Chapter 8 - An Unexpected Defense

The boardroom was silent, heavy with authority and power. Long glass windows stretched from floor to ceiling, overlooking the city, while a polished table sat at the center—surrounded by some of the most influential men and women in the company.

Isabella stood quietly at the side, tablet in hand, taking notes as instructed. This was her first time attending a board meeting, and she had been warned—strictly—about the rules.

No interruptions.

No mistakes.

No distractions.

Her phone was supposed to be off.

But in her rush that morning… she had forgotten.

The meeting was deep in discussion when suddenly—

Her phone rang.

The sharp sound cut through the room like a blade.

Every head turned.

Isabella's heart dropped instantly. Her breath caught as she quickly reached for her phone, silencing it, her fingers trembling slightly.

"I'm so sorry… I deeply apologize," she said, her voice low but filled with panic.

A cold, irritated voice broke through the silence.

"This is unacceptable."

All eyes shifted to Mr. Lucas—a man in his late fifties, known for his harsh demeanor and lack of patience. His sharp glare was fixed on Isabella like she had committed an unforgivable crime.

"Do you even understand where you are?" he snapped. "This is a board meeting, not some playground for careless girls!"

Isabella swallowed hard, her hands tightening around her tablet. "I'm very sorry, sir. It won't happen again—"

"Sorry?" he cut her off harshly. "Sorry doesn't fix incompetence. This is exactly why inexperienced people shouldn't be allowed in rooms like this. You're an embarrassment."

The words hit harder than she expected.

The room remained silent. No one spoke. No one intervened.

Isabella lowered her gaze, humiliation creeping up her chest, but she forced herself to stay composed. "I take full responsibility, sir."

But before Mr. Lucas could continue—

A chair scraped sharply against the floor.

Alexander Knight stood up.

The entire room stilled.

His expression was cold, but his eyes burned with something far more intense. Something dangerous.

"That's enough."

His voice was calm—but deadly.

Mr. Lucas frowned. "Mr. Knight, with all due respect, your assistant—"

"I said enough," Alexander repeated, his tone firmer this time.

He stepped forward slightly, his presence immediately commanding the room.

"She made a mistake," he said, his gaze sharp. "A minor one. And she has already apologized."

Mr. Lucas scoffed. "Minor? This is a breach of professionalism—"

Alexander's eyes darkened.

"And yet," he cut in smoothly, "I don't recall giving anyone permission to insult my staff."

The room fell into a deeper silence.

Isabella's heart skipped.

"If there's an issue with her," Alexander continued, his voice steady but laced with authority, "then it will be addressed by me. Not through unnecessary humiliation."

Mr. Lucas stiffened, clearly displeased, but said nothing more.

Alexander turned slightly, his gaze briefly landing on Isabella. For a split second, something softened—but it disappeared just as quickly.

"Turn off your phone," he said quietly.

"Yes, sir," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

He nodded once, then returned to his seat as if nothing had happened.

But everything had changed.

The meeting continued, but Isabella could barely focus. Her mind replayed the moment over and over again—his voice, his defense, the way he had shut down Mr. Lucas without hesitation.

He didn't have to do that.

After the meeting ended, the room slowly emptied. Isabella gathered her things, still trying to process what had just happened.

As she turned to leave, Alexander's voice stopped her.

"Isabella."

She turned. "Yes, Mr. Knight?"

He looked at her for a moment, his expression unreadable.

"Don't let it happen again," he said.

A pause.

Then, more quietly—

"And don't let anyone speak to you like that again."

Isabella's breath caught slightly. "Yes… sir."

She walked out of the room, her heart beating faster than it should.

Because for the first time…

She didn't just see her boss.

She saw the man behind the cold exterior.

And somehow, that made everything more complicated.
