The rain continued to pour over Sakura Blossom High as the four friends stood in complete silence. Ethan stared at the silver key resting in his palm. It felt colder than the brass key, almost as if it had never belonged in human hands. Principal Walker's final words echoed through his mind.
"The truth has been searching for you."
Before Ethan could ask another question, the principal turned toward the staircase.
"You have until tomorrow evening."
Everyone looked confused.
"What happens tomorrow?" Elena asked.
"The Autumn Festival begins."
"And once the festival starts..."
The principal paused.
"...the archive will seal itself again."
Without another word, he walked away. Lucas followed him but stopped near the staircase.
He looked back at Ethan.
"If you decide to enter the archive..."
"...don't trust what you see first."
Then he disappeared into the darkness.
For several seconds, none of them moved.
Finally, Noah broke the silence.
"I don't know about you guys, but every adult in this school speaks like they're competing to be mysterious."
Olivia sighed.
"At least one of them could answer a question normally."
Ethan slipped both keys into his pocket.
"We're going tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" Elena asked.
"We barely know what's down there."
"Exactly."
"And that's why we have to go."
---
That night, Ethan couldn't sleep.
The rain tapped softly against his bedroom window while Daniel's journal lay open across his desk. He read every page again, hoping he had missed something.
Near the end of the journal, a folded piece of paper slipped onto the floor.
He frowned.
"I've never seen this before."
Carefully unfolding it, he found a rough pencil sketch of Sakura Blossom High.
Someone had circled the old clock tower and drawn an arrow leading beneath it.
Below the drawing, Daniel had written only one sentence.
**"Some doors aren't opened by keys... they're opened by memories."**
Ethan stared at the words.
"What does that even mean?"
Just then, his phone vibrated.
A message from Elena.
**"I can't sleep either."**
A few seconds later another message appeared.
**"I keep thinking about Daniel."**
Ethan smiled faintly before typing back.
**"Tomorrow we'll finally get answers."**
Her reply came almost instantly.
**"Or more questions."**
He couldn't argue with that.
---
The next morning the school buzzed with excitement. Students hurried through the hallways carrying festival decorations, laughing as they argued over stage performances and food stalls. It was impossible to believe that beneath the same campus lay a forgotten archive hidden for two decades.
Mrs. Anderson entered the classroom carrying several colorful posters.
"Good morning, everyone! Since tomorrow is the Autumn Festival, today's classes will finish early. After lunch, all students must help with the preparations."
The classroom erupted with cheers.
Everyone looked excited.
Everyone except Ethan, Elena, Noah and Olivia.
They exchanged silent glances.
They already had their own plans.
---
By late afternoon, the campus was nearly empty.
Music from the rehearsal stage echoed faintly across the grounds as the four friends quietly made their way toward the clock tower.
Dark clouds once again gathered above the school.
Noah looked at the sky.
"Has anyone noticed that it always rains whenever we investigate something?"
Olivia smiled.
"Maybe even the weather is trying to warn us."
"Great."
"That's exactly what I wanted to hear."
They reached the old iron gate.
This time, it was already open.
Ethan frowned.
"I locked it yesterday."
Elena looked uneasy.
"So who unlocked it?"
Nobody answered.
They climbed the spiral staircase once more until they reached the room beneath the giant clock.
Everything looked exactly as they had left it.
Except...
The pocket watch was gone.
"What?" Olivia whispered.
"It was right here."
Ethan searched the wooden table.
Nothing.
Not even a mark where it had been.
Instead...
A single envelope rested in its place.
Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were four words.
**For Ethan Carter Only.**
A cold breeze swept through the room.
Noah stepped back.
"Okay..."
"That's officially terrifying."
Ethan slowly picked up the envelope.
It wasn't old.
The paper looked almost new.
His hands trembled slightly as he opened it.
Inside was a short letter.
**"If you're reading this, it means you reached the tower before they did."**
Ethan's breathing slowed.
Daniel.
It had to be Daniel.
He continued reading.
**"Do not enter the archive until all four of you are standing together."**
Olivia frowned.
"But we are."
Ethan turned the page over.
One final sentence had been written on the back.
**"If even one person is missing..."**
**"...someone else will take their place."**
The room fell completely silent.
Almost instinctively, all four friends looked at one another.
Noah.
Olivia.
Elena.
Ethan.
They were all there.
Then...
A fifth voice echoed softly from behind them.
"Perfect."
They turned around instantly.
Lucas Reed stood quietly at the entrance.
But this time...
He wasn't smiling.
Instead, he held another silver key in his hand.
Exactly like the one Principal Walker had given Ethan.
