The city below was a maze of shadows and flickering neon lights, but the rooftop offered little safety. The Quantum Bridge pulsed in the distance, a pale blue heart beating across the skyline.
Kai, Lira, and Milo crouched behind rusted vents, catching their breath. The insider villain had vanished—but that didn't mean they were safe. Every movement in Nova Juba was monitored, every street potentially lethal.
Milo whispered, "So… we survived a collapsing lab, drones, walls of energy… and now rooftops. I'm starting to think survival is my cardio."
Kai ignored him, eyes scanning the horizon. "The signal… it's repeating a pattern now. Faster. Someone—or something—wants us to follow it."
Lira tapped at the portable console. "The data aligns with coordinates in the lower industrial sector. But it's a trap… I can feel it."
Milo raised an eyebrow. "You're psychic now too? Sweet."
Before anyone could joke more, a screeching alarm echoed across the rooftops. Security drones descended from the sky like metallic vultures. The insider villain appeared at the opposite end, controlling them remotely.
Kai cursed under his breath. "We move now. No hesitation."
Milo rolled his eyes but nodded. "Copy that, Captain Obvious."
The team sprinted across the rooftops, leaping gaps and dodging laser scans. Sparks flew as Milo grabbed a loose metal pipe, knocking a drone off balance. It crashed into a stack of abandoned machinery below.
Behind them, Raze appeared silently on the next rooftop. His heavy boots made no sound, but his presence was undeniable. He didn't attack, didn't shout… he simply guided the team through the safest path, subtly blocking drones without revealing himself.
Kai noticed, a flicker of understanding in his chest. He's helping, but why?
Milo gasped as a drone swooped low, firing a blinding laser. He rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding it. "Okay… maybe I like this guy! Big scary guy helping secretly!"
Kai didn't smile. He scanned the path ahead—metal walkways, collapsing scaffolds, and narrow beams. Every step could be fatal.
Lira shouted, "Through the industrial tunnel! I calculated a gap in the security grid!"
They dove through a rusted doorway just as the rooftop behind them erupted in sparks and crashing metal. The alleyway was dark and suffocating, filled with pipes, wires, and the stench of the industrial city.
Milo muttered, "Worst subway ride ever. No peanuts, no comfort… just death."
Kai ignored him, focusing on the signal. It was a faint glow from a device Lira had rigged—an improvised tracker. The energy patterns were too precise to be random, almost intelligent.
Suddenly, the floor beneath Milo collapsed, sending him sliding dangerously close to a jagged pipe. Kai lunged, grabbing Milo's arm just in time.
Milo coughed, looking up with wide eyes. "Thanks… I think. Maybe. You could let go, you know, I'm heavy."
Kai pulled him up. "Not now. Survive first, jokes later."
Lira moved ahead, scanning the tunnel walls. "The signal… it's here. Right behind this panel. But it's guarded."
Kai frowned. "Guarded by what?"
Before anyone could answer, a swarm of small surveillance drones dropped from the ceiling, cutting off their escape. Tiny, fast, lethal.
Milo groaned, tossing a makeshift EMP grenade from his backpack. Sparks and smoke filled the tunnel, scrambling the drones for a few seconds.
Kai grabbed Lira's hand. "Move!"
They sprinted, dodging debris and sparks, hearts pounding, lungs burning. The signal's glow grew stronger, almost as if it was calling them.
As they reached the panel, Raze appeared at the tunnel entrance. For the first time, he spoke to the team directly.
"You'll need this," he said, tossing a compact security override device to Kai. "Use it wisely. I'm not here to fight you… yet."
Kai caught the device, stunned. "Why are you helping us?"
Raze's eyes were unreadable. "Because some mistakes… must be preserved."
Kai didn't have time to ask more. He tore open the panel, revealing a small, glowing node—the source of the signal.
Lira gasped. "It's… beautiful. And powerful."
Kai connected their tracker, and the signal flared, illuminating the tunnel in pale blue light. Lines of data scrolled rapidly, forming shapes that almost resembled letters… or faces.
Milo whispered, awestruck, "This… this isn't a machine. It's… alive."
Kai swallowed, feeling a mixture of fear and awe. "Or… someone wants us to believe it is."
Outside, the city's chaos continued. But inside the tunnel, the team felt the weight of destiny pressing down.
Somewhere far above, the insider watched through cameras. Somewhere else, Director Valen Korr's plan moved closer to execution.
And in the shadows, Raze's loyalties remained a mystery—an unpredictable force that could save them… or doom them all.
