Chapter 7 - The Second Evolution

Chapter 7: The Second Evolution

The moment Lin Yu's eyes opened, the air in the corridor changed completely, as if an invisible pressure had descended, pressing down on everything within range, while the remaining moisture in the environment trembled violently, no longer calm or obedient, but restless, almost chaotic. His pupils had darkened, a faint blue glow flickering deep within them, and the blood flowing from his shoulder slowed unnaturally before stopping altogether, as though his body itself had begun adapting under the influence of the new power.

Su Yan froze where she stood, her breath caught in her throat as she looked at him, because the presence coming from Lin Yu was no longer something she could easily understand. It was not just stronger, but deeper, heavier, like standing before something vast and unpredictable. For a brief moment, fear surfaced in her heart, not because she thought he would hurt her, but because she realized he might not even realize what he was doing.

Lin Yu did not move immediately. His body remained still, but inside him, everything was changing. The violent energy that had surged from the core was no longer rampaging blindly; it was being pulled inward, compressed, refined. The chaotic flow of water he sensed before was gradually stabilizing, but in a completely different way than before. It was no longer just something he controlled. It felt like something that belonged to him, something that moved with his thoughts even before he consciously commanded it.

He slowly raised his hand. The air in front of him twisted slightly as countless microscopic droplets gathered instantly, forming a thin layer that shimmered faintly under the dim light. With a slight motion of his fingers, that layer condensed into a sharp, nearly invisible edge that extended forward, cutting cleanly through a fallen metal shelf several meters away without making a sound. The shelf split in half as if it had been sliced by something far sharper than steel.

Lin Yu stared at the result quietly, then clenched his hand, and the blade dissolved instantly back into mist. He could feel it clearly now. His control had advanced to a completely new level. Not just power, but precision. Not just manipulation, but perception. The water around him was no longer something external. It was part of his domain.

But at the same time, something else lingered.

That presence.

Deep inside him, there was still a faint trace of it, like a shadow hidden beneath the surface of calm water. It did not move, it did not speak, but it existed. Watching. Waiting.

Lin Yu's eyes narrowed slightly. He did not understand what it was yet, but one thing was certain—it had come from the core. And if he lost control, it would not remain silent.

"…I see," he murmured quietly, lowering his hand.

Behind him, Su Yan finally found her voice. She called his name softly, her tone filled with hesitation, unsure if the person in front of her was still the same boy who had saved her moments ago.

Lin Yu turned slightly, his gaze landing on her. For a brief moment, the faint glow in his eyes softened, and the oppressive pressure in the air weakened. He nodded once, signaling that he was still himself.

"I'm fine," he said calmly.

It was a simple statement, but it carried enough weight to ease some of the tension in her heart. Su Yan let out a small breath she didn't realize she had been holding, though the unease did not disappear completely.

Lin Yu shifted his attention back to the surroundings. The corridor was now filled with the remains of the battle, broken bodies and scattered debris marking the intensity of what had just occurred. But more importantly, it was quiet again. Too quiet.

He extended his senses outward once more, and this time, the range was significantly larger. The moisture in the air carried information back to him, forming a clearer map of the surrounding area than ever before. He could feel movement several streets away, scattered groups of zombies wandering aimlessly, but none immediately approaching. For now, they were safe.

But that would not last.

"This place isn't safe anymore," he said after a moment, his voice returning to its usual calm tone. "We leave before night fully falls."

Su Yan nodded quickly. She had already understood that staying in one place for too long was dangerous. With his help, she managed to stand again, her injured leg still weak but slightly better than before thanks to his earlier treatment.

As they moved toward the exit, Lin Yu paused briefly beside the body of the tallest mutated zombie. Its core had already been absorbed, but he could still sense the residual energy lingering faintly in the corpse. He looked at it for a moment, his expression unreadable.

"Stronger enemies… will keep appearing," he thought. "And each one will be harder than the last."

His gaze hardened slightly.

"But so will I."

Without another word, he turned and continued forward.

They exited through the back of the building, stepping into the narrow alley behind it. The sky had darkened significantly now, the last traces of daylight fading as night approached. The temperature dropped slightly, and the silence of the city grew heavier, more oppressive.

Lin Yu stopped for a moment and looked up. The clouds had begun to gather again.

Rain was coming.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

For others, rain meant discomfort, danger, and limited visibility.

But for him—

It meant power.

As the first drop fell, landing softly on the ground, Lin Yu's senses expanded instinctively, welcoming the change. The connection between him and the environment strengthened immediately, the surrounding water responding more actively to his presence.

He turned his gaze forward, his expression calm but determined.

"Let's go," he said.

Su Yan nodded and followed closely behind him.

They walked into the deepening darkness together, their figures gradually disappearing into the shadows of the ruined city.

Above them, the rain began to fall once more.

And somewhere far away—

Something stirred in response.

Something that had felt his evolution.

Something that was now… watching.
