Chapter 4 - Chap 4: Dorm of the Damned

Chapter 4: Dorm of the Damned

They ran.

Not just to escape

But to survive.

The campus they once knew was gone.

Completely.

Ridge University had turned into a graveyard in less than an hour.

The football field - once roaring with cheers and pride - was now soaked in blood. Bodies lay scattered across the grass. Some still.

Some… not.

The sound of bones snapping echoed somewhere behind them.

A wet, tearing noise followed.

Then screaming.

Then silence.

Alex didn't look back.

He couldn't.

Because if he did

He might hesitate.

And hesitation meant death.

"Left!" Elara's voice cut through the chaos.

Sharp.

Focused.

Alex didn't question it.

His body reacted instantly, pivoting as a creature lunged from the side. Its fingers barely missed his shoulder as he slipped past it with unnatural speed.

He was faster now.

Much faster.

It wasn't just adrenaline anymore.

It was something else.

Something growing.

Every step felt lighter.

Every movement sharper.

Like his body had been unlocked from its limits.

Behind him ,

Elara moved just as fluidly.

But where Alex was speed and force,

She was silence and shadow.

The creatures that got too close to her didn't last long.

They didn't even scream.

Darkness seemed to cling to her movements, wrapping around her hands, slipping into the cracks of the world itself.

Alex noticed it.

Even while running.

Even while fighting.

He noticed her.

And it made something inside him tighten.

Not fear.

Not uncertainty.

Possession.

Connection.

Something deeper than both.

Ahead,

The athletes' dorm loomed into view.

Tall.

Concrete.

Still standing.

For now.

"Almost there!" Alex muttered.

But getting there wouldn't be easy.

A cluster of infected blocked the entrance.

Six.

No....

Eight.

All moving erratically.

Some dragging limbs.

Others twitching unnaturally.

And one,

Standing still.

Watching.

"Don't slow down," Elara said quietly.

"I won't."

Alex didn't hesitate.

He charged.

The first one lunged.

Too slow.

Alex ducked under its arms and drove his elbow into its skull.

CRACK.

It dropped instantly.

The second came from the side,

He grabbed it by the throat.

And slammed it into another.

The impact sent both crashing to the ground.

His strength,

Was increasing.

He could feel it.

The third —

The fourth —

They came all at once.

And this time,

That power returned.

Golden light flickered across his hands.

Not fully formed

But there.

Alive.

Reacting.

He swung.

And the moment his fist connected,

The creature's body folded.

Like it had been hit by something far heavier than flesh.

Alex froze for half a second.

That wasn't normal.

But there was no time to process it.

"Behind you!"

Elara's voice snapped him back.

He turned,

Just as the still one moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

It lunged straight for him.

But before it could reach,

Something dark shot past him.

A blur.

A shadow.

It wrapped around the creature's neck,

And snapped it sideways.

The body dropped.

Dead..

Elara stood behind it.

Her hand still slightly raised.

Shadows curling around her fingers before slowly fading.

Alex stared.

"…You did that without touching it."

Elara didn't deny it.

Didn't explain it either.

"We're running out of time."

He nodded.

No more questions.

Not now.

Together — they pushed forward.

The dorm doors were reinforced.

Chained.

Barricaded from the inside.

Alex slammed his fist against it.

"Open up!"

Silence.

Then movement.

Shuffling.

Whispers.

"…It could be them," someone muttered from inside.

"We're not infected!" Alex snapped.

Another pause.

Then,

The chains rattled.

The door cracked open just enough.

A pair of terrified eyes peeked through.

Then widened.

"Ace?"

The door flew open.

And the moment Alex stepped inside,

Everything changed.

The door slammed shut behind them.

Chains locked.

Furniture pushed back into place.

The noise outside muffled,

But not gone.

Never gone.

Inside,

About a dozen survivors.

Students.

Athletes.

Some injured.

Some shaking.

Some already broken.

And then....

Mia.

She pushed through the crowd the moment she saw him.

"Ace!"

She ran straight into him.

Wrapped her arms around him tightly.

"You're alive!"

Her voice cracked.

Relief.

Fear.

Emotion spilling out all at once.

"I thought—you—"

She couldn't finish.

Alex stiffened slightly.

Not because of her.

But because,

He felt it.

The shift.

The tension.

Behind him.

Elara.

He glanced back.

And saw it immediately.

The shadows around her hands —

Tightening.

Curling.

Reacting.

Her expression didn't change.

But her eyes,

Darkened.

And that was enough.

Without hesitation,

He moved.

Not away from Elara,

But toward her.

He gently but firmly pulled her closer.

Close enough that there was no misunderstanding.

No confusion.

"Careful," he said calmly.

His voice steady.

Controlled.

But carrying weight.

"I've got someone who doesn't like sharing."

Silence.

The room went still.

Mia froze.

Her arms slowly loosened.

Her expression shifted.

Confusion.

Then realization.

Then something else.

"…Oh."

The air changed.

Not just awkward.

Not just tense.

Dangerous.

Everyone felt it.

No one spoke.

Because something was off.

Not just the situation,

But them.

Alex.

Elara.

They didn't feel like normal survivors.

They felt like something else.

Something stronger.

Something unpredictable.

Mia stepped back slowly.

Her gaze flicked between them.

Trying to understand.

Trying to process.

But there was no time.

Not in this world.

Not anymore.

Later —

Behind a closed door.

The noise of the dorm dulled into the background.

Murmurs.

Whispers.

Fear.

But inside this room,

There was only tension.

Elara stood near the window.

Watching the outside.

Watching the chaos.

Alex closed the door behind him.

The click echoed louder than it should have.

She didn't turn.

Didn't speak.

But he could feel it.

That energy again.

Stronger than before.

More focused.

More dangerous.

He took a step closer.

Then another.

"You're quiet," he said.

Still nothing.

Then,

Suddenly,

She moved.

Fast.

Too fast to react.

One second she was across the room,

The next,

She had him.

Hands on his chest,

Pushing him back.

He hit the bed.

Hard.

Before he could react

She was on him.

Straddling him.

Her eyes darker now.

That faint glow returning.

"Was she important?" she asked.

Her voice was soft.

But there was something underneath it.

Something sharp.

Something territorial.

Alex blinked.

Then,

He smirked.

Just slightly.

"Not like you."

The effect was instant.

Something shifted.

Flared.

The air grew heavy.

Their connection,

Exploded.

Not physically.

Not visibly.

But felt.

Like two forces colliding.

Merging.

Reacting.

Every nerve in Alex's body lit up.

That same energy from before,

But stronger.

Deeper.

It coursed through him.

Through her.

Between them.

Like a bridge had formed.

Linking them.

Beyond logic.

Beyond understanding.

He could feel her.

Not just touch,

But emotion.

Intensity.

Darkness.

Power.

Elara inhaled sharply.

Her fingers tightened slightly on his shirt.

"You feel that…" she whispered.

Alex didn't answer.

Because he did.

Too clearly.

Too intensely.

It wasn't normal.

It wasn't human.

It was something else entirely.

And then,

It peaked.

A surge.

A pulse.

A silent explosion between them.

Then—

It faded.

Slowly.

Like a storm passing.

Leaving behind something new.

Something permanent.

Elara stilled.

Her gaze dropped.

To his collarbone.

Alex followed her eyes.

And saw it.

A mark.

Faint.

Like a symbol burned just beneath the skin.

Dark and gold intertwined.

Alive.

"…What is that?" he muttered.

Elara reached out slowly.

Her fingers brushed against it.

The moment she touched it,

The mark pulsed.

Once.

Reacting.

To her.

Her expression shifted.

For the first time,

There was hesitation.

"This…" she whispered.

"…this shouldn't have happened yet."

Alex looked at her.

"Explain."

She hesitated.

Then exhaled slowly.

"My bloodline started this."

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Ancient.

"A curse sealed long ago…" she continued softly.

"…now broken."

Silence filled the room.

Alex didn't react immediately.

Didn't pull away.

He sat up slightly.

His gaze steady.

Locked onto hers.

"Then we end it."

Elara blinked.

Surprised.Something softer flickered in her expression. But it didn't last.

Because...

A scream tore through the hallway. Sharp.

Terrified.

Familiar.

"Mia…"

Alex was already moving.

The door swung open.

Chaos greeted him instantly.

Students running.

Shouting.

Panic spreading like wildfire.

"The dead—they're inside!"

Mia's voice cut through everything.

"And they're… talking!"

Alex stopped.

Just for a second.

"…Talking?"

That wasn't possible.

Was it?

A low voice echoed from down the hallway.

Broken.

Distorted.

But clear.

"Hun…gry…"

Another voice followed.

"…come… out…"

Alex's grip tightened.

His pulse spiked.

No.

This wasn't normal.

This wasn't infection anymore.

This was evolution.

Behind him,

Darkness spread.

Elara stepped out.

Shadows rising from the floor like living things.

Meeting the golden light now flickering around Alex's hands.

Opposites.

Yet connected.

He glanced back at her.

A small,

Dangerous smile forming.

"Ready?"

Her lips curved into something dark.

"Always."

Ahead,

The hallway twisted into chaos.

Doors slammed.

Walls scratched.

Voices whispered.

The dead were no longer just mindless.

They were learning.

Adapting.

Becoming something worse.

Alex stepped forward,Elara beside him.

Shadows alive.

And together,

They walked toward the nightmare.

Not as survivors.

But as something far more dangerous.
