eyes were unreadable. "Because some mistakes… are worth saving. Yours is one of them."

Milo whispered, "Okay… scary guy is officially scary and helpful. I like it."

Lira turned back to the node, hands flying over the console. "We have to act fast. The message… it's giving us coordinates—places in the city where something must be changed. And it's… showing events… that haven't happened yet."

Kai's stomach tightened. "So the future knows what we'll do… and it's depending on us to fix it."

Milo swallowed nervously. "I'm suddenly less funny and more terrified. Cool. Just my style."

From the shadows, Maren spoke again, voice low and dangerous. "You think you can rewrite the future? Director Valen will make sure you regret that. And I'll be the one to stop you."

Kai's eyes met Lira's. "We don't have much time. The signal… it chose us for a reason. If we hesitate, everything collapses."

Lira nodded. "Then we move. Together."

The node pulsed brighter, and the message scrolled faster, almost impatiently, as if urging them onward.

Somewhere in the distance, alarms wailed, drones hovered, and the city itself seemed to pulse with tension.

Milo muttered under his breath, "Future talking to us, evil insiders, scary security guy helping… Yep. Definitely my kind of adventure."

Kai clenched his fists. "We survive. We follow the signal. And we stop Valen—no matter what it takes."

Raze stood silently behind them, a shadow of authority and mystery. For the first time, Kai felt a glimmer of trust.

The Quantum Bridge pulsed once more, a glowing heartbeat echoing through the tunnel.

The future was calling.

And humanity's fate rested in the hands of a few unlikely heroes.
