Chapter 4 - 3

Dream Thief – Part 3

The air felt heavy.

Like the weight of everything Arin had ever avoided was pressing down on him at once.

In front of him stood… himself.

But not the version he showed the world.

This one was colder.

Hollow.

Unforgiving.

"You ran long enough," the other Arin said.

"No more distractions. No more illusions."

Mira grabbed his arm. "Arin… this isn't a normal fight. This is psychological. If you lose here—"

"I know."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The ground beneath them dissolved into darkness.

Only the two of them remained, standing on a thin surface of fractured light.

"Tell me," the other Arin said, stepping closer, "what are you fighting for?"

Arin didn't answer immediately.

Because for the first time—

He didn't have a clear answer.

Freedom?

Redemption?

Escape?

Or just… survival?

The other Arin smirked.

"See? You don't even know."

Suddenly—

The world shifted.

Memories exploded around him.

A small room.

Laughter.

Warmth.

Then—

Fire.

Chaos.

Screams.

Arin staggered back.

"No…"

She appeared again.

Not the illusion from before.

Not the calm version.

This time—

Broken.

Fading.

"You left me," she whispered.

"I didn't—"

"You survived."

The words hit harder than anything.

"You moved on."

"You forgot."

"I didn't forget!" Arin shouted.

But his voice cracked.

Because deep down—

He knew.

He had buried it.

Hidden it.

Turned it into something easier to live with.

"I couldn't save you…" he said, his voice trembling.

Silence.

The world stopped moving.

For the first time—

The other Arin didn't speak.

The girl stepped closer.

Gentle now.

"I know."

Arin froze.

"You tried," she said softly.

"And that's enough."

His eyes widened.

"…What?"

"You're the one who couldn't accept it," she continued.

"You kept me here."

The realization hit like a shockwave.

This wasn't her.

Not really.

This was him.

Holding on.

Refusing to let go.

The other Arin stepped forward again.

"Pain doesn't disappear just because you ignore it."

Arin closed his eyes.

His breathing slowed.

For the first time—

He didn't run.

"I was afraid," he admitted.

"I thought… if I let go, I'd lose you completely."

Silence.

Then—

A small smile.

"You won't," she said.

Light began to spread across the darkness.

"You just have to live."

Arin opened his eyes.

And something inside him—

Shifted.

The weight.

The fear.

The guilt.

It didn't disappear.

But it no longer controlled him.

The other Arin watched quietly.

Then—

Slowly—

It began to fade.

"…So this is your answer," it said.

Arin nodded.

"I don't need to escape anymore."

The figure smiled faintly.

Then vanished.

The world cracked one final time.

"Arin!" Mira shouted. "This is it! The exit is opening!"

Light tore through the sky.

Everything began collapsing—

Faster.

Faster.

Arin looked one last time.

She stood in the distance.

Not sad.

Not broken.

At peace.

"…Thank you," he whispered.

And then—

He jumped.

Reality

Arin gasped.

His body jerked upright.

The machine's hum returned.

The room stabilized.

Mira was right beside him.

"You're back."

He looked around.

Everything felt…

Normal.

Too normal?

His eyes shifted to the table.

The coin.

Still there.

Slowly—

He reached out.

And spun it.

It rotated smoothly.

Steadily.

Then—

After a few seconds—

It wobbled.

And fell.

Silence.

Mira let out a breath. "We're really back."

Arin stared at the coin.

For the first time in a long time—

He felt grounded.

Not because reality was certain.

But because—

He was.

He stood up slowly.

"What will you do now?" Mira asked.

Arin looked toward the window.

The real world stretched beyond it.

Imperfect.

Unpredictable.

Real.

"…Live," he said.

And this time—

He meant it.
