Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Somehow, I Became a Bodhisattva

Your name is Hikigaya Hachiman. You are 18 years old now.

You have everything most men would kill for: a stunningly beautiful girlfriend, a perfect sister-in-law, and a very understanding mother-in-law.

All three of them are drop-dead gorgeous, with bodies and faces that turn heads wherever they go. They never run out of suitors.

Men stare at them constantly—openly lusting after their curves, their legs, their breasts, their asses.

You see it in their eyes every single day.

It doesn't annoy you anymore. It's just common sense. Beautiful women like them are natural magnets for men who think with nothing but their dicks.

The driver, the gardener, even Hayama Hayato—the golden boy everyone loves—can't hide the raw hunger in his eyes whenever he looks at your sister-in-law, Haruno Yukinoshita. From teenagers to middle-aged men to old perverts, you can read their filthy thoughts just from the way they stare.

Their eyes always give them away.

After all, the eyes are the windows to the soul.

Except yours.

Your dead-fish eyes hide everything perfectly, unlike the rest of these transparent idiots.

Sometimes you wonder if you were born in the wrong world. If this were the Nasuverse, you would have already awakened the Mystic Eyes of Death and slaughtered every last one of their lustful gazes on the spot, granting them instant enlightenment.

Lust really is bad for your health, after all.

Yeah, you're not the original Hachiman. You're a reborn soul inside his body.

And like any reborn person with proper common sense, you refused to follow the canon plot or waste years waiting for some half-assed happy ending.

You took action early. You met Yukino Yukinoshita back in elementary school and becoming her childhood friend.

You attended the same school, stayed close to her, and made sure things turned out the way you wanted.

Back then, Yukino was bullied mercilessly by her entire class. Both girls and boys hated her. They hid her shoes, stole her belongings, and openly mocked her in front of everyone.

She was basically the enemy of every girl in class—they couldn't stand how she stole all the boys' attention without even trying.

The boys, on the other hand, had massive crushes on her. They were too cowardly to confess, so they pulled stupid, clumsy pranks just to get her to notice them.

It was immature and pathetic. Nothing but a waste of time that ended up traumatizing a young girl.

Of course, when those boys didn't get the reaction they wanted—when Yukino gave them the cold shoulder and completely ignored them—their fragile male egos shattered. Hurt pride turned them into bitter haters instead.

They started harassing her nonstop, teaming up with most of the girls in class to make her life hell.

Hayama Hayato, the so-called golden boy and Yukino's original childhood friend, chose the masses instead of standing by her. He didn't join the bullying, but he didn't stop it either. He simply pretended not to know her and let the harassment grow worse and worse.

You, on the other hand, stepped in without hesitation. You completely replaced Hayama's role in her life and took over as her true childhood friend.

Unlike Hayato, who always cared too much about what others thought, you didn't give a damn. You beat the shit out of every boy and girl who bullied Yukino, turning the incident into such a massive scandal that the school could no longer cover it up.

From that day on, your own classmates, teachers, and even the entire school hated you. But the bullies didn't get away with it either.

The Yukinoshita family— the biggest donors to the school and the uncrowned rulers of Chiba—refused to tolerate their daughter being victimized while the school did nothing. They came down hard. The perpetrators were punished severely, and Hayama Hayato was strictly forbidden from ever approaching Yukino again.

For the first time in her life, Yukino Yukinoshita—who was usually cold, arrogant, and difficult with everyone—opened her heart to you. She warmed up noticeably and thanked you in person.

"Thank you, Hikigaya-kun… for standing up for me, even if it meant everyone would hate you. That took real courage."

"Is that why you never fought back and just endured it all silently?" you asked, genuinely curious.

She snorted softly, more at them than at you. "I didn't fight back because there was no point wasting my time on weak, fragile people like them. Still… I'm grateful. That's all I wanted to say, Hikigaya-kun. Please don't do something like that again. Everyone hates you now. I don't want you destroying yourself for me. Just… avoid me if you can."

"You're mistaken, Yukino," you replied sincerely. "I wasn't self-destructing. I did it because I could. I hated how they ganged up on a powerless girl just because of petty jealousy and bruised egos. That's pathetic. I didn't like them, so I beat them. Simple as that."

Her sharp eyes searched your face for any sign of a lie, but she found none—only pure sincerity.

In a world full of lies and fake smiles, real sincerity was incredibly rare. Her heart couldn't help but tremble at it.

From that day onward, something began to sprout inside the young girl's heart—feelings that shouldn't have existed yet.

You, however, didn't notice any of that. You were just quietly relieved that she didn't withdraw into herself or shut her heart away because of the bullying incident.

That was how you met her in the past and slowly won her heart.

Years later, after she returned from her studies in England, Yukino confessed to you.

That was how the two of you became boyfriend and girlfriend.

You drove Yukino to school. This was both of your first day enrolling at Chiba Academy, and you wanted everything to go perfectly for her.

The world, however, had other plans.

A dog suddenly darted into the middle of the road. You slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. The car hit the dog hard. It died instantly.

A pink-haired girl screamed in heartbreak. Yukino sat frozen in shock beside you. Your own heart raced for a second, then seemed to stop completely. For some reason, your consciousness plunged into darkness.

A young girl with pink twin-tails appeared in front of you and exclaimed, "You killed Buddha? Holy shit, you killed one of the top gods on your very first day? Congratulations, son. You are a Campione now."

"The dog you killed was actually the reincarnation of Buddha," she added, noticing your stunned, stiff expression. She coughed awkwardly. "Ahem… I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Pandora, the Mother of Campiones. Nice to meet you, Hikigaya Hachiman. My son."

"I killed Buddha… and my classmate's dog?" You panicked, but not because of the god part. The guilt hit you like a truck—the fact that you had just killed Yui's dog in a car accident.

Your face turned pale. Instead of feeling any pride at becoming a Campione, your heart was eaten alive by guilt.

You had murdered your classmate's dog.

That fact could never be erased.

Pandora saw your reaction and said nothing at first. She simply stayed by your side, her presence quietly comforting you.

"What a good boy you are," she said softly. "You can rest here as long as you need. Just relax, son."

You stayed silent and closed your eyes, forcing yourself to calm down.

When you opened them again, your gaze was no longer hesitant. It was firm as you looked at your new mother. "Mother Pandora, let me return. Whatever happened out there, I want to face it. She doesn't deserve this, and neither did her dog. I bear responsibility for it."

Pandora smiled apologetically. "Okay, Hikigaya-kun. I'm sorry too. I forgot that not every Campione is heartless. There are still good ones like you. I shouldn't have treated this like a celebration."

"It should be me apologizing. I brought the mood down," you sighed.

She stepped closer, gently pulled your head against her soft chest, and stroked your hair tenderly. "Hush… Don't worry. I will take care of the dog, Hikigaya-kun. He may no longer carry Buddha's soul, but he will become the best companion for your classmate as compensation. So please don't be sad or guilty anymore, okay? As your mother—even if we've only just met—that's what I can do for you."

"Thank you, Mother," you nodded gratefully.

"Now, return to the surface, Hikigaya-kun. Face them. Be brave. You are a Campione now."

You nodded firmly. Pandora leaned in and placed a soft kiss on your forehead. Your consciousness returned to the real world, your eyes opening to see Yukino staring at you with clear concern in her gaze.
