Chapter 20 - Scars of the Past

Years may pass… but hatred never fades.

Time did not heal Alex.

It only hardened him.

The man who once laughed freely now lived like a shadow of himself. His wife's death had carved a hollow space inside him—one that nothing, not even time, could fill. The warmth in his eyes had long since faded, replaced by something colder… something unbreakable.

Yet, in that coldness, one thing remained—

His children.

If the world had taken everything from him, then he would make sure it took nothing from them.

Love, for Alex, was no longer gentle.

It was survival.

He trained them not with affection, but with preparation.

Every lesson, every command, every silent expectation carried the same message:

Be strong… or be destroyed.

But not all wounds healed the same way.

Rowan carried his pain like a burning fire in his chest.

Hatred.

Raw. Consuming. Unforgiving.

He blamed his father for everything—for the silence in the house, for the emptiness, for the absence of the woman who once held them together.

For their mother.

Every word Alex spoke sounded like control.

Every action felt like punishment.

So Rowan pushed harder, acted wilder, took risks just to be seen… just to be acknowledged.

But deep down—

He wasn't trying to earn his father's approval.

He was preparing to destroy him.

Arabella, however, was different.

Where Rowan burned, she endured.

Years of bullying had taught her one thing—being weak was a luxury she could no longer afford. Every insult, every shove, every moment of helplessness had built something inside her.

Not hatred.

But determination.

So one day, she stood before her father.

Her hands trembled slightly… but her eyes did not.

"I want to learn."

The words were simple.

But they carried the weight of everything she had suffered.

For a moment, silence filled the room.

Alex studied her—really studied her.

Then, something unexpected happened.

The ice around his heart… cracked.

Just a little.

A faint smile touched his lips, rough and unfamiliar.

"Fine," he said, his voice low and gruff. "I'll get you a trainer."

And just like that—

Everything changed.

Arabella's world became one of discipline, pain, and growth.

Her trainer, Atterra, was as intimidating as she was skilled—a woman shaped by battle, yet softened by quiet understanding. She saw through Arabella immediately.

The fear.

The desperation.

The need to become more.

So she took her in—not just as a student, but as someone worth shaping.

Training was not easy.

It never was.

Muscles burned.

Hands blistered.

Failures came again and again.

But Arabella didn't quit.

She couldn't.

Because every drop of sweat brought her closer to becoming someone who could never be hurt again.

Days turned into weeks.

Weeks into months.

And slowly—

The girl who once lowered her head began to stand tall.

Her posture straightened.

Her voice gained strength.

And her eyes…

Her eyes no longer carried fear.

They carried fire.

She learned to wield a bow, her arrows slicing through the air with growing precision.

She learned to handle a gun, her hands steady where they once trembled.

She learned to fight.

To survive.

To become dangerous.

And through it all—

Alex watched.

Silent.

Observing.

Proud.

Though he would never say it out loud.

But while one child was rising—

The other was falling deeper into darkness.

Rowan watched everything.

Arabella's progress.

Their father's attention.

The quiet approval in his eyes.

And it made something inside him twist violently.

The anger he carried began to grow sharper… colder.

More dangerous.

Because now, it wasn't just about the past anymore.

It was about the present.

About being replaced.

Forgotten.

Discarded.

The distance between father and son widened with every passing day.

Words became rare.

Tension became constant.

And silence…

Silence became unbearable.

Two children.

One driven by growth.

The other by revenge.

And in the middle of it all—

A father who had no idea that the greatest threat to his life…

Was living under his own roof.

Ending Hook:

One child is becoming a weapon… while the other is becoming the one who will pull the trigger.
