Chapter 8: The Watcher in the Rain
The rain fell steadily as Lin Yu and Su Yan moved through the narrow alley, their footsteps softened by the growing curtain of water, while the city around them seemed to sink deeper into silence, as if even the dead had paused to listen. For Lin Yu, however, the rain did not obscure the world; it revealed it. Every drop became an extension of his awareness, spreading his perception across the surrounding streets, rooftops, and broken structures, forming a living map that shifted with every movement.
He could feel everything.
The scattered wanderings of ordinary zombies, slow and disorganized. The faint traces of movement from smaller mutated ones lurking in distant corners. Even the subtle changes in airflow and temperature carried through the rain. But among all of it, there was something else—something different.
Something watching.
Lin Yu's steps slowed slightly, his eyes narrowing as his senses focused in one direction. It was far, beyond the immediate range of his control, but the disturbance was unmistakable. Unlike the chaotic patterns of the infected, this presence was steady, controlled, and deliberate. It was not moving aimlessly. It was observing.
"…Do you feel that?" he asked quietly without turning back.
Su Yan blinked in confusion, tightening her grip slightly on her injured leg as she followed behind him. "Feel what?"
Lin Yu did not answer immediately. Instead, he extended his senses further, pushing against the edge of his current limit. The rain intensified, and with it, his connection strengthened, but the moment his awareness brushed against that distant presence—
It vanished.
Not faded.
Vanished.
As if it had deliberately withdrawn.
Lin Yu stopped completely now, standing still in the rain as water gathered faintly around him, reacting to the sudden tension in his mind. His expression remained calm, but his thoughts sharpened rapidly.
"It noticed me… and hid," he concluded silently. "That means it's intelligent."
And dangerous.
Very dangerous.
Behind him, Su Yan grew uneasy at his silence. "Lin Yu… what is it?" she asked, her voice carrying a trace of fear.
He turned slightly, the faint glow in his eyes softened again as he shook his head. "Nothing close," he said simply. "But we need to move faster."
He did not explain further. There was no need to burden her with something she could not sense or fight. What mattered now was distance.
They resumed moving, this time at a quicker pace despite Su Yan's injury. Lin Yu adjusted his support to make it easier for her, subtly guiding her steps while keeping his senses spread outward. The rain continued to fall, growing heavier, turning the streets into reflective surfaces that shimmered under faint, broken lights.
After some time, they reached a wider road lined with abandoned vehicles and damaged buildings. Lin Yu paused briefly, scanning the area carefully. This place was more exposed, but it also offered multiple escape routes. More importantly, he sensed something useful nearby.
Water.
Not just rainwater.
A larger source.
He shifted his direction slightly, leading Su Yan toward a partially collapsed building on the side of the road. Inside, the structure was unstable, but at the center of the ground floor, there was a broken water pipe, still leaking steadily despite everything that had happened.
Lin Yu's eyes lit up faintly.
"This will help," he said quietly.
He guided Su Yan to sit against a relatively stable wall before stepping closer to the leaking pipe. The moment he extended his hand, the flowing water responded instantly, rising into the air in smooth streams before gathering around him. Unlike the scattered droplets in the rain, this water was denser, more substantial, easier to manipulate and control.
He closed his eyes briefly.
Then—
The water expanded outward.
Not violently, but steadily, forming a thin layer that spread across the entire building, seeping into cracks, walls, and the floor. It connected everything within the structure, turning the building itself into an extension of his perception.
A base.
Temporary.
But effective.
Lin Yu opened his eyes again, a faint sense of stability settling within him.
"For now… we stay here," he said.
Su Yan nodded, her body clearly exhausted. The events of the day, combined with her injury, had drained her completely. She leaned back against the wall, her breathing slowing as she tried to relax, though her eyes remained on Lin Yu.
"You knew where to go…" she said softly. "Like you could see everything."
Lin Yu did not deny it. "Something like that," he replied calmly.
She hesitated for a moment before asking, "Then… those things earlier… will they come here?"
Lin Yu glanced toward the entrance briefly, then shook his head. "Not immediately," he said. "But eventually… yes."
There was no false comfort in his words. Only truth.
Su Yan lowered her gaze slightly, absorbing that reality, but she did not panic this time. Instead, she nodded quietly, as if accepting it.
Lin Yu watched her for a brief moment before turning away again. He stepped closer to the center of the building and sat down, crossing his legs slightly as the water around him continued to move in slow, controlled patterns.
He needed to understand his power better.
The second evolution had given him something new—something beyond simple control. He could feel layers within his ability now, deeper aspects that he had only touched briefly during the fight. The domain-like expansion, the internal manipulation, the precision cutting—these were only the beginning.
But along with that power—
There was still that presence.
He closed his eyes.
Inside his mind, the endless water appeared again, vast and shifting, but calmer than before. Yet deep beneath its surface, something remained, like a shadow hidden in the depths, silent but undeniable.
Lin Yu's expression remained unchanged.
"I don't know what you are…" he thought quietly.
"But you're part of me now."
The water around him stilled slightly, as if responding to his resolve.
Outside, the rain continued to fall, washing over the ruined city.
And far away—
On the rooftop of a collapsed high-rise building—
A figure stood silently in the rain.
Tall.
Unmoving.
Its eyes glowed faintly as it looked toward the direction where Lin Yu had disappeared.
It had felt the disturbance.
The evolution.
The anomaly.
For a long moment, it remained still.
Then—
It turned.
And vanished into the darkness.
The hunt—
Had begun.
