Chapter 125 - The RushUnlock Protocol

[The Omniverse - Sector 7 Dungeon Labyrinth]

Deep within the damp, obsidian corridors of a franchised Sector 7 dungeon, Leo the indebted hero was sprinting for his life. His armor was cracked, and his Stamina Meter was flashing a dangerous, depleted red.

Swarming behind him was a massive horde of screeching Void-Spiders.

"Just make it to the Safe Room!" Leo screamed to his terrified party, vaulting over a spike trap. "The iron doors are indestructible!"

Leo crashed into the heavy mythril doors of the Safe Room, reaching for the heavy iron handle. It wouldn't budge. Where a traditional keyhole should have been, there was a sleek, glowing biometric scanner bearing the Abyssal Hardware logo.

A cheerful holographic terminal projected into the dark corridor.

[WELCOME TO RUSHUNLOCK. FAST, SEAMLESS SECURITY FOR THE MODERN ADVENTURER.]

"A digital lock?!" Leo panicked, slamming his gauntlet against the door as the spiders rounded the corner. "Open! Open the door!"

[TO ACCESS THE SAFE ROOM, PLEASE AUTHORIZE A 500-TOKEN RUSHUNLOCK FEE.]

"Five hundred Tokens?!" Leo's mage screamed. "Just pay it! They're right behind us!"

Leo frantically swiped his corporate ID card against the scanner.

BZZZT.

The terminal flashed red.

[WARNING. HIGH BIOMETRIC STRESS DETECTED. PROXIMITY SENSORS INDICATE A TIER-8 MONSTER HORDE IS APPROACHING.]

[DUE TO HIGH DEMAND FOR SAFETY, RUSHUNLOCK 'PRIORITY QUEUING' HAS BEEN ACTIVATED. NEW UNLOCK FEE: 15,000 TOKENS.]

"Fifteen thousand?!" Leo wept, watching the spiders bare their fangs. "That's three months of rent! It multiplied by thirty!"

Up in the pristine, climate-controlled executive office of the Abyssal Cloud Hub, Victor Thorne took a slow sip of his black coffee, watching the live security feed on his Tycoon's Ledger.

Seraphina stood beside him, her violet eyes glinting as she checked her silver clipboard. "The RushUnlock algorithm is performing flawlessly, Principal Thorne. By replacing all physical dungeon keys with our proprietary digital locks, we control the exact moment of access."

"A physical key is a massive loss of potential revenue, Seraphina," Victor said smoothly, adjusting his midnight-blue cuffs. "If a hero finds a key in a chest, they can open the door for free. We cannot allow unauthorized, un-monetized entry to our Safe Rooms."

Victor tapped his gold-nibbed pen against the Ledger.

"Furthermore," Victor smiled a cold, calculating smile. "Safety is a premium commodity. The closer the monster gets, the more valuable the door becomes. Let the spiders get within exactly ten feet, then double the fee again."

Down in the dungeon, as the lead spider leaped through the air, Leo was forced to accept a predatory micro-loan to pay a 30,000-Token fee. The RushUnlock scanner dinged cheerfully, sliding the doors open just in time. The heroes collapsed inside, physically safe, but financially ruined by a single door handle.
