Chapter 31 - BENEATH THE FINAL BELL

The metallic sound echoed beneath Sakura Blossom High, vibrating through the old clock tower as though the entire building had been asleep for decades and had finally awakened. The giant clock hand moved only a single minute, yet that tiny movement changed everything. Dust rained from the ceiling while the ancient gears slowly turned for the first time in twenty years.

Noah instinctively stepped back. "Please tell me that wasn't supposed to happen."

No one answered.

Even Principal James Walker stared at the moving clock in disbelief. Whatever he had expected, this wasn't it.

Ethan's eyes remained fixed on the principal.

"You knew this would happen, didn't you?"

Principal Walker let out a long sigh. For the first time since Ethan had joined Sakura Blossom High, he no longer looked like the strict head of the school. Instead, he looked like a man who had been carrying the same burden for far too long.

"I knew this day would come," he admitted quietly. "I only hoped none of you would be here to witness it."

Elena stepped forward.

"Then stop hiding the truth."

The principal remained silent for a few seconds before speaking again.

"Twenty years ago, this school wasn't known for its festivals or academic excellence. It was known because four students uncovered something they were never meant to find."

Everyone listened without interrupting.

"Daniel Carter wasn't alone," he continued. "Three others stood beside him. They believed they could expose the truth hidden inside this school."

Lucas slowly lowered his eyes.

"My brother was one of them."

The others immediately turned toward him.

"My older brother... Adrian Reed."

Olivia looked stunned.

"You never told us."

"There was nothing to tell," Lucas replied softly. "By the time I was old enough to understand, everyone who knew the truth had already chosen silence."

Noah frowned.

"So Daniel, Adrian... who were the other two?"

"The first was Emma Collins," the principal answered. "She was the smartest student in her class."

"And the fourth?"

Principal Walker hesitated.

"The fourth student disappeared from every official record."

"What do you mean?" Ethan asked.

"I mean every photograph was altered... every document was destroyed... and every person who spoke that student's name suddenly refused to talk."

A cold silence settled over the tower.

Someone had erased an entire person from history.

Ethan remembered the old class photograph Elena's grandfather had shown them.

The scratched-out face.

It wasn't damaged by accident.

Someone had wanted that student to disappear forever.

Before anyone could ask another question, another loud metallic sound echoed beneath their feet.

This time, it felt much closer.

The floor vibrated gently.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Principal Walker immediately looked toward the staircase.

"We have to leave."

Ethan didn't move.

"I'm not leaving."

The principal's expression hardened.

"You don't understand what lies beneath this tower."

"Then explain it."

"I can't."

"Or you won't?"

The question lingered between them.

Finally, Principal Walker closed his eyes.

"Beneath Sakura Blossom High is an underground archive."

"The archive contains everything the world was never supposed to see. Student records... photographs... letters... newspaper reports... even police files."

Noah blinked.

"Wait... police files?"

"Yes."

Olivia slowly folded her arms.

"So Daniel wasn't just a missing student."

"No."

"He was investigating something."

Principal Walker nodded.

"And he got closer to the truth than anyone else."

Ethan looked toward the slowly moving gears above them.

"So Room 117 wasn't the destination."

"It was only the first door."

Lucas finally spoke again.

"The archive has remained sealed for twenty years."

Elena looked at him.

"Then why is it opening now?"

Lucas met Ethan's eyes.

"Because the school finally found another Carter."

Those words sent a chill through everyone.

For a brief moment, no one spoke.

The only sound was the steady ticking of the old pocket watch resting in Elena's hand.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Suddenly, Ethan's backpack began shaking.

Everyone stared.

Confused, he unzipped it.

Daniel's journal had opened by itself.

Its pages flipped rapidly until they stopped on a page none of them had seen before.

Across the yellowed paper, written in dark blue ink, were only two lines.

**"If the clock begins to move..."**

**"...the archive has already chosen its next keeper."**

Noah swallowed nervously.

"I officially miss normal homework."

Even Olivia couldn't hide her fear anymore.

Ethan slowly closed the journal.

His hands were trembling slightly.

Not because he was afraid.

But because, for the first time, he realized this mystery wasn't following him by coincidence.

It had been waiting for him.

Principal Walker reached inside his coat and removed an old silver key attached to a worn leather strap.

Unlike the brass key, this one looked polished, as though someone had protected it for years.

He placed it carefully into Ethan's hand.

"This key opens the underground archive."

Ethan looked at him in surprise.

"I thought you wanted to stop me."

"I did."

"Then why give it to me?"

The principal smiled sadly.

"Because after seeing the clock move..."

"...I finally understood something."

"What?"

"You were never searching for the truth."

A flash of lightning illuminated the tower.

Outside, heavy rain began crashing against the ancient windows.

Principal Walker looked directly into Ethan's eyes and quietly finished his sentence.

"The truth..."

"...has been searching for you."
