Chapter 35 - A Seat at the Table

Respect Is Given… But Power Must Be Taken

The warehouse no longer smelled like blood.

Now—

It smelled like victory.

Laughter echoed across the room as bottles clinked and men who had once been silent shadows now spoke freely. The tension of battle had been replaced with something else—

Relief.

Respect.

And rising ambition.

At the center of it all stood Ryan.

Still.

Quiet.

Watching.

Don Alessandro stepped forward, a rare smile on his face. He clapped Ryan firmly on the back.

"Good, boy," he said. "You dragged Maxwell back here like it was nothing."

A few men nodded in agreement.

"You're learning fast… handling business."

Ryan gave a small nod but said nothing.

His silence didn't go unnoticed.

In fact—

It made them respect him more.

Don Alessandro turned to the others, raising his hand slightly.

"You all saw what happened tonight," he said. "This is what loyalty looks like."

Murmurs spread across the room.

Some approving.

Some cautious.

Some… jealous.

Victor stepped forward, handing Ryan a glass of whiskey.

"Here," he said. "You earned it."

Ryan took it without hesitation this time.

Don Alessandro raised his own glass high.

The room quieted instantly.

"To Ryan," he announced,

"the newest member of our family."

A pause.

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"May your loyalty be rewarded…"

Then, colder—

"…and your enemies tremble."

The men raised their glasses.

"To Ryan!"

The toast echoed loudly.

Ryan lifted his glass and took a slow sip.

The burn was sharp.

Grounding.

Real.

Unlike everything else.

Applause followed, but not everyone clapped.

From the side of the room—

A voice cut through.

"He got lucky."

Silence dropped instantly.

All heads turned.

A man stepped forward.

Tall. Broad. Eyes filled with quiet resentment.

Sofia.

Not the kind to laugh or celebrate.

The kind who watched.

Measured.

Calculated.

Don Alessandro's smile faded slightly.

"Say that again," he said calmly.

Sofia didn't hesitate.

"I said he got lucky."

The tension in the room thickened.

Ryan's gaze shifted toward her.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just… steady.

Sofia crossed her arms.

"You threw him into a fight he barely survived," she continued. "Now you're treating him like he's proven something."

A few men exchanged looks.

Dangerous territory.

Don Alessandro stepped closer.

"And what do you think he should prove?" he asked.

Sofia's eyes flicked back to Ryan.

Then back to Alessandro.

"Consistency."

A beat of silence.

Then—

Ryan spoke.

Calm.

Controlled.

"What do you want?"

The question caught everyone off guard.

Sofia raised an eyebrow slightly.

"A test," she said simply.

Now the room was fully locked in.

Don Alessandro smiled slowly.

"There it is…" he murmured.

Ryan took another sip of his drink, then set the glass down.

"Fine," he said.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Just acceptance.

Sofia studied him carefully.

As if trying to find a crack.

There wasn't one.

"Tomorrow," she said. "You and me."

The challenge hung in the air.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Don Alessandro chuckled softly.

"Looks like the celebration just turned into something more interesting."

He looked at Ryan.

"Don't disappoint me."

Ryan met his gaze.

"I won't."

The room slowly came back to life.

But something had changed.

This wasn't just celebration anymore.

It was a warning.

Ryan had earned a place—

But not everyone was ready to give it to him.A Seat at the Table
