Chapter 6 - Chapter 30: The Truth That Stayed

The moment Zein Shoin admitted she didn't want to leave, the atmosphere between her and Ace Craige didn't just shift—it settled into something heavier, something more permanent, like a truth that had finally found its place and refused to move again, and as Zein stood there trying to regain the control she had always depended on, she realized that this wasn't something.

She could take back or redefine, because it wasn't just about staying anymore, it was about why she was staying, and that was the part she still couldn't fully face, the part that made her hesitate before speaking, the part that made her aware of every word, every silence, every look that lasted just a little too long.

While Ace, standing in front of her with that same steady presence, looked like he had already accepted what she was still trying to understand, and that difference between them made everything feel even more intense, even more real, even more impossible to ignore.

"You're thinking again," he said.

"I always think," she said.

"Not like this," he said.

"You don't know that," she said.

"I do," he said.

Zein exhaled slowly.

"…stop saying that," she said.

"Stop proving it," he replied.

Zein looked at him.

"…you think you understand everything," she said.

"No," he said, "just you."

Zein's expression shifted slightly.

"That's not possible," she said.

"It is," he replied.

"…that's arrogant," she said.

"That's accurate," he said.

Zein shook her head faintly.

"…this isn't simple," she said.

"I never said it was," he replied.

"Then stop acting like it is," she said.

"I'm not simplifying it," he said, "I'm accepting it."

Zein's breath slowed.

"…accepting what?" she asked.

Ace stepped slightly closer.

"That you're not leaving," he said.

Zein held his gaze.

"I already said that," she replied.

"Say it again," he said.

Zein frowned.

"Why?" she asked.

"Because you hesitate every time," he said.

"…I don't hesitate," she said.

"You do," he said.

Zein looked away.

"…fine," she said quietly, "I'm not leaving."

Ace watched her carefully.

"Say it like you believe it," he said.

Zein's voice softened.

"…I'm not leaving," she repeated.

Ace exhaled slowly.

"That's better," he said.

"…this isn't a victory," she said.

"I know," he replied.

"Then stop acting like it is," she said.

"I'm not," he said, "I'm just not ignoring it."

Zein crossed her arms slightly.

"…you're making this bigger than it is," she said.

"No," he said, "you're trying to make it smaller."

Zein didn't respond immediately.

"…maybe I don't want it to be big," she admitted.

Ace's voice lowered.

"That doesn't change what it is," he said.

Zein's breath caught slightly.

"…you don't know what it is," she said.

"I do," he said.

"…then say it," she challenged.

Ace didn't hesitate.

"It matters," he said.

Zein went still.

"…that's too vague," she said.

"Then say it better," he replied.

Zein looked at him, her thoughts conflicting again.

"…it matters more than it should," she admitted.

Ace didn't look away.

"I know," he said.

Zein frowned.

"Stop saying that," she said.

"Stop proving it," he replied.

Zein let out a quiet breath.

"…this isn't fair," she said.

"Neither is denying it," he said.

Zein's voice dropped.

"…I'm not denying it," she said.

"Then stop resisting it," he replied.

Zein hesitated again.

"…I don't know how," she admitted.

Ace stepped just a little closer.

"You don't have to," he said.

"…then what do I do?" she asked.

Ace held her gaze steadily.

"You stay," he said.

Zein's breath slowed again.

"…I already am," she said.

Ace's voice softened slightly.

"Then stay honestly," he said.

Zein didn't answer.

Because this time—

She understood what he meant.

"…this isn't temporary," he said.

"I know," she replied.

"…you're sure?" he asked.

Zein looked at him without looking away.

"Yes," she said.

Ace nodded slightly.

"…good," he said.

Zein's voice softened again.

"…you're not leaving either," she said.

"No," he replied.

"…why?" she asked.

Ace didn't hesitate.

"Because you're not," he said.

Zein's heart slowed.

"…that's not a real reason," she said.

"It is to me," he replied.

Zein didn't argue this time.

Because now—

She didn't want to.

And that—

Was the truth she couldn't undo anymore.
